How big is too big for a desktop computer monitor? Norm lives with LG's 43-inch 4K monitor for a month, and shares his experience using it for daily web browsing, photo editing, and gaming. The extra screen real estate of the 43UD79-B takes getting used to, but there are some tradeoffs.

THANK. YOU. for this review. JUST what I wanted to hear. EVERYONE's focusing on the gaming aspect of this, but you're taking the all-around bits and pieces of it aka everyday work. That's great to see. I was quite certain to go for this monitor to begin with, but your review convinced me furthermore. This monitor will be close to perfect for my daily use as I will do sound, photo and video editing, multi-tasking + browsing quite a lot, having multiple video streams up AND even casual console and PC gaming. Right now, I sit about 100cm~ away from the monitor, and my biggest monitor is 48", but that's a TV, so it's not exactly the best solution for my purposes. But this monitor will surely fulfill my needs completely, more or less. The fuzzy edges may seem to be deal breaker for a lot out there, but I guess I'll survive that considering everything else the monitor have in place. One question: What are the dimensions of the stand? I cannot find it anywhere... I find the dimensions for the screen with and without the stand, but not of the stand itself... Thanks for the review!

That is a lot of display (I'm another run-Windows-at-100% user), but I can imagine getting used to it, especially for photo editing or running multiple programs side-by-side. Thanks for reviewing it for us, Norm. Great content, as always. (Also enjoying those peripherals and knickknacks, from the TNG keyboard to the Blade Runner gun and horse replicas!)

Not sure about this particular monitor but I have the dell 43" monitor. The edges appear to be fuzzy when your head is in the middle of the screen, but it's due to the size of the monitor and that it is a flat panel. The fuzziness arises because of the difference in viewing angle between straight on when your face is in front of the screen, to a steep angle when you are peering towards the edge of the screen. If you move your head (not ideal I know) the fuzziness will go away on the edges

I mean on mine it looks like I have about 1cm around the entire thing that looks shadowy, Not really sure if thats the same as fuzzy, but on my dell monitor it looks like the last cm all around is at a lower brightness, but when move my head instead of just turning my head, the brightness appears to match the rest of the panel

Cyber Exile I have and enjoy my monitor. Fuzzy I think was the wrong term for that, Dim outter strip if you view it from an angle ONLY is probably the correct verbiage. Straight on you can’t see it. Think it has to do with IPS stuff honestly. I haven’t had any time while video editing, photo editing that I thought I’m really missing out on the centimeters in the corners of this huge monitor.

I think the most important feature for future tv models, is to have optional 1 to 4 screen viewing option, multiple viewing is amazing. Playing a game with sport on, and a podcasts playing and twitch or face book on, would be a good tv experience.

I have this Monitor, I love it and never thought it was too big. There’s one weird thing I noticed on mine, if you have a bright Window against a grey background there is slight white vertical streak of white going straight up and down the screen.

I use the Dell equivalent monitor, similar size and specs. Once nice feature on the Dell is programmable buttons on the front panel that allow me to switch the monitor to another input configuration with fewer button presses, my single port KVM swaps my second monitor between my pc and mac, and the buttons on the Dell swap it's input. It also has that backlight fadout at the edges. The solution I have comes from using a window tiling program(Divvy works for me, both on my windows machine and mac). The program supports adding a small border that is not used around the edges of the screen for when it moves windows and that is enough to keep me from noticing the fade out. It's nice to have some preset window positions, too. I use four quadrants and an option to have a bigger central window or full screen(minus the borders). The setup I have is almost identical to this, with my side monitor not rotated, and I agree that it took a bit to get used to, but my productivity is up and I enjoy it more. As for gaming, I don't do the more active games that often, so I've not had the issue with the HUD being too far out, but using games like Factorio(my current play one) it works great and is a real blast to play on. While expensive, I'm glad I got this monitor.

