Hands-On with the Brand New Tudor Black Bay 54

Hi everyone! This is a hands-on review of the new Tudor Black Bay 54 released earlier this week at Watches & Wonders 2023.

Thanks for this video! We are essentially the same body size. I'm nearly 6'1", 175 pounds and also have a 6.5 inch wrist. As someone who owned the BB58 in the past, I was a bit confused when I heard of the BB54 as I already thought the BB58 was the perfect size (especially for people with smaller wrists) but after seeing it in a few videos now on several people with similar size wrists, I can see how amazing it looks! I'm also a fan of all the subtle differences the 54 has over the 58. I like the updated crown, love the monochromatic bezel and the different seconds hand. Like you said, it combines that gorgeous 50's Sub look, but in a new, affordable package (affordable compared to getting a 50's Tudor or Rolex Sub that is).

I think watches seem way bigger on video or photo. Always thought the BB58 was too big until I had it on my wrist

@@Jon-hm2wu I agree with this. I think it’s because most of the time you get to see the watch up close in videos, which is why I tried to do something a little different at the end of this video. I think it’s important to see it on body to be able to envision the scale of the watch properly. Thanks for the comment!

Great Video - I'm so interested in this watch. I can see it next to your Sub - but did it "feel" much smaller on the wrist? The Sub is around 47.6 - so they should be pretty close and, for me, lug to lug seems to be what matters more than dial size. A 46mm lug to lug seems like it would be good for wrists even over 7". Thought?

took me a while to get used to the lug shape on the 54, was a bit odd looking at a rectangular profile. Now that my eyes have adjusted, I can see why the designed it like this. It gives this 37mm so much more presence on the wrist. It's quickly become the watch that is most comfortable to wear, Tudor have sure hit a home run!

I love the Sub and all the other 40+mm dive watches but I fully agree with the idea that BB54 could be the best as an everyday dive watch!

Yes! There's something about a midsized watch/diver that works better for me as an everyday wear. You don't bang it on things as often and it weighs less. Win-win!

I went to my AD today to look at the 54. I have a blue 58 that I bought last year. I have small wrists as well. The main problem I had in the AD (and when I felt my excitement go lower) was actually when it came to turning the bezel vs. the 58. I found that edges are more polished vs the 58, and it's grip was not at all the same as the 58. That was one thing I LOVE about the 58, is how easy it is to grip for being such a small / thin bezel. I just assumed the 54 would be the same (or better) and it was not at all what I expected. Similar situation when it came to the crown. yes, smaller, but the "grip" was not nearly as nice. Shame, they should have kept that the same! Also.. I did not really feel it that much smaller (lug to lug) in the metal. thinner, yes.. but sitting here looking down my arm, the lug to lug is almost the same in real life and that is the biggest thing with small wrists. Lastly, was the fact I have too many black watches, LOL. and the blue 58 is so nice, especially outside in the sun! Anyway, figured I would share.

I was looking for a comparison like this, I have a 7 inch wrist and a blue 58....if I want to switch to the 54, it has to be in blue, but if there isn't much of a difference in terms of the lug to lug, might as well stick to the 58

@@aneeshwagle8892 Yes, this is about where I am at as well now with the choice. I have the BB58 blue and it's great. With that said, IF I had the black 58 then, yes, I think I would sell it and get this one as a replacement. But, the blue 58 is just so much different, feels more modern and I think is a better choice (especially if you have many other black watches as I do). I actually am thinking about buying the ranger braclet for the 58 to have the T-fit system and then I think its perfect!

@@travisharrisphotography haha, I'm facing a similar predicament. I'm planning to build a small, diverse four watch collection. I don't want to have watches with the same colors, and I already have another watch with a black dial planned, so Tudor has to be blue or green 😅🤣

@@aneeshwagle8892 100% Me too! I have a black dial Seamaster, then I have a White dial GSAR, and the Blue 58. (and a black dial Sinn 556i). I also came to the conclusion, that getting the 54 AND keeping the 58 wont work (for me). Because once I get used to the smaller 54, putting on a slightly larger version of that in blue, will not last long before I want to take it off and go back to the 54. So... yeah, I would need to sell the 58 to make the 54 happen and because of the color difference wont make sense. and, my other points are also true, the bezel is much better to turn on the 58 as well as the crown, and honestly I love the hash marks on the bezel to 15-min. I also love the fact the blue 58 is less "vintage" looking vs. the back and gold. That I know is subjective, but never the less.. it just feels newer, more current and really is amazing.

I think it’s a lovely thing. The reduced case thickness is a big winner for me. I wish they would put a burgundy bezel on it and I’d be heading to the AD tomorrow. Great review.

I just showed up to the Tudor boutique where I live and they had one for sale! The sales associate agreed to sell it to me. This type of things seems to be a little hit or miss. Sometimes you get an awesome SA and sometimes they want to make you jump through hoops.

Think I will get the 54, it's actually everything I'm looking for as the perfect dive watch. There might be competitor models for a bit less money (2-3k€) from Tag Heuer, Mido, Longines, Fortis, etc. but given the fact that the comparable Rolex Submariner (no date) costs nearly 3x more and given the likely value stability of this watch and its in-house calibre it still has a very competitive price. I'm sometimes not sure about how much I like the snowflake hour hand and the yellowish/goldish dial details compared to white/silver ones, but there is always something to complain about and I think this watch is still the best mix on the market for me. I think I will purchase one with rubber band and then see after a while if I can change the wrist band to a pin buckle version (really prefer that) and if somebody offers a see through case bottom. Overall, awesome watch, great addition to the BB 58 and BB (41).

