One of the most underrated anime to ever come out. The depth of the story and character development is unnmatched IMHO. This truly is in my top 3 anime of all time! Watching it with you is my second time watching it and it still gave me chills. The feels in this anime are so on point and the music composed by the great Hiroyuki Sawano is absolute class. Thanks Gaz for taking me on this journey again! I will surely be watching this at some point again. Its just that good!!!

Thank you for taking us on your 86 journey. This is the first anime where I sought the light novels because I wanted to know what happened after this very satisfying story arc. Fun Fact: This is the same animation studio that made Solo Leveling. Hiroyuki Sawano being the composer for both anime’s ? Surely, this cannot be a coincidence.

Lena finally let them go, fully believing they died...and then there they are, standing right in front of her. I wanted her to hug him so badly right when she realized who it was, too!

2:20 Shin is known for making very bland food since he just doesn't care, Anju was freaking out since it actually tasted normal. 13:25 common moment of Kurena delusions..lmao 14:42 IMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (why am i crying for the 25th time?) 14:52 holding back tears...as Frederica said, such a boy. 15:28 the hand shadow makes an 86

Such an emotional rollercoaster. Remember all those losses, all this pain during this season ? Having such a beautiful ending at the end of that terrible journey, so incredible ! Btw : - you should watch the 2 videos of ctrlaltQQ explaining all the details and symbolism you probably missed during the season, it shows the love of the studio for this anime ! For example, the 1st opening which evolves with all the losses after each episode. Or the fact that she finally catched up with them at the end of « the road » and you can see they’re all together in the final scene at the end of the railway (whereas at the end of episode 11, when she thought they were all dead, she was on the railway swearing that she will catch up with them. It shows how well done it is ! - the final OST with the encounter is called « Lilas » which means « Lena is looking at Shin ».

Highly recommend watching this YT commentary. There is also a Part 3 (Episode 23 Analysis); which is, in reality an analysis of episode 22.

Man, I still remember picking this one up on a whim and enjoying each episode more and more until the end. The break was grueling, having to wait for the end. That last episode will always be one of my favorite episodes of anime ever. The music in this show is just god tier. Avid is my favorite anime ending of all time. This show, to me, is a 10/10 and easily sits in my favorites. Glad you checked it out, what a journey.

Going to be a lot of thoughts in this one as it's kind of my last chance to say things about this series for awhile. I'm not sure whether you caught it throughout this season or not, but Shin is notoriously bad at cooking - not because he isn't capable, but because he doesn't care enough to learn or try (i.e., the egg shells in the French toast batter that Frederica called him out on). So when Anju, the dedicated cook of the group, tried it, she was shocked that it was actually good. The really cool thing about the photograph Shin left is the little detail including Frederica's finger in the photo. If you go back to the episode it was taken, Frederica was indeed a bit careless and had her fingers in front of the lens, and they went as far as too include her fingers accidentally being captured here. Really interesting seeing the drunks from the lobby that were always harassing Lena about her treatment of the 86 as she passed by them whining about "equality" from "impure races" who are charitably giving them food after the fall of the Republic. Some people in this series never learn. Also really interesting that Lena now outranks that superior officer that was harassing her at the beginning of this half of the season. Lena in this one season went from Major down to Lieutenant and back up to Colonel. This guy calls himself Lena's "superior officer", and was so while Lena was a Lieutenant, but his rank is a Lieutenant Colonel, so at this point in the story Lena outranks him. Also of note that officer has pictures of children of many ethnicities, trying to make it appear he wasn't one of the discriminators. Other people in this series learn, but clearly the wrong things. It's also only been 2 years since the 86 finale, there's still plenty of time for a S2 to be made, especially with plenty of source material available.

When those 2 mad scientists get together I almost feel sorry for the legion. The prankster circle grew to include everybody in the military ministry welcoming in Lena... They even redacted her commander's briefing files and unit rosters. 86 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡 🎉🎉😱🎉🎉

The train tracks are something that persist throughout the entirety of this part. It symbolizes following after someone, searching for something, branching paths and so on. Only when Lena finally catches up to them do the train tracks end, symbolizing a new and unknown future.

There is plenty of Light Novel source material and the show made profit I think another season is inevitable, A-1 pictures just often takes their time and the 86 team is currently working on Nier Automatia

Rarely do we get such a pay off and satisfying ending to a show, this is still up there for me as one of the best animes I've ever seen, the level of details is top notch and could only be made by people who really love the source material, I'm still hoping we get a season 2 at some point because this is too good of a story not to continue

The ending was great but there should have been a hug to make it more emotional. I did go on to read all the books. It is a good story but the author does drag things out like so many do. I hope she will end the story soon so it does not get ruined.