If your fast pace gaming close-up, it's probably at 1080p or 1440p to get a consistent frame rate depending on your hardware, so just scale to 1x somewhere in the center, if the monitor lets you? Then you just have a 28-inch 1440p monitor or a 21 inch 1080p monitor if I did the math correctly :-D (that said, I have had several 4k monitors that can't do 1x scaling or proper pixel doubling for 1080p without aliasing/blur)

i use a 1080p tv screen as my monitor. today's ultra wide monitors are good horizontally, but not enough vertically. this usually results in extra space on the sides when watching videos. Using a TV gives you the extra vertical screen real estate and videos fill the entire screen.

the *sweet spot* rule of thumb is to aim for the 100pixel per square inch range and just choose the size of the monitor and make sure it matches. you may need a 2K or 1080dp or 4k .. just make sure it's 100ish pixel per inch and you will be HAPPY

Would be cool to see how a similar sized 43" 4K TV from LG (43UJ750V or 43UJ630V) or TCL (P-series) compares as a monitor. I've used a projector or a TV as my main display for a decade now and since I last moved, I have my TV about 8½ (2.5m) feet from my sofa and I'm thinking of upgrading an old 42" 1080p TV to the aforementioned models. At $450-700 for a 4K HDR TV with local dimming etc., they aren't too shabby.

I've been using a 40-inch Philips Brilliance BDM4065UC for a couple of years for media editing and software development. It uses a 4K (UHD) VA panel. I calibrate the monitor with an X-Rite i1Display colorimeter and have been very happy with the results. My work distance is typically 20-28 inches. I like the ultra-dark black point of its VA panel because I edit in a dark environment and much of the media I edit is fairly dark with deep shadow detail. In the past this has been a big weakness for IPS panels---they have terrible black points because of their higher backlight bleed. What's your opinion of the black point of the 43UD79-B? What I'd ideally like is a 50-55 inch 4K monitor that does 3D. I'd prefer a passive system (polarized) if it's bright enough. But I'd take an active 3D system (LCD shutter) if that's all that's available. I can't use a 4K UHDTV because I need DP connection since that's the only output my workstations have that will do 4K at 60 Hz. Plus, TVs seldom make very good monitors.

I use three 21,5" 1080p monitors in portrait mode just for playing Battlefield 1 and I can tell that it is soo much more immersive and over all better experience than my other setup's 29" Ultrawide. With the triplemonitor setup I can bump FOV up to 90 without feeling any fisheyeish distortion. I also tuned the minimap settings and made the map alot bigger so it's a lot easier to perceive spotted enemies on the radar. And seeing enemies in game environment is also alot easier from a distance. c :

I’ve been using a 49 inch curved Samsung tv as a monitor for over a year now and it’s a perfect fit for me. It’s got a higher pixel density than my old 27 inch Dell 1920x1200 monitor, supports HDR, has a remote, a beautiful slim metal bezel and feet and pretty good sound. 60Hz @ 30ms is good enough for me but I wouldn’t mind seeing that improved. Also color accuracy in the extreme corners is slightly off but in practice that’s not noticeable. I chose this size because of it’s pixel density and, for me, the middle of the screen would still be at eye level, going even bigger would mean I would have to look up constantly. And although 34 inch 21:9 monitors are very cool they just don’t have enough height for my liking.

Using a 48 samsung JU7500 4k tv as a monitor. In my opinion that is perfect for 100% 4k windows scaling and wonderful to use.

My secondary monitor pre-dates LED backlights. My primary is now, apparently, only competitive with current budget models. Maybe it's time to upgrade.

Hi, sorry but I do not understand English. Is it possible to give me a quick summary of what is the result? Good choice or not? (web development and photoshop). I hesitate between that, otherwise a TV 49", or maybe 3 screens 1080p ... Thank you!

Been saying it for over a year now, 27" 32" 4K monitors are a joke. Overpriced just to have to squint and not even truly be able to appreciate 4K resolution (those sizes more suited for 1440). 43" would be interesting but of course it's going to be expensive as fuck and not be able to go past 60hz. For non-gaming, it might actually be decent, just still too expensive to be practical for at least 5 years to come. 55"+ is the sweet spot for 4K as you can truly admire the beauty especially with LED backlighting and high contrast. Since nothing in 4K can do 144hz+, best to just buy a 55" 4K TV for ~ $500. TCL makes one that even Ellen has been giving away that sells at Sams Club for $400 and has Roku built in.

