I Remake An Odd 1878 Hand Plane Chisel Patent [Patent Remake]

I fully remade a tool that was patented in 1878. This specific patent in on a very odd design which includes a hand plane within the handle of a chisel. You can see that patent document here: patents.google...
I decided to use brass and Brazilian cherry as the materials for the tool. I did not have any specific measurements to reference so all decisions on design were made through the patent drawing. While the final outward appearance of the tool is close to the patent design, I did choose to attach the brass portions by threading them into the wood plane body, for extra strength.
I have not made a hand plane solely by carving it out with chisels, so this was a large challenge for me. I did practice several times and found that purchasing some specific plane-making tools (plane floats) were key to success.
I found this patent recreation process to be incredibly rewarding and it was great seeing each piece come together. I hope to do many more in the future.

Yes! This is so good, I love it! To be a real pro with this tool, one would know precisely how many taps it would take to chop dovetails, while simultaneously setting the plane iron to plane them flush later.

yes, as he was demonstrating it I realized the issue with adding a sharp blade to the tip of something you forcefully jab forward that often gives unexpectedly. I'm saying I think someone is going to get stabbed with the chisel while planing something and someone is also going to slice their hand open on the place while chiseling something. You would need to remove the other tool while using it or at the very least put covers on the blades. HTR should put out a part 1.5 where he makes the covers, they would help for storage too.

The invention appears to be a bit of a solution in search of a problem, or an example of new invention that consists of combining two existing inventions, and almost invariably ends up doing both tasks at least slightly less well than the original tools. But recreating it was a fantastic idea for a project/video. I love stuff like this.

Seriously guys, as if this was the point. Your view on 'the best tool' is completely irrelevant isn't it? It's a thing of beauty, it has some utility, and I'm prepared to bet that in the hands of a craftsman could produce work of a quality way better than that provided by tool experts with whatever they knowingly describe as 'better'. Anyway, I don't see why it wouldn't make a perfectly good small plane (you'd remove the chisel blade to use it, surely) and a decent chisel. I'm reminded of a comment about, I think, Victor Barna, a British table tennis champion of the 50's/60's, of whom it was said he would beat the second best player in Britain using a frying pan. Skill matters more than brand.

This might be really specialized for certain jobs, or attempt of making universal tool. I dont know witch is it, but i kinda get when you are on the second floor fitting windows and need to take just little bit off this could do the job and fits into pocket.

Because having to remove and readjust parts on half of it is convenient when switching to the alternate function. Either that or plane away a good bit of skin when trying to get a better grip on the chisel, or stab the chisel into something when trying to plane something. Understandable that this thing never went anywhere or caught on. Ok... It seems more realistic that it just uses the same blade in either spot rather than having two blades for different functions at the same time. But most people find plane adjustments fidgety to get right and don't want to mess with that much outside of needing to sharpen its blade. Not to mention chiseling puts a blade at more risk for getting nicked, which is the last thing you want on a plane's blade. So it's still not going to be popular for that reason.
