Hey brother, another handyman here from Northern Cali. Thank you for documenting your work! Appreciate all the effort that goes into your videos and the knowledge that your spreading out there. I have the same philosophy on pricing and finding customers. Word of mouth is priceless - coupled with hard work and dedication and a strong focus on quality and value - you have all the ingredients for a successful business. Also being punctual goes a long way. There is a huge demand in my area for skilled tradesman for jobs that are too small for contractors. If you can find that sweet spot between construction worker and contractor, you can make a very decent living. Many of the jobs I get I have to wear multiple hats on the same visit, this is very valuable to customers as it saves them the time and headache of coordinating with different contractors. Looking forward to seeing your finished carpentry side of the business start up, I have a similar vision for my future expansion. Keep up and God Bless!

btw. keep up the great work. my dad is in construction and has taught me a ton over the years. my wife is finally realizing my value. most of her friends husband's can even change a light bulb. I probably save 10k a year on my home doing my own remodels and repairs.

ataylor I just ordered my window decal to advertise my handyman business, and I am second guessing putting it on. I am buried right now just by word of mouth. I am afraid that the phone will ring and I won’t be able to provide a service and then that word will travel and I will end up with no business. LOL

Also the calls that come from the sticker are not referrals. A lot of them are time wasters just wanting to know how much you charge to do this or that. Looking for the lowest price.

I like your content and think it is great that you have the skills to do such a variety of repairs. One thing that turns me off though is some of your titles that include things like "Building a fence for rich people" and lots of stuff about how you charge different based on neighborhood, income, etc. Best to leave that out all together. I think more people would find it not needed and form a poor opinion of you as opposed to just keeping their income, status out of it. You are spot on though about referrals being the way to stay busy. Just my opinion, but I have been around the industry a long time and some things are not worth mentioning. Keep up the good work.

I think you are right. I have had a lot of messages from people in this type of business telling me not to give out that type of information. I think I'm going to keep the information more basic and less behind the scenes that people are not suppose to know about.

my father started his painting business about 40 years ago. it's where I'm currently employed at. we make somewhere in that ball park as well. what people don't understand is that we spend most of that money on material, gas and lunch. plus time spent driving around city to city. the number 1 most important rule is Customer satisfaction. #2 you really have to Care for the job that you are doing. ( if you don't Caren the customers will never be happy with the work) #3 the right tools and materials.

I started out in handy work. Unfortunately, I didn't make great money. I made good money, don't get me wrong. However, I was just starting out so I wasn't fast enough, or efficient enough for my liking. My education was in construction management so I was overqualified or unqualified depending on how you look at it compared to skilled labor. I definitely saw the potential for someone with more experience and skills to make an absolute killing if they planned properly and treated every job like it was important. Word of mouth was huge, it was surprisingly easy to get jobs after the first one. I run a design and renovation company now. It allows me to work slower and place a higher value on my work - which of course I do a lot less of.

Stevey, I have a mechanical engineering / manufacturing engineering background. I do consulting and product design most of the time, but I get burnt out fast on this stuff. Pay is good, though. I helped a friend paint a house last summer and it was amazing. Trying to do half and half. Can't find anyone to take me on. Those that do want to pay me $10/hr to be a general laborer. I understand, but it's not worth my time. Typical overqualified/underqualified gap. I have a lot of experience tinkering. Woodworking, welding, CNC, electronics, etc. Trying to figure out what kind of trade I can do on my own part time. Everyone here needs roofing but I'm pretty sure I'd lose my mind doing that all the time. I need to be using my brain while working, even if it's a trade. Ice fishing season is coming up and I'm thinking of building a few shacks and see if anyone bites. Would love to build really nice sheds. I know that sounds crazy, but I love small structures, and would love to build workshops and studios. Maybe accessory dwelling units. I don't know what to do.
@truecrimejungle
@truecrimejungle 6 жыл бұрын
Hey taiden, I feel like I was a lot like you! More of a tinkering background than an educated trade background! It's tough because it's hard to ask a stranger to pay you a lot of money to do something when they are probably looking for a handyman thinking it's a cheaper option than a trade. the key is finding a consistent amount of small jobs that are too small for contractors or trades to want to take on and do a lot of them! I think the key is finding those first few clients who are willing to take a chance on you and doing such good work it forces them to use you again and recommend you to other clients! I was lucky because my parents let me renovate their house when I was in university so I got to make a really nice portfolio of designs and construction I had already done. I was also lucky because I started out getting all my jobs through my parents neighbors. I just recently flipped a house and that's what gave me the confidence to start full renovations and charging for designs. Sounds like you have some education in engineering and experience in design in which you could use to sell yourself to clients as well! It's all about word of mouth so treat every job like it's your most important job. It's also is going to take a lot of practice to get to the level the handyman is at, he is so efficient, I love watching these videos lol