The actual 2020 model LG 43UN700-B, look pretty much the same specs, anyway I'm wondering if it's enough good for photo editing. You seems to say yes but my worry is the pixel density. Do you still use it since?

I had to exchange the first 43UD79-B because USB didn't charge or connect iPhone to iTunes on 2017 MBP with touch bar. The second monitor: USB-port 1 works fine. USB-port 2 doesn't seem to synch iPhone 6s Plus with iTunes. Did I get a second bad monitor?

After reading www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-usage/pc-monitor I picked a 43" 4k samsung. I love it. I use it for work/gaming/etc. After a while you'll start taking the increased size for granted. It's really handy for split screening multiple browsers/etc/etc.

regarding the fuzziness around all 4 sides you can turn on 'Overscan' in the OSD menu and it will fix that issue. You said LG released an update for the flickering I've got a USB-C cable for updates but I haven't received any notification of updates any ideas?

If I plug in my Macboc into the USB-C port and use it as a HUb, where do you plug into the second monitor? Into the 43 inch monitors HDMI? ( to use as second monitor) or do I need a separate Hub?

Hello, Very interesting video! I see you working on Lightroom in the video. I've been interested in this monitor too for several weeks (LG 43UN700-B) because I'm a professional photographer and I was wondering if this monitor had real capabilities for photography, with reliable colors? Most of the videos I've seen on this monitor, people talk more about video editing and office stuff. I was also wondering if it could mirror my MacBook Pro screen as closely as possible? Can we really improve its display with a colorchecker or is it useless because its capacities are limited? Thank you for your video and for your help!

I still say the best screen I ever used is a CRT 21" with RGBHV Connection sadly I can't remember the name now but the resolution was beyond 1080P as standard. And the RGBHV Connection made it flicker free and steady. I also used a Acer Predator 32" 4K Gsync screen. XB321HK And a 27" 1080p 144hz asus screen. I used to be a hardcore cs 1.3 to 1.6 player 8 hours a day+ grinding haha. Would you be able to recomend me this LG 43"? Today I'm older and I still enjoy games but now I play games to chill and I love adventure and exploring in game sometimes FPS but mainly games like GTA V, Skyrim, Fable and alot of older games. I mainly watch movies today on my pc with the little time I have after work house family etc. :) I'm still running 2x 1080Ti so framerate is still no issue at 4k 60hz what worries me is screen tearing thats why I bought the G-Sync 32 inch. but I sold it.

Thanks a lot Adam for a very comprehensive review! How's the colour accuracy for photo editing? I'm planning to replace my current Samsung 32" S32D850T because of aging issues and looking at this monitor mainly for PS and Capture One editing. This is a very good compromise on price and performance, so very much appreciate if you could let me know.

What is this monitor recommended windows scale? my 32 inch 4k shows: 150% (Recommended). 100% scale is always perfect, higher PPI than size is bad viewing experience for some applications.

As someone who uses a iiyama 40" 4K MVA monitor and play's BF1 almost daily... I can say that I have no idea what he is talking about when it comes to fast paced gaming. I had no pro adjusting to it over my 34" ultrawide 2560x1080 display.

I would probably use this display for what it is marketed as. 4 Full HD Displays in one. So having a display too big would not be an issue for me, as games would run only in a quarter of that screen.

Nothing is ever too big but I do wish they would curve it slightly at the edges so the eye line of sight is always perpendicular to the screen surface.

I've worked with the dell 43" 4k variant and you really have to sit back a bit or put the monitor as far back as possible on your desk, which imo defeats the purpose. Personally 21:9 super widescreen is the thing for me.
@Charok1
@Charok1 6 жыл бұрын
32 inch is as large as anyone needs if sitting at a desk, as long as it's at high resolution. 34 is too extended with eye movement. Anything larger should be a TV and far away on a couch. Monitor pixel density is a waste of money compared to a regular TV that way. I went cheaper with a Viotek 32" 16:9 144Hz and I won't need any "upgrade" again... except maybe from 1440p to a higher resolution when computers are faster for 4K, haha.
