Even though i don't use the GPS that often on my D5300, i still didn't want to miss it on my school exchange in france, it really helped identifying the places where i had taken the photos. And it did work quite flawlessly.

Toby, This is a great review. Of all the cameras you mentioned, the Nikon d3000 series, Nikon d5000 series, and the Samsung NX lower end APS-C cameras allow Date stamps directly onto the jpeg files. Neither the Nikon d7000 series, nor the Canon dslrs, nor the Sony a6000, nor the Olympus APS-C cameras allow date stamps directly onto the jpeg. For many photographers this is not a big deal. For those wanting a camera to take photos of the kids and grandkids then the date on the image is more important. Of course all of the cameras allow the pictBridge printing stuff using dpof, blah, blah, blah....

I'm between the 5300 and the t5i, i'm new to it and i wan't to make videos for my agency. I think the 5300 have an edge because of the 1080p at 60fps, what would be great for slow motion (very important for me). Do you think i can do better with the T5i? Thank you.
@photorectoby7 жыл бұрын
If you plan to rely on Autofocus for video shots the T5i has a strong advantage but you can certainly get better slow mo out of the D5300.

It will be very helpful for me if you kindly suggest me to peak up the correct one (maybe from Nikkon or something else).

Uhm, I'm assuming you have the camera names inadvertently switched on the ISO test shots of the color chart? If not then I'm definitely seeing more grain and color artifacts on the D5500 in the higher ISOs, and owning a D5300, I certainly don't get that performance at 25,600 as we're seeing on the right side of the split.

about lacking exposure preview - this just means you have to take a shot and review it to see the exposure? I can't see it as a big deal. Prefer for live view to offer maximum visibility while composing the shot and not obscuring things when exposing to the left, for example.
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Yep - and even better is to look at the exposure meter and see where the indicator sits. I personally, if I am using live view, like the simulation. If I don't want that I will use the viewfinder.

What do you mean by the D7100 has full manual controls? Is there something you aren't able to control manually on the D5300?
@echt1147 жыл бұрын
Mostly he means is that the 7100 has 2 control dials instead of one. It only matters if you're planning to shoot full manual while adjusting the aperture with one finger and the shutter speed with the other. You can control everything manually on the D5500 too, you just use the same dial for both.

@TheFrontyer8 жыл бұрын
Alejandro Andrés Hernández Is there any specific reason for why?
8 жыл бұрын
Frontyer Yes! both canon and nikon are profesional level cameras and, although Nikon does have better image quality when it comes to stills, the truth is that both of them are way beyond what you really "need" to be a professional photographer in terms of image quality. But what about VIDEO? Well, that's a totally different thing. Canon is WAY AHEAD of nikon regarding its video capabilities, specially when it cones to the auto focus system which is probably the most important feature for recording professional video (60 FPS at 1080p is nice to have but is over kill in most situations, meanwhile the auto focus system will MAKE or BREAK your video in its entirety -And nikon just sucks at that-). Also canon makes proffesional dedicated cinema cameras. if you ever graduate to that, you wont be using nikon gear and your lenses will be worthless. The truth is that the D5300 is probably a better camera, and certainly the best one available at its pricepoint (at least for photography), but I honestly think that marrying into the nikon family is a mistake if you're interested in video rather than photography. Best regards,

Hey Toby, nice video! Thank you for all this information. I am planning to upgrade from my old T1i to try Nikon flavor for a while (so D5500, altough being an entry-level camera, represents a huge step up in terms of sensor size, screen features and conectivity). People say the transition is not easy but I really want to do so. My T1i allows me to select only fixed ISO values of 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200. So my question is: does the D5500 let me choose an in between ISO range, like say 500? By the way, my pick is: D5500 body + Sigma 18-50 f2.8. I've been using the Canon 18-55 kit lens since 2011, and about a year ago I bought a 50mm f1.8, which opened my mind to the lens market. Once switching lenses is complicated and space/time consuming for me as a hobbyist photographer, I thought the Sigma 18-50 will be a great option as my all-time ready lens to go by now.

How do i reduce the noise while focsing on the default 18-55mm lens I hear this continuous hum and its loud! What should I do.
@hubbiemid62099 жыл бұрын
You cant unfortunately. Only canon STM lenses can focus very silently and their autofocus system is pretty good. If you want to have excellent video go for the Panasonic gh4 and watch some videos on it. It can take good stills too. But if you want a canon, then go for the 70d or one of the new rebel cameras (t6i/6s). Then 70d is the best for video on canon, but the gh4 has 4k internal recording which is something else to consider. I personally want the Canon t6i because of the lens variety.

Hi Toby, Love your channel, very informative. I am upgrading from a Nikon D40+ Tamron 18-270 and looking at the new Nikon d5500+18-140 or the a6000+18-105. I would classify myself as an enthusiast who wants great shots of my active kids (life events and sports). Primarily stills but I am also looking forward to using my next camera as for video as well. Sometimes my current camera and lens are a bit cumbersome, especially for my wife so I would like to go a bit lighter and more compact. Love the range of the Tamron lens but I am beginning to become more aware of the limitations of this lens, especially in lower light. I realize with my lens choices for my next camera will add some weight (although still less than my current lens) but I think we can live with that especially if either of the new lenses give sharper results. Just looking for some advice and your recommendations. Keep up the great work!

On image quality using a regular 50mm 1.8 lens, which camera would have the BEST quality? D7100, D5500 or A6000?

IN day to day shooting you would have a hard time seeing any real difference. In low light the D5500 pulls ahead, slightly,

PhotoRec Toby Awesome.. from the research I've been doing, it seems that, FOR ME, the a6000 is a all-around better camera. Thank you and great review.

