The licking thing can be especially hard for dog owners because context is SO important here. Many dogs learn to lick humans faces because some humans do enjoy that, but in a situation where you’re trying to trim nails or brush and the dog is licking it’s stress. They’re trying to soothe themselves because they don’t like what’s happening.

Yes! Context is really important. You can also watch to see if the dog initiated the interaction, or the human did. That can tell you a lot about what might be going on as well.

Thank you for another great video. We learned that the eye position could be due to stress. Also, if our dog's ears are back, they might be stressed. We learned about the licking from our vet when we were worried our puppy had an allergic reaction to something outside or from chlorine in the pool. Fortunately it turned out our puppy was nervous about a monsoon storm heading our way.

Another thing my dog does since she was eight weeks old on walks She lays down immediately when she sees a child or an older person or a dog everyone in my neighbourhood thinks that it's so cute but it must mean something 🤷🏼‍♀️ I always just chopped it up she just wants to go see them so she's trying to be polite and laying down so she can maybe get what she wants cuz as a young puppy when everyone wanted to see her and pet her I would have her lay down first before getting pets cuz I didn't want her jumping especially on younger kids

It's hard to know without more context but a lot of dogs do this (or sit) as a way of saying "whoa that's something very exciting, I need to sit for just a minute to take it all in". Or it could definitely be a learned behavior of "see person / lay down / get reinforcement" which is actually a great sequence to teach because it prevents jumping.

@@HowToTrainADreamDog actually did get way better on not jumping without being asked on to the couch first or just jumping in general so me giving her a peanut butter treat on her lick mat or pumpkin was a good reinforcement is that what you're saying 🤔 cuz I think I just made her keep asking for more more attention more snacks or whatever it is she's asking for 😅😅 but when the day is done and it's time to relax that was what I was trying to reinforce by rewarding her for a good day now I feel like I just rewarded her knowing she's going to come and give me her Paw right after she's done 😔 definitely confusing and tricky business dealing with a dog especially a husky I've never had a dog challenge me in the way she has 😬 once I teach her things she also learned Way MORE about me in the process 😂😂

My dog does giving me Paw every time in the evening when I'm finally ready to sit down with my fiance after work and watch a movie it's always around the same time between 7-8 p.m. it used to be 5-6pm every night all last winter but then summer came she's 1 1/2 year old a little more patient and trained better now, but she still does it!Its just a couple hours later(think it has to do with it getting darker later😂) she still always does it. I know it has nothing to do with getting on the couch with us cuz she's always allowed. it might be because she just doesn't want me and him sitting beside each other😅 but honestly all jokes aside I've never been able to figure out what exactly it is she's asking/telling me. And it's only me she does this to🤷🏼‍♀️ I've given her a snack/lick mat every night since we got her. When it's gone this is what she continuously does. I don't mind that she doesn't cuz I'm so used to it after a year-and-a-half but I feel like she's asking me for something

Dogs can be so puzzling! If you give her attention when she gives you the paw, she may just be asking for your attention. This could also become part of her cool down routine: Lick mat / paw / attention / bed. If you respond to it, the habit will grow. It's OK to respond to it if you don't mind it.

How can we successfully move the pup down a reaction ladder step? My 6 yo Chihuahua Mini Pincher goes from 0 to 100 in an instant, when he sees stranger dogs and people. Even with friends, he barks, jumps, and sometimes nips.

The signals in puppies can be a little more subtle, and puppies are also a little more compliant. But as they grow they can definitely form some strong opinions. You are right that it's even more important for an adult human to be the puppy's advocate when young children are in the home. My dog yawns a lot when we’re on car rides. He also gets very vocal. He also yawns and whines after I put his harness or collar on. Does that mean I shouldn’t take him on walks or car rides? He’s a 10 month old min pin. Thanks for making and sharing these videos!!

It's good that you're noticing this. It sounds like he could use some more help to love those activities. Thank you for this! I feel like I've seen my puppy give me the whale eye, but it's usually when he's lying on his back playing with a toy, he sort of looks at me with the toy in his mouth. Is this him asking me to get out of his space? I always thought he was just looking over at me!

Thanks for watching! It will depend a lot on context. Try to look for subtle cues on what he wants. If you approach, notice any ear twitches or mouth tightening. That could indicate that he wants some space. Or look for him to move closer to you, which could indicate he wants you to engage! You can also get in the habit of trading his toy for a treat, so he never has a problem with you approaching when he has a high value item.
