Great video. As a long time EV owner (since 2011) we've been using NEMA 6-50 connector with our original Blink home charger, our EVSE upgraded Nisaan Leaf charger, and currently the Tesla mobile connector (with NEMA 6-50 adapter). You should have attached the clamp to the wire and fed it into the panel from underneath and then put the lock ring on inside the panel as this is likely not code compliant this way. Also on the outlet side you could clamp it down rather than leave it loose and pull the whole box out if you had to access it rather than leave it loose; no compromises to code for people's safety.

No, the 6-50 doesn’t have a neutral so you’ll probably use the red and black. Use a voltage tester and make sure you get 220-240 volts across the red and black. You should also get 110-120 volts across black/ground and red/ground. There’s no need to test the white if you don’t need the neutral. Just cap it off.

@ziyulu Connect the two hots and the ground to the 6-50. But you need to verify the voltage, wire size and breaker size are correct. I can’t do that for you.

14-50 is more versatile because it has the neutral wire, even though Tesla doesn’t need it. 14-50s are often found in campgrounds to power sub-panels in big RVs.

Great work! I have a question: I see the Tesla mobile charger state a Max 32Amp for the NEMA 6-50. Does that mean the mobile charger will “regulate” the power to max 32 Amp even the 240V 6-50 plug is pushing 50 Amp?

I’m curious, is there any downfall in going to two-conductor (no return) versus three-conductor (dedicated return)? I know that the negative busbars and the ground busbars are bonded, but there has to be a reason/benefit for a dedicated return; I just don’t know what it is. Thoughts?

The neutral is only required if your device needs both voltages 240v and 120v.

Personally if I were building my own home from scratch and was planning on using an electric car, I would install a nema 6-50R, fed by 6awg AL SEU cable which is good for 40 amps, assuming the terminals are rated 60°C, since the max charging amps is 32, and 40 amps is 125% of 32 and a 50 amp receptacle is allowed on a 40 or 50 amp circuit. Much cheaper than 3 wire plus ground cable, which is a waste for a straight 240 volt load. You only need 3 wire with ground cable for a combo 120/240 volt load such as a range or dryer

Yes, in theory, on two separate circuits. But call an electrician for a load calculation to ensure you don’t have unreasonable expectations of your service panel.

Perfect timing. I started installing my nema 14-50. I can only run my power through the main panel and it has a bonded neutral and ground so I can’t finish the installation. I am forced to get the adaptor for 6-50 now and install the 6-50 outlet.

The fact that your neutral is bonded to ground in your panel is irrelevant. You can do a 14-50 or 6-50 either way.

I don’t know about other chargers, but I know the Tesla UMC only uses the 240-volt conductors. The neutral wire (120v) is not used. That’s my primary reason for making this video. People are hog wild for the 14-50 and it’s driving prices way up. The 6-50 is a great option.

I’m not sure what kind of connector your car came with. You may need to buy a Gen 2 UMC to get a 6-50 adapter.

Both. You can get the 6-50 adapter for your Tesla UMC, or you can get a J-1772 charger with a 6-50 plug. Video on this topic coming soon!

No, exactly the same charging speed. The 6-50 is just a cheaper alternative for people who have long runs. EVs don’t use the neutral wire anyway, so it’s completely unnecessary.

Thank you for making it easy. :) Only issue i have is when i check the voltage with my meter on one side and to the ground, im getting 109 volts and the other side i get 139 volts. not sure why its not 120 volts each side. did i get one of the wires crossed somewhere in the panel or inverter?

You need to ask the manufacturer of your EVSE if it will work without a neutral. Typically they will, but you need to be sure.

NEC 2020 says you need GFCI protection for EV chargers (625.54). Does the GFI protection in the charger itself cover that requirement?

No. The receptacle needs to be protected even when nothing is plugged in.

Yeah not sure why they did that. An electrician commented on this video that it’s a best practice to wrap red tape around a white wire that isn’t neutral.

If your using a cord feed that plug should be GFI protected … Should wrap some black tape around the white wire to show it is a feed wire . Romex connector should be mounted thread side in panel ..

11:00 the romex connector is upside down. Since you don’t have access to the bottom of the panel, you should clamp it on the cable, then feed it up through the hole in the wall. The locknut should be inside the panel, not the clamping part of the connector.

Since it's a national reaching video might as well add that GFCI in the garage are the requirements if your state or jurisdiction has adopted 2020 NEC or up. Which the state in the video, New Jersey has adopted 2020 NEC, but not all states have. Of course it never hurts to add GFCI to garage outlets, even if your jurisdiction doesn't specifically require it.

I absolutely said it was Romex 6/3. You need to buy a breaker matched to your panel. My breaker won’t work in every panel so if I linked it, a lot of people would need to return them.

The “-50” means it’s a 50-amp receptacle. It can only be used with a 50-amp circuit breaker.
