4:38 "Nikon has begun delivering cameras with sensors that have no optical low-pass filter" Yes, including the D5300, the predecessor of the D5500. You need a very good lens to tell the difference though. 7:24 "Another wow feature is the built-in wi-fi" The D5300 had built-in wi-fi too, and you could get it on the D5200 by plugging in a cheap wi-fi accessory dongle. In both cases, you could control the camera remotely from a tablet or smartphone in exactly the same way as you've shown here, including the touch focus functionality, etc. 9:55 "I was surprised to learn that the D5500 has a built-in intervalometer." You shouldn't be. All of the D5X00 series cameras have had intervalometers too. The only features that appear to be new on the D5500 are the touch screen and the flat video profile. Both are very welcome additions in my opinion, but it's a bit misleading to focus on all those other features without pointing out that you can get them on the D5300, which was released only a year and a half ago.

I just bought nikon D5500 as my first DSLR camera. So far i am so satisfied with this camera of choice. But i had a little regret on my lens kit i choose. I bought the double zoom kit 18-55 mm vrII and 55-300mm vr. I have no any knowledge yet when it comes in camera lenses. I think it is much better to choose the camera lens used on this video . I should have choose this one . What do you think?

At 8:10 they mention how the screen stays on and is distracting when you look through the viewfinder but they have an auto sensor built in now. On my D5100 I have it set to "auto info display: off" in the setup menu; so after my image review times out the screen goes dark. The screen also remains off if I focus on a subject but then choose not to take a picture and release the button.

Low weight means a lot! After lugging around several pounds of gear for years - this is amazing. The functionality is awesome - beyond "entry level". The quality of photos is stunning. Save your $ from a much bigger full frame body and buy a good DX lens. Touch screen makes knobs and buttons seem ancient but the basic controls for shooting are there. There is no accelerometer like a phone so the image orientation locks, but that is easily changed. Great viewfinder too with a decent diopter and shooting display so you don't have to check the screen. Thrilling to use!

I bought the D5500 a month ago, its my first DSLR and I was very happy with it.... Buuut, on the 6th day of use, the 18-140 lens' zoom ring got stiff [by stiff I mean little harder then it previously was...I could use just my 2 fingers to rotate but not now] so I went to the dealer and told him about the lens, he said 'I don't feel any difference', long story short: After a week I pressurized him to send the lens to repair centre, he finally did. Got a call from the centre asking problem, he checks and says "it's okay", I told "my 70-300 is now feeling more smooth", he replied "you shouldn't compare this with 105 or other, its just how its mechanism works", I asked if he could do anything to smooth-en it up lil bit, he said "I'll see what I can do". A week passed by and I dont have the cam, let's just hope the guy did some magic. If I get the lens as it was I'd be really dissapointed *_*' BTW, it's 'knee-con' not 'naay-con' :]

+Chris Chiera The D7200 will have the more advanced autofocus system, has the better build, is a faster camera all around. It also has two memory card slots, along with an external microphone jack, and features that make it easier to shoot in manual mode. These would all be significant differences between the cameras. That being said, the D7200 would also have the better overall image quality (especially in terms of color depth and dynamic range). That isn't the D5500 isn't a great camera: it?s simply an introductory DSLR while the D7200 is a more advanced/higher end option. Though, both are capable of capturing great images in real life shooting situations. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

Hey great review, TY. I'm really stuck between the P900 & D5500. My main usage at present is photographing bird-life from a kayak and on foot. I can see the speed benefits of the P900 and the zoom is to die for. But I like the menu system, touch screen and better quality images of the D5500. I'm no professional but quality images are important. I'm leaning toward the P900, but I'll always want that DSLR too. A camera in between would be perfect, as well as some water/dust proofing.

I want to buy a DSLR now. I can afford D5500 right now but on seeing the D7200 features, I was fascinated. Should I save and buy D7200 or go with D5500. I am a landscape/architectural photographer. It will be my last APS-C camera before I move to full frame, that's why I am confused in choosing between this two. I want the best. Is Nikon D5500 worth the compromise of not having Nikon D7200? Please help me. Thank you in advance.

