It delivers the tough off-road performance only available from a high-torque, high-output diesel engine, while achieving a low-noise, quiet ride and improved fuel economy.
Original ladder frame for high durability and reliability, with improved on-road comfort while maintaining outstanding off-road driving performance
Prototype specifications
Length 4,890 mm; Width 1,870 mm; Height 1,920 mm; Wheelbase 2,730 mm
Engine 1GD-FTV Diesel 2.8-liter turbo (Maximum output 150 kW (204 PS) Maximum torque 500 N・m)

The problem is that the American public justifies value based on short term gain. The more luxurious and high performing a vehicle is, the more it justifies for it’s expensive price. Plus most Americans don’t buy cars to own it for 20 or 30 years so they don’t see it as a long term investment. Something like this could be expensive but yet doesn’t bring the short term value Americans demand. Such as high power output and high luxury. This could work in the USA but Toyota has to package it like the G wagen and make it an exclusive model. They also need to meet government regulations with efficiency & safety by modify it for the US market.

@@faheemabbas3965 I couldn't agree more. I'm appalled. We rarely get the best models here in the US - the land of the fat and 'bigger is better'. Toyota shortchanged us with the GR Yaris, giving us a heavier, watered-down version of what is essentially a vastly different car. The same goes for this 70 series LandCruiser. I'd choose it over a Range Rover that's priced at double or even triple the cost. Then again, I suppose Toyota isn't to blame. America sets the worst car trends on earth.

Hi from Australia. I've had my 70 series, (same as this 76 wagon) for ten years. Mine is the second upgrade, 2013 model, single turbo 4.5L V8 manual. I've fitted front and rear air lockers, a 175-liter fuel tank, OME lift kit and HD springs, duel batteries and the mandatory bull-bar and lights. It effortlessly tows a 26' caravan. I fully intend running it to one million kms plus, and this while tackling some of the most inhospitable places on earth. Rugged and simple. I have absolute confidence it will outlast me. 😊Cheers.

Unfortunately we have to deal with things like crash standards, emissions, and the horrible reputation that diesel has earned through companies like Volkswagen. I own a 3 door FJ70 which is basically a box on wheels. It had the 4L V6 which is far too powerful for the size of the vehicle. I had it converted from a manual to an auto and upgraded the suspension to a slightly softer ride to make it more comfortable in city driving. It is a wonderful vehicle and considering that it's from the 80s it's still quite well built. If you can get your hands on one, please do. It's a true off road legend. It's very fun to drive thru our dunes here in Saudi.

Most people who say they will buy one if they offer it in the US won't buy one. It's slow, it's rough, it's uncomfortable, and it's expensive. People buy these because their lives and lives of others depend on it. It's not for mall crawling or a casual weekend trip which most people in US buy "offroad" SUVs for.

My brother in Australia has one of these. His has the 4.5 litre single turbo V8, diesel with 5 speed manual. For years they have only been available with the V8 and manual. Soon in Australia not only will you still be able to get the V8 diesel and still only with the manual, but for the first time auto version as well, but you can only have this with the 2.8 litre single turbo 4 cylinder diesel. The 4 cylinder has 50 Nm more torque than the V8, and the same power as the V8. Like you said Kirk they are expensive, but they are a heavy duty version of the Land Cruiser.

This is what you call a proper LC, not that other plastic electric concept junk, which I hope nevet gets made. But the price will be steep for such a basic vehicle, more than most will want to pay for a daily driver. It will appeal to those who spend more time off road than on. I really like it, but would not buy it as it would be a major downgrade from what I have now, and woukd have to probably pay as much as I did for the LC prado I have now. But I will be checking this out at the Japan mobility show on Monday, when I go there.
