The prophet Isaiah 9:6: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." Luke 1:37: "For with God nothing shall be impossible." John 1:1-4,12-14: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. … But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." John 11:25-26: "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" Read the Bible, start with John and Romans

Hallelujah, praise God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I went to church as a child and it all felt good and everything to go but I couldn't understand it all until I returned when I was older. Its a life long education though doubt and negativities can try to sneak in your head. I believe in the greater good. To serve God by loving and helping others and making right choices. That's the key. To make right and good choices in life and never be self serving.

Cult Watch- I understand that you are making a joke, and I don't have a problem with that, but actually Vivaldi was a Catholic priest so I don;t think he had a wife.He was called "The red priest" because he liked to wear red vestments and while saying mass he would get a musical idea, walk out, write it down, come back and finish mass. Quite a character as musical geniuses often are.

In fact, the need to be Christian is integral to fully understanding the piece of music. Without it, you can indeed savour the beauty of the sounds, but you will not quite understand the meaning of the words, nor the reasoning for why the tune is both joyful and triumphant.

Sorry, I can't agree.Wd. you say the same of Bach's cantatas & Haydn's masses, that it takes a believing Christian to appreciate them fully? You can say that belief in the truth of Isaiah's prophecy adds an extra dimension to your appreciation of the music, but please don't belittle the joy & the thrill that the music gives even non-believers, an affirmation, as I said earlier, not merely of Isaiah's prophecy, but of life itself, & I shd. like to add, of the heights to which humanity can attain.

Again, yes, Bach's Cantatas and Haydn's masses do require a christian faith to add meaning to them. This is indeed how the composers would have liked us to appreciate their music, with our faith. It adds flavour to the voices and emphasises the emotion of the event at hand, such as the mass. Bach and Haydn were both practicing Christians, Bach even wrote at the end of each of his cantata pages, "Soli Deo Gloria", Glory to God alone. This shows that the only purpose he wrote his Cantatas was for the praise and glory of his God. But yes, I do accept your reasoning, and everyone is free to listen and appreciate the music in their own way.

Guy, I'd be the last to denigrate your experience, musical or religious, as you hear this sublime music; & John, I know very well that Handel & Bach & Haydn were devout Christians who (in effect) dedicated much of their oeuvre to their faith. I can well assume, as I wrote earlier, that believing Christians enjoy 'an extra dimension' in their appreciation of Christian music. I've no doubt that a devout Christian feels a response, when they hear a 'Sanctus' or an 'Et resurrexit' by Haydn, or when they sing, as I have, 'Ein Feste Burg ist Unser Gott', that a non-believer doesn't. But that's surely a religious, not a musical response. And I can't see that it follows that those who don't share the Xtian faith cherished by Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven & so many other composers of Xtian music, can't fully appreciate their music, or derive from it an experience that is...if I say spiritual I may be misunderstood, then how about ...transcendental? I only request you to allow as much value to the musical experience of non-believers, as they listen to the sublime Xtian-inspired music of the great composers, as a tolerant non-believer may give to yours. To me, 'For unto us a child is born' goes far beyond the prophecy of Isaiah. As I said earlier it celebrates life itself, &--- I'd like to add now--- the heights to which humanity may aspire. But I don't suppose I can convince you, any more than you can convince me.

I recorded (on VHS) this whole performance of the Messiah at least 4 times year after year in the 1990's when it was first released and shown annually on American TV back then. I still watch it several times a year, and this piece is my favorite.

@@moerktus : I think that sometime in our existence we will find that there is much more to be found from out there. Do you know Bette Midler singing " From a distance"? That hits me.