+minhajul islam mithun Hello, Compared to the now Discontinued Canon 7D, the D5500 will outperform it in almost ever facet. If comparing to the current 7D Mark II, the 7D Mark II is higher level of camera. Twice as fast, with a more advanced autofocus system and is ideal for video with used in combination with Canon STM lenses. *Andrea

If you are already familiar with DSLRs, I would suggest going with the Nikon D7100. Both the D7100 and D5500 are great cameras, though the D5500 is more geared towards someone starting out with a DSLR. The D7100 has the better build, and is weather sealed. It also has the better autofocus system along with some more advanced features. *Christina* AskKZbin@bhphoto.com

+Yash Sadawana The Canon 700D(T5i) is older than the D5500 and has been out for some time. You’ll find the Nikon D5500 able to outperform the T5i on many levels. Firstly the D5500 has no optical low-pass filter this combined with the added resolution will help provide sharper and more detailed images. Additionally, the D5500 will have a more expanded autofocus system offering 39 points of autofocus as compared to 9 on the T5i. The more expanded native ISO range of the D5500 will also provide better low light performance and has the added feature of Built-In WiFi which the T5i does not offer. *Andrea

*Excellent video Larry, very informative. B&H is always on point. Wonderful company to purchase from btw. As a customer I think B&H's service is the gold standard in the Audio/Video retail industry. The staff at B&H put Sam Ash & Guitar Center to shame*. In any event I'm not just commenting to complement, I need an answer to a question that is important to me... I'm really interested in this camera for video, the only thing holding me back from a purchase is the HDMI output... is it clean HDMI? I'm getting conflicting information. Many sites/people that have reviewed the Nikon D5500 have said it does have clean HDMI. However one review I watched on Vimeo (link included) said the HDMI output is not clean, that the LCD overlays are included in the signal output. Has anyone over at B&H tested it's HDMI output for use with an external recorder like an Atomos Ninja or Black Magic Video Assist??? *I would really appreciate any feed back here!*@.@~* I'm on a tight budget and this camera would be perfect for me if the HDMI output was usable with an external recorder. *Here is some examples of the conflicting info I'm talking about:* Tony says yes at about 3:09> kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpfCkqSbmrZroLs Nice Lady says no at about 3:09> kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5PUeXyfbpp5i6M And even Nikon itself seem to be giving conflicting information: cdn-4.nikon-cdn.com/en_INC/o/xFKjr_r3s2Xw1N_-UjTHd2PQf24/PDF/DSLR_Video_Features_Guide_en.pdf

I bought this cam the other day and I have never taken a photo in my life. I did a short study about aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. After playing around with a few shots I'm already getting professional looking Silver Jewelry shots however eliminating shadows on a white background will take a lot of practice and money for lighting probably? Shooting with black background eliminated the shadows however some friends say they like the shadows because the Jewelry looks real. The focused shot is amazing. can I get some feed back. What do you guys think? Shadows with an amazing shot or no shadows for Jewelry website. I really have no clue what would make the difference in someone purchasing an item and pulling the trigger. Im thinking no shadows however I see even in this video the Nikon D5500 photo had a shadow and it looked great. Please give your feed back guys. Best Camera I ever used hahaha beside my Samsung Galaxy note 4

How does the D5500 compare with the Canon T6s/760D. I've read, the D5500's Live view AF is sluggish, but your review suggests it does okay. Is it because the 18-140 Kit len was use. Many reviewers had used the 18-55 collapsible Kit lens, which is considered pretty average, & supposedly doesn't do justice with the Nikon's Sensor. Maybe the Nikon D5500's Auto focus (especially in the live view) looked more slow & noisy because of the 18-55 kit lens. what are your thoughts about this? Thank.. !! :-)
@BandH
@BandH 9 жыл бұрын
+anu l The Nikon D5500 will have the better overall image quality and low light performance compared to the Canon T6s. The T6s will have the better autofocus performance during video/live view. No kit lens will be overly amazing. I do find the Nikon kit lenses to be a bit better than the Canon kit lenses. However, I don't know that the kit lens will have much impact on the autofocus during video for Nikon. Nikon?s AF system, while excellent for stills, uses contrast detection for AF during video. This will never be as accurate or fast as phase detection AF. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