I'm planning to purchase the D5500 with two lenses within the next 2 weeks. For family-type pictures, which 2 specific lenses would you recommend?
@juzzonmorris5 жыл бұрын
If possible get a 35mm 1.8/2.8 lense. If you can't afford that, I'd get the 50 mm 2.8 lense along with a 17-50mm2.8 lense (sigma makes a good one for the Nikon)

Hey, I am just starting off into cameras. I've been reading a lot recently. Can I ask for your opinion? As a first DSLR, should I go for the more affordable 5300 or 3300 and use the money on a prime lens? Or get the 5500?

I have a question and I really hope you can help me with this. I am stuck between choosing this or the fujifilm X-T10. I like how the X-T10 is compact and i can bring it with me around no problem but It has expensive lenses whereas nikon has a lot of affordable great lenses. What would your suggestion be? Please help me
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
+richard yap The D5500 really isn't that much larger than the Fuji. I'd probably go for the safe choice of the Nikon.
@wiltonnemenzo2759 жыл бұрын
+PhotoRec Toby yes the nikon is the safe choice but i like how the X-T10 is very low profile when you bring it around the streets with you rather than a dslr. The only thing holding me back from getting the fuji is that the nikon has better cheaper lenses

+PuneTadka I would go for the D5300. It's cheaper and has the same specs. If portability is vital for your photography, go for the D5500, otherwise stick with the D5300.

A great review! Just a point or two I'd like to mention. When comparing to the a6000 lens selection, Sony has mostly negated that advantage, with the metabones (sp?) adaptor. So it can accommodate any of those other lenses from Canon or Nikon, in addition to Sony, and e-mount lenses. It also shoots at more than twice the rate. (11fps) It does not however, have the touch, fully articulating screen. The D5500 is an attractive choice though. The a6000 does have a lot of manual options and technical advantages, like eye auto focus. While very competitive, I still think the a6000 offers the most bang for the buck, but not by much.

Just one little side note: I don't think the D7100 and the 70D are really comparable, since they are in an upper level in any category from build quality, to usability. Sure the price might be close, since both are now getting oldish, and this new bodies are way too expensive, compared to the upper class.
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
This is a proactive attempt to answer the questions I get daily on the current D5300 or D7000/D7100. I think my slide shows the D7100 isn't really comparable - it offers LOADS more features but people ask - so there are the differences. :)
@GiuseppePipia9 жыл бұрын
Exactly! People are really more body oriented rather than the whole ecosystem, not realizing that there's more than just the camera to a picture. Oh well, if they have enough spare money they should get either the D4S or the 1D-X, and I'm sure they will still complain about not getting good pictures! xD

+PhotoRec Toby Hello. Please guide me for the following. I am purchasing a new nikon d5500. The major concern is now regarding the purchase of lenses. I have made up my mind to go for a nikon prime 50 f1.8. The other lens i am confused between is nikon 18-140 and 55-300. Plz suggest. Please do the needfull and oblige. Warm regards.
@hunter-hh2mn9 жыл бұрын
+vineeth narayan I'm not Toby, but I would go for the 18-140. It's more versatile and lets in more light. If you're looking for a 55- lens, I would recommend the 55-200. It's not that much different from the 55-300, and is way cheaper.

Hi, would you pick a D5500 or D7100 for a trip to Iceland (I see you've been there too) ?
@elvinlewis42338 жыл бұрын
You have a similar style to Northrup, but it is your own. A bit more meticulous, but I like it. I bought the a6000 for my wife, will finally get a prime lens for it, then I will get the d5500 for myself, since I still have a "thing" for dslr's. I'm glad you mentioned the d7100 because it's worthy of consideration. But, I don't want to get "that" serious about it, and as you mentioned, I just want a good camera that's above average quality, not too big, and accomodates different lenses. d5500 wins for me. Great review, and clears up any hesitation on my decision. I'd buy from your link, but another retail outlet has some ridiculous bundle deals for this model. (notice I didn't name them, lol) But I did subscribe and bump that like button!

you said you wouldn't upgrade from 5300 to 5500 since im buying my first dslr and have had my eye on the d5300 for a while, before the 5500 came out providing i can live without a touchscreen, are the other improvements worth the extra hundred pounds or so buying the d5500 over the previous d5300. or should i just get the d5300 and use the little bit of money saved on other equipment

Hi Toby, I'd really appreciate some help!! I'm really struggling to pick a camera. I am a beginner, I want to get in to landscape photography and perhaps some portraits. Which camera do you suggest: D5500 or D7100? I understand that as I develop as a photographer, the D7100 may offer some more features for me so maybe go for that one, or do you feel that the D5500 with decent lenses would be better? I don't want to spend money on a camera that I will outgrow easily, which is my concern. Also, which lenses do you recommend for landscape and portraits? Sorry for all the questions, as a beginner, this is a little daunting and I'm just so unsure what to get!!
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Emma Jordan For general photography like landscapes the D5500 is hard to outgrow - it offers awesome image quality and is nicely portable. D7100 is noticeably bigger and heavier. I'd go D5500 and spend money on a nice lens like Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 for landscape work.

if you travel a lot i would go for the 18-140, it covers a large spectrum in one lens so it's easy to take with you. 50 50 + 70-300 just doesn't give you enough coverage so it would need to be accompanied by a 18-55

Hi, im 16, looking for my first camera. I have narrowed it down to the d5500 and the dmc-g7, i know the nikon has better image quality, would i be missing out on 4k if i didnt get the g7? and is the 1080p good enough quality from the nikon? i want both great video and images.