It's a very nice watch! Interesting that you have 2 BB58s, but I agree the BB54 would make for a great replacement for the BB58 Black. I really love that the BB54 looks like that 1954 Tudor Sub.

If I was going to get the BB58, I'd definitely get the blue. Too much gilt accents on the black BB58, especially the bezel. The BB54, though is pretty darn perfect. I just wish they'd done away with the faux rivets, but that's really minor in comparison of everything they've done right with this model.

4:34 wow both watches are beautiful. BTW In regards to the thickness distribution, I find the 58's chunkier mid-case with much thinner caseback less comfortable on bracelet vs the Sub, but more comfortable when on rubber strap. The 54 might be that a nicer middle ground but I'm not sure I want one due to already owning the 58

The thickness of this watch and the 58 are less than a millimeter different. Both watches have basically the same crystal height, about 1.5mm. So in terms of thickness, you don’t notice the difference. The lug to lug is also only about a millimeter less so the real difference you’ll notice is the case diameter. That’s it.

Good review! Watch looks great on your wrist. Strange that it only tapers to 18mm, considering the BB58 and Pelagos 39 both taper to 16mm. Are you able to weight the BB54?

I will weigh it for you once my scale comes in! Also, I should have been more clear about the taper. I broke the calipers out today, and the bracelet tapers down to 16mm, but the clasp measures at 18mm. So it tapers down, but then bumps back out a bit for the clasp.

Yes,, and this is what I was disappointed with then I tried it on at the AD. When I took off my 58 and set it down, and threw on the 54.. I instantly felt like I was basically putting on the same watch with a smaller dial. It did not "feel" any smaller to me and the lug to lug was almost identical (no real "wow" difference) and with smaller wrist I was hoping this would have been the case. They should have gone 45mm Lug 2 lug. :-(

There’s no doubt it’s a really lovely timepiece, would I sell my bb58 to get this this bb54? Probably not. I have a Tudor submariner @36mm and it says “submariner” on the dial . Then I’ve my 34 yr old Rolex Sea dweller 4000 with a beautiful ghost bezel. Simply beautiful. This is definitely for someone who hasn’t the bb58 and wants something new.

Agree the new bracelet is an improvement, but I feel 39mm is a perfect size for a sports / dive watch. I also love the gilt bezel numerals, red iconic triangle (Rolex Big Crown) and the snowflake seconds counter weight of the BB58. Also the lugs are proportionally bigger on the 54 giving it a less elegant, squared look. I think I’ll keep my BB58.

There's no counterweight on the BB58. The snowflake design is on the end of the hand closest to the minute track.

Thanks for the review. I’d really like to see the 54 on a variety of straps. The lugs are proportionately longer than the 58 and with the 20mm width on a 37mm case it’d be interesting to see how square the case appears when off it’s bracelet.

Great review! Well done! I've been waiting for this exact review! I've got a black Sub Date 41mm and i am seriously considering this Tudor Black Bay 54 as it appears so much slimmer. I'm assuming it's much lighter then the Sub as well? The Sub is an amazing watch however it's a bit on the chunky/hefty side even on my 7.5 inch wrist. I'm waiting for the boutiques to get this Tudor in store as exhibition pieces to try it on. Hopefully it won't be too small on larger wrist. However looking at the comparison it should be just okay.

Tudor fans are a funny bunch. Literally the only thing brand new about this watch is the size. They shrunk a BB58. Amazing. If you love the look of a sub get on the waiting list - don’t fancy the wait then get any plethora of sub homages that don’t cost $$$ like Tudor. Homage is a homage really.

@@sikanderansari23 I’ve zero issue with justifying Watch purchases on silly inconsequential details - hell I do that with every new watch! I do take issue with those snobs who love the Tudor stuff but are first to bash other Rolex homages - especially affordable ones - as unoriginal and slightly dodgy. Tudor is in effect a luxury high end version of Steinhart - which is fine by me but rarely accepted by those who buy Tudor. And no being a sister brand doesn’t somehow give it a special pass - what gives it a pass to homage Rolex is that it’s perfectly legal to do so - same pass Steinhart, Davosa, Squale etc get in the actual real world.

I actually like the less aggressive taper on the rivet bracelets since you don't notice the steps between link sizes as much as on the more aggressively tapering bracelets, like an Oris Divers 65 that tapers 20mm to 14mm.

@@interianesq I agree. I went to look at the Explorer 1 36mm and the aggressive taper made the watch feel dainty on my wrist. Albeit - I'm a bigger guy, so 36mm is on the smaller size for me, anyway, but I have other 37 and 38mm watches that I wear frequently. But the super aggressive taper made a smaller watch "feel" so much smaller. I'm gladd the 40mm Explorer is out now!

So, there is some confusion here.. The taper should be the same as the BB58.. the only difference is a fraction of mm on the clasp (the clasp on the BB58 is apx 17.3mm wide and the new T-fit is 18mm). But, the taper is the same on both watches.

Not sure why people tell their height and weight when describing the fit of a watch. Both are totally irrelevant. Wrist size/shape are what matter.

I think it might be helpful for people to get the whole picture. I would say I have a small wrist for my size, but to each their own!

I wonder when these will be available at online retailers like jomashop? My AD said do not expect them to have it until mid to late summer 2023.

Yeah I’m not quite sure but I think these will eventually be as available as the BB58 has gotten. It might just take a little time.