If you are looking for something that would have better optical quality, you might look at the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors. It would be a great option for a standard zoom to start out with. You could use this for portraits, landscapes, and sports shots that don’t require an overly telephoto lens. *Christina* AskKZbin@bhphoto.com bhpho.to/1kF9CMz

I'm a student that is into photography. I just have a point and shoot right now, and I want to get a DSLR. I want a DSLR for a good price though, and I am looking at the D5300 and the D5500. I don't know if the added features are worth it on the 5500, but l love the touchscreen on my point and shoot. Which should I get?
@BandH
@BandH 8 жыл бұрын
+Trey Grimsley The 2 cameras are the same in terms of their features and specifications, with the exception that the D5500 does not include a GPS function as the D5300 does, and as you pointed out the touch screen feature on the D5500 and not the other. Essentially you'd be paying the extra cost for the touchscreen on the D5500. The touchscreen is a nice addition, and if you'll be doing a lot of video recording it is useful to be able to tap on the screen to control the focus point. Otherwise if you wanted to save some money, the D5300 will take just as good images and a lower cost. - Yossi

How does the camera (especially the video) compare to the canon t5i, t6i or the sony a6000? I've heard some people say that the canon's video is simply better, but the D5500 has a flat colour profile and the canon has none, however I'm guessing they meant the canon's codec is better, so I'd rather ask pros about this and get a better answer. I admit however that I'm a bit biased towards the the sony a6000 but the lack of a microphone input and touch screen really kills it for me, and the sony a6300 is just above my budget :/
@1RungAtATime

+The Dead Immortal The auto focus for video on the d5500 kind of sucks because it constantly hunts to keep the object in focus. Plus, you can hear the focus motor while it's doing it, as you can hear in this video. The Canons seem to have a much better continuous focus system for videos. From the research I did before settling on it, the consensus is the Canons are better at videos and the Nikons are better at photos.
@BandH
@BandH 8 жыл бұрын
+The Dead Immortal - While I am a Nikon shooter myself, I would likely go with the T6i if video is your main use for the camera. The Nikon DSLRs use contrast detection AF for video, which won’t be nearly as fast or accurate as the phase detection AF during video in the Sony a6000 and Canon T6i. The a6000 is an amazing camera, but you will have more accessory options with the T6i. So, if you are on a budget, I think it would be easier to get a simple rig together around the T6i. *Christina* AskKZbin@bhphoto.com

B and H I don't really care about a fast focusing system for video, since manual focus is really the way to go for video, and I won't be shooting fast subjects, but what I do want is a good video codec/format that I'll be able to edit really well and color grade (since I wanna get into that), and the D5500's flat profile to me offers an advantage over the t6i. But do you know anything about magic lantern on the t5i unlocking better (and gradable) video?

Totally different cameras: one has full frame (better image quality) 7200 is a crop sensor (less quality than a full frame). If you have already lenses, make sure you don't need to buy new ones to get the full potencial of a full frame camera, otherwise it will increase ur upgrade costs.

+knightangel041085 Both the 55-200mm VR II and the 55-300mm lens are good quality optics. Both are telephoto zooms suitable for subjects that are further away. The 55-300mm lens would be a better choice if you are constantly going to be working at taking pics of subjects that are far away, such as wildlife or sporting events for instance. Between the two that would be my choice as the more versatile option to use with the camera. - Yossi

We’re sorry to hear that you’re having trouble. It's possible that there wasn't enough light to make the proper exposure, which will result in a black frame. If you haven't done so already, you may want to try the manual exposure setting on the camera.

