@TRUTH707 Yeah...L1ONFIRE is right. This is more of a "concept" video so the...um..."chatter" is kind of necessary. You're more than welcome to comment on the concept of this self defense principle and your professional opinion on any of the videos is always appreciated, even should they disagree. Thanks! ~ Jeff

@mrcmacc - what? You can't think about when to strike when someone's pointing a gun at you? Let me answer this a different way... You'd damn well BETTER think about when to strike when some guy's pointing a gun at you! Timing is CRITICAL in executing a handgun disarm technique if you don't want to get shot. That's the whole point of this self defense video. Watch it again (and again - and again). I appreciate you commenting mrcmacc, but next time, please explain your opinion further, ok?

The psychological tips are good. *HOWEVER*, this is all assuming the gunman won't order you from a distance, assuming that they will give direction with their gun movement, and assuming they don't have a partner/gang member, etc. There are a lot of unaccounted variants in this situation, and unless you are fully trained to handle this combat scenario then JUST GIVE THE GUNMAN YOUR DAMN WALLET. Trying this with no proper training will just get you killed.

@TheMacSan - you'll definitely find many schools of thought on handgun disarmament out there. While this self defense video isn't about the mechanics of how to disarm a gun, speed, leverage, and field of fire are paramount in whatever technique you decide to train with. I also advocate concealed carry (though my state feels otherwise). Why should gangbangers be the only ones with a gun? ;-) Thanks for commenting MacSan! ~ Jeff

As long as he has the gun. He is in charge. Never underestimate your opponent. Never insult, demean, or talk above your opponent. Try not to show you are making too much eye contact with your hostage taker. Let the attacker vent without interupting. The more he vents, the more his aggression will be released. Empathise, do not sympathise. Do not make deals or promises with the hostage taker that you may not be able to deliver.

The only problem I see with this advice is that, perhaps the gunman does not have the same trigger discipline as the fellow you are working with in this video. If you attempt to disarm him with his finger on the trigger, he may (even accidentally) fire of a round; which, in turn, can hurt you or any bystanders. Other than that, great advice. Definitely subscribing.
@playsomevidya

That's a common misconception. If you have a firm enough grip on the cylinder, the gun physically cannot fire, since it has to rotate to fire the next bullet. Another alternative with a revolver is to obstruct the hammer from lifting back up with the trigger pull, as this too will prevent the gun from firing.

Good advice but psychology is more dominant in creating good timing than just techniques in my opinion. Asking questions while emulating a fearful tone opens up a pretty good window; not only distracting them while they form an answer but "massaging their ego" by showing fear puts them at ease in the sense that they feel that they have control over the situation and let their guard down. Maintain zen like patience and watch for eyes drifting out of contact while answered or relaxing muscles

Problem is, he has a revolver and grabbing the gun by the cylinder is a surefire way to blow a chunk of your hand off, or a finger or two, off. In this case, you'd want to go more for his hand/wrist, which is going to be a little trickier.
@reudas
@reudas 9 жыл бұрын
You can keep a revolver from discharging by seizing the cylinder and holding firmly. If the hammer has been drawn back, this will not work and you risk injury to your hand. If that's the case, it would be best to grab the weapon near the hand, and firmly apply pressure to the hammer, so that it cannot drop. I think this way would be easier to disarm than trying to go for the hand or wrist, because it still gives you good control of the weapon.
@XtremeConditions
@XtremeConditions 9 жыл бұрын
Andrew, let's be honest with ourselves. In this situation, under extreme stress, you're not going to be accurate enough to specifically grab the cylinder and/or hammer perfectly, to ensure it won't go off. It's just not gonna' happen, I promise you.

@XtremeConditions

Slim Shady I mean, honestly anything that could reasonable help should maybe be practiced. Like, don't devote your life to training for being victimized, but you need to do whatever is necessary to survive. I'm definitely not an expert at any of this. trying to grab a gun out of someone's hand without training is a shit proposition, but they may shoot you, they may not... Do you take your chances and hope they're satisfied with robbing you? Maybe. Do you try to make a move? Maybe... It's a tough decision, and you'll have to make it if it ever happens. Your method could get you shot in the head, as could any other method for these situation... To be honest, I would say to practice this in real life with an airsoft gun or something. As an example with the disarm, have a friend point an unloaded airsoft at you, and tell them to expect you to try and take it, and to be mentally prepared. And if they can do it fast enough, try to pull the trigger when you reach. I still think going for that gun is your best bet, if they're in range, but again, it's all a gamble, and you're in a shit situation on way or another. :(

You'll fight the way you've trained. If you've trained to disable a revolver this way you'll do it without much hesitation or reflecting if the opportunity presents itself. That's the reason for training and practice. If he's/she's close enough and you really think you're going to be shot go for it, what have you really got to lose? If you've trained and practiced as many dissarms as you can you just might make it

I remember seeing somewhere of a similar technique. So you're getting mugged and the guy asks you for your wallet. You pull it out and toss it at him. You don't hand it over. You toss it. Preferably as shodilly as possible. So his reaction will be to catch it. That's when you go for it.

And this is why you do not stick your gun out at a person at close range but keep it at your hip or close to chest to clear obstacles so there is two or three times the distance to reach for the weapon and Don't plant your feet you want to float and shift to avoid a lunge or strike.

that criminal is using a revolver with the hammer in the un - cocked position, therefore in order to fire it, a double action trigger pull would be in need of utilization. A trigger pull which in fact, takes a significantly larger amount of strength and effort to effectivly fire within that split second of time that the assailant has to react to your dissarm.

