Me too, very similar story. Pick it up again to give your self awareness a gift. Some of your thoughts, energies, and childhood hope will float back to you with the motion of your hands. No need to wait until you are seventy, like me.

Cynthia I. Maddox I know...I am younger sewing lover that gained heavy back pain (with a spine condition which hopefully will disappear with future surgery), while I complained it is even painful to pedal my sewing machine, my pain doctor utter “why you need to pedal there are electronic machines with power button!” and I switched to lower machine. Not fun. Then I purchased expensive embroidery machine✨ (for compensation☺️?) and found new pleasure making unnecessary name tags to every kids around me💓. I love to start crochet also. I still hand-sew and enjoy some auto-coutoure techiniques my teacher taught me.. I also think one way, is to hire a helper (seamstress or servant or grandchildren, students from neighborhood; whoever) that could prepare/take over any time you are tired....or your pain medication’s time out....that’s my 90 year old teacher used to do.

I use sewing thread to do my decorative stitches since I can find remainders from the clothing sewing industry here n los anglrs st the swap meets much cheaper than the cost and availability of gloss. It is not quite the same as gloss but sometimes it just does matter All I do is get a cone of thread and measure it out to what I think I will need and just measure out how many threads is needed for the effect. I do the same thing for cording. I can customize the color and hue by mixing various colors or shade to get the right effect. To make the corfording o have one of those old fashion eraser guns thst I just tighten the end on to it and let it spinning until I get a good twist. Then let out enough of the twist so thst it will not twist onto itself.

Beautiful craftsmanship! Great hobby on planes and waiting rooms. Makes good use of time. The Victorians used to be so productive. They would constantly multitask, taking up their sewing or embroidery or weaving when sitting in their drawing rooms with family during the evenings. We have lost that touch, with TV blaring mindlessly all day. No more conversations, tea, and needlework. I should start again.