+AbyssalTentacle No, not at all. The D5500 is a well designed and constructed camera, and it does not inspire a feeling of cheap quality when holding it. I find it to be on par with the feeling of holding a Canon and other well constructed models. - Yossi

I purchased my first DSLR (Nikon D5500), but am little bit worried that the aperture cannot be changed in live view while recording a video. Does this have impact in shooting everyday videos or it is something that DSLR videographs don't change often?
@BandH
@BandH 8 жыл бұрын
+Igor Lazikj For this type of camera system and their lenses, not being able to adjust the aperture whilst shooting is common due to the fact that the change in the aperture would be very noticeable and would not be visually pleasing to make the transition during the recording. If you need to make an adjustment to the aperture simply end the shot, reset the lens, and continue filming. Its only really when you get into your higher end cinema type cameras and lenses where the lenses have a seamless ability to make an aperture adjustment that is not identifiably noticeable during recording. Bottom line is you don't really need to worry about it having a negative impact on your recording. - Yossi

@BandH
@BandH 9 жыл бұрын
Majd Fayad You don't need any additional accessories in order to shoot RAW with the D5500. Though, you will need some sort of software that can recognize and/or convert the D5500 RAW files in order to open them up in your computer and work on them. If you are using adobe software, Camera Raw 8.8 is now available, which is compatible with the Nikon D5500 RAW files. Otherwise, you can use the Nikon View NX2 Software that is included with the D5500 to view/process/convert the RAW files. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

@BandH
@BandH 8 жыл бұрын
+pratik soni - The two cameras have virtually the same specifications and features. They both offer the same pixel count and ISO ranges as well as the same HD Video resolution and burst rates. The one advantage the Nikon has is a greater amount of focus points which will help with active subjects and tracking their movement. That and currently the Nikon is priced considerably lower than the Canon would be my reasons for choosing it over the Canon. - Yossi

Which one would you recommend between D7100 and D5500? BTW Nice review! Thumbs Up.
@BandH
@BandH 8 жыл бұрын
Which camera to go with would depend on what you are looking for in a camera. The D7100 has the better build, is faster, has the better AF system, and has two card slots instead of just one. The D5500 is the more user friendly option of the two. It’s also a newer camera, with newer sensor tech, and has the slightest edge in terms of low light performance and dynamic range. If you have any specific questions about the cameras, you might send us an email. *Christina* AskKZbin@bhphoto.com

I am new to dslr photography actually this would be my first dslr. What I want is a camera to capture my outdoor trips as well as some day to day snaps. Can d7100 being an old model create any issue? Or the newer sensors in D5500 would create any significant difference? Thanks in advance.
@BandH
@BandH 8 жыл бұрын
The D7100 would have a few advantages including a more expansive auto focus system making continuous focus faster and more accurate. The faster frame per second rate as well as the more robust body build would position this for more active use sports/events and would not have any kind of Nikon AF lens limitations. Though that may not necessarily all be needed. For more causal, family type usage the D5500 would be more than suitable. *Andrea

Would this be a good camera for a beginner that is into astrophotography? And staying under $800. Any help would be appreciated.
@BandH
@BandH 6 жыл бұрын
If you do not currently have any lenses or any brand preference, I would recommend the Nikon D5600 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens, B&H # NID56001855, for your usage needs. It would have the best low-light performance, widest dynamic range, and most color depth of all cameras in its price range. The lens included may not be the best for astrophotography, but you may either purchase a new lens, or if you own a telescope, you may purchase a T-mount adapter or other adapter to connect the DSLR to your telescope for your usage needs. The Nikon D5500 is the older version of this camera, so if you want a more economical option, the Nikon D5500 DSLR camera will still be a good option for your usage needs.