This is definitely something everybody should know how to do. Remember ONLY fight back if you HAVE TO. Im NO expert, but i have experienced it. Consider that the the gun will NOT be that close to you, and that the gun WILL move. So its HARDER and you need more time. Try to keep calm, and don´t let the right moment pass. I couldn´t get to the barrel in time, I got to his forearm. Got shot at the arm, and while fighting with him got shot 2 inches away from my spleen. YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE

@leapingcat - Even though your input is unprofessional, I'm willing to school you a little bit here... Pulling a trigger takes conscious thought and action (aside from an accidental pull from flinching or poor handgun disarm). It's not about "reading his mind" - it's about how the brain functions. It's incapable of consciously enacting split second timing on thought/speech and trigger pull in the split second that you perform your handgun disarm. Think about it and you'll realize it's true

@GlennFalconiVEVO - No offense taken. Just looking for valuable conversation around these handgun disarm techniques. That being said...when it comes to street fighting, nothing is 100%. But when it comes to handgun disarms, timing is crticial. Your options are to not attempt a disarm and hope for the best, or go for the disarm if you must. If you must disarm, "trigger happy" shots can happen by mistake and his flinch. But if you time right (like this video), your chances are much better.
@TENNESSEETRACKHAWK

the much better and far more simple approach is to simply look behind you as tho someone is there and say "Were fine thanx". at that point he now thinks someone is behind him. if u time it right u will disarm him every time cause the mind cannot do two things at once. Action will ALWAYS beat reaction. and depending on where the gun is in relation to ur head will dictate which disarming procedure u will implore.

furthermore if you can"t anticipate and read your opponent intentions then you have lost this round but not your life. If you can anticipate.... move toward the assaillant with your hands crossed, wrist over wrist or forearm in front of you pointing down before his weight come on the front leg and lock the armed hand in between your crossed over hand while redirecting his push to the opposite side of the armed arm and the uplitf movement of disarming him will follow almost instinctly

To re-emphasize your point, Sgt Dennis Tueller of the Salt Lake City Police determined that an attacker could travel 21 feet in 1.5 seconds. He wrote an article citing it in the March 1983 edition of SWAT magazine. Massad Ayoob has cited it numerous times and duplicated the results in his training.

@Southpark124 - As soon as you have some sort of cover (like a car next to you), then insert a psychological "break state" by asking him something that makes no sense whatsoever (like "how many udders does a cow have?") I know it sounds stupid...but his brain says "WTF?". Then run like hell, using cover to get as much distance as possible. Even a relaxed shooter aiming at a target can't hit very well from up close. An adrenalized felon is an even worse shooter.

@BlindPacemaker, that's simplistic armchair-quarterback analysis. There are any number of situations where the gun-wielder is nervous and doesn't necessarily have a plan. This video is just a general concept of what to do if a certain situation arises. Obviously if the gunman is too far away to grab, etc., this wouldn't be useful. One of the best bets is to simply run away if you get a window of opportunity. Same with a knife fight scenario, which tends to be lose-lose.

I get that. I'm not saying people should try it every time, and certainly not in a simple give-me-your-wallet situation. No technique is legitimate unless it's put to use under the right circumstance. Unfortunately, the option to not get shot is not always given. Many gangs are keen on the theatrical and favor an execution style of killing. It's stupid of them, I know, but it leaves opportunities open for disarms. Also, there are times when it's worth it to risk one's life to protect something.

@ivegotamnesia - I'm thinking you really do have amnesia. You're asking "who grabs the gun with 2 hands" but are claiming krav maga is better? I train in Krav Maga and we use two hands for disarms. The point is that you must know how to use 1 and 2 hands for your disarms. 2 hands gives you leverage to disarm the gun and have control to clear and lock on target. But there are also methods for 1 hand "push and strike" moves. Finally, as you twist the gun, you ARE out of the line of fire.

@GlennFalconiVEVO I think there are two critical factors in place here... first, if the gunman is a professional, you're already dead. But in most cases, common street thugs and drug addicts are not trained killers, giving a well prepared person an distinct advantage. The first and best thing to do when confronted with an armed assailant is immediately give them anything they want. But when no other viable option is present, I'd rather have some form of disarming knowledge than none at all.

Again, agree to disagree. I recognize the potential need to disarm an assailant who has a handgun, you don't. But the whole point of my original post is that I'm tired of arguing about it. It'd be one thing if it were a healthy discussion, but most of what I get in these forums is strong language and amateur opinions. Exactly! It migh give you a deep bruise or quite a cut, but at least that revolver will SURELY not fire the first round. You should always aim for the second half of the gun to hold when disarming, doesn't matter the gun. That way you can't go wrong in either scenario, trying to hold the backside of the gun while holding part of the attackers thumb and hand at the same time maximizes your chances of succeeding.

I've never held a pistol with 1 hand. I've always held it with 2 hands. and although I've never pointed my gun at another person, if I was going to do that, I would stand at least 9 feet away.

The thing is I don't point the gun unless I'm going to shoot. If you see my gun pointed at you its to late to stop me.

Additionally, I am only the aggressor if the threat/attacker flees and I pursue. At that point I become the aggressor. Otherwise, use of force (including shooting them) to stop the threat (whether they have a weapon or not) is legal and justifiable. But, on that same note, DO NOT TALK TO THE COPS!!!!!! The only thing you should say to the police after defending yourself is "I feared for my life. I had to defend myself. I wish to speak with an attorney." Even if you're the victim, demand a lawyer

By that logic, it sounds like you're saying that a person should wait until they are actually harmed before attempting to remove a threat (Which is sadly a legitimate claim if you're going by the American legal system). But if someone is pointing a gun at me and I have even the slightest fear that they mean to shoot me, I will take whatever action is necessary to end that threat to my life. Courtroom banter be darned. I understand where you're coming from, but I'd rather be in jail than dead.