Wonder how this compares to the Sony A65
@BandH
@BandH 8 жыл бұрын
+T-75 Proto - Personally I would opt for the Nikon D5500 over the Sony A65. The D5500 features a better AF engine and many more AF points for more accurate focusing, it features a higher ISO which will allow it to perform better in low light. Plus it features Wi-Fi to transmit images and control certain features on the camera remotely. The touch-LCD screen also allows for more precise focusing when recording video. The one feature the A65 has over the D5500 is its burst rate for continuous still shooting. It can shoot at up to 10 frames per second, vs 5fps in the D5500. If you were going to be shooting sports for instance, the A65 would be the better choice. Overall I'd go with the D5500 personally. - Yossi

@BandH
@BandH 7 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are shooting, and how you like to shoot. The 18-140mm lens would be a great travel lens and would be suitable for most subject matter while providing the convenience of not having to change lenses or carry an extra lens. However, if you are specifically shooting wildlife, sports, or anything that will require a far reach, than the 18-55 +70-300mm would better suit your needs. *Andrea

+Nikola Nikoloski It would not be possible to use Sony E-mount lenses on a Nikon camera, no. Beyond having different mounts, the Nikon?s register is far larger than that of the Sony E-mount; so an E-mount lens would sit at a much greater distance from the sensor than it was optically designed for if mounted on a Nikon camera. *Christina* AskPhoto@bhphoto.com

+RufusDinaricus - For still photography the cameras are relatively close to each other in their performance specifications. The D5500 has a higher pixel count, and will handle details in highlight and shadow areas much better. The G7 however has a faster burst rate for continuous still shooting, so thats better for sports or animal shots or active children. In regards to video capture the G7 can capture at a higher resolution level called 4K which would make it the better choice for video work. - Yossi

Could someone explain what touch shutter is?
@BandH
@BandH 5 жыл бұрын
As the Nikon D5500 DSLR camera has a rear LCD Touch Screen similar to the LCD touch screen on current smartphones/tablets, the Touch Shutter is a feature on the camera that allows you to touch the subject you wish to focus on directly on the screen, and the camera can automatically focus and release the camera's shutter, all without using the camera's shutter button (Touch Shutter does not work when the camera is in Manual Focus Mode). As shown on the link below, you would first tap on the Touch icon on the rear LCD screen when the camera is in Shooting mode, then you touch the monitor to position the focus point so the camera may autofocus on the selected subject, and when you are ready to take the image, you simply release your finger from the LCD screen and Touch Shutter will automatically release the shutter and capture the image for you. bit.ly/2Egor91

B and H I've seen many samples between the 2 cameras. most amateurs (as the camera is geared for) and even many professionals....have not been able to tell a noticeable difference between images from the 2 cameras, except maybe at high ISO. better specs on paper doesn't mean better images. the user friendly Canon with easier controls, better focus, more great and cheaper lens options, even better app control is more likely to produce better images for a beginner. since it has always had much more to do with the control of the camera and the person than the technology.....especially with so many great camera options today.

@BandH

+BeñatLarru - Full-time AF (AF-F mode) is a feature that will memorize the subject, and as the subject moves it will continuously maintain focus/refocus as needed to keep the subject sharp. +Ahsan Haneefa The D5500 would be a great option, if you were looking for more something more cost effective you could also look at the D3300. The Nikon D3300 DSLR Camera is a compact and versatile camera featuring a DX-format 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor. The sensor and processor combine to realize high-resolution imaging, notable low-light sensitivity to an expandable ISO 25600, continuous shooting to 5 fps, and Full HD 1080p video recording capabilities. Additionally, the sensor design omits the traditional optical low-pass filter in order to gain the utmost sharpness and resolution from both photos and videos. These imaging assets are complemented by an 11-point autofocus system, which provides quick and accurate focusing capabilities to suit working with a variety of subject types in nearly any lighting situation. A range of shooting modes and features are also available to help creatively accentuating your imagery, including an Easy Panorama mode as well as Picture Control settings for in-camera adjustment of the color and contrast qualities of your photos and movies. bhpho.to/1L0Kpuh >Mark