I have found make storage units that use a pallet jack. Take lumber and particle board. One palket per trade. That way is easy to arrange shop material. Electrical, plumbing, cement, demo of things like generic parts can save on dump fres and spare parts. I find many free things on craigslist. My cuz is supt his companies policy is dispose of all excess material at end of a job. His last job was heavy duty steel roofing that was wrong color. Manf shipped replacement material. And he was told dispose wrong color material. We roofed and sided two garages with free material. Only had to buy screws. So i rented a mini storage then bought a container. Nice one for material using pallet jack and second for finished product. Of course a concrete ramp for shop and containers. Can back cargo trailer into shop and containers. as

Have you every thought about becoming a Landlord or Real Estate Investor? If you install a door and receive $200-$400 versus doing it on your own property, installing i on your own property will pay dividends many years to come. Instead of working for 1 chunk of money you are working for streams of income that will pay you over and over. That's why I don't do handyman side jobs anymore because it detracts from my real estate investing.

Dont know what area you live in or if these are commonly used but if so could you do a video on installing a whole house tankless water heater? Im considering putting one in with a water softener and a video would be pretty helpful. I have the space in my breaker box for the additional circuits as it would be electric. Im not afrsid of tackling most things but dont want to spend that kind of money without a good video or an inflated sense of confidence.

Hey, sub'd recently and have been enjoying the vids, thanks. Question is how do you build up a customer base in the beginning. I know referrals and word of mouth are best, but starting off with a handful of customers the jobs have been coming in slow. Only so many people needing only so much done over the course of a year. Do you ever cold-call your past customers to see if they need anything else done? Have you ever used lead generation services like Home Advisor? Looking to get the ball rolling but its been slow going so far. Customers are happy, have called back for more work and have gotten a few referrals, but not as busy as I'd like. Good customers, just not enough of them. Thanks.

I really need to go back and try to find the resources I used. I searched the depths of the internet on sales. I found nothing that was designed specifically to a handyman. Up selling and just knowing how to ask for more money. How to instill confidence in the customer that you are worth more money. I will try to get a list together of the resources I used. The one thing I found is that all the different books and lectures all had the same few principles. The only difference was the guy explaining it to the audience in different ways.

Hey man, I started thinking about underselling myself so when I do good work, I over exceed my customers expectations, like you've mentioned in previous videos. So, I'm thinking about changing my name to "Good Enuff Handyman Services". My logo is a picture of a guy giving 2 thumbs up while shrugging his shoulders. Do you think that's a good strategy?

What licenses do you need to work as a handyman? Have you always worked in the trades?
@TheHandyman1

I have been in construction industry since I was in high school. licenses vary from city to city and state to state. Most areas you do not need a handyman licenses.

Careful... I live in Oregon... handyman by referral only (NO business cards or advertising) up to $400 per job...but, still a gray area if you are called out ($5000 fine)... check online and reputable licensing schools... they usually will submit your test etc and info you on license bond etc. Find a good hardware store in your area (not a box store) and find a referral for a contractor that needs the help, and willing to train. That's how I started...very profitable since then. Plus the great guys and gals in the trade to refer jobs... it always come back in the end!

The Handyman I have certain clients that I charge low prices from when first started and I was wanting to know your opinion about slowly going up on prices with them. I actually started going up on them already, but what do you think? My police friend's (client) house has basically been redone by me when I first started and he called me to do a kitchen LED light fixture and I told him $125, and he was like what happened to the 40 bucks a light fixture! Hahaha.... I told him those days are long gone. I charged low prices to get in the door and build up my craftsmanship. Now I can do decks, sheds, any floor, frp, small electric, small plumbing, etc, etc by myself. I actually love doing it as a hobby and not just the money. So do you think I should keep my prices low with my first clients (who are repeat) that I started with? They recommend me a lot also.
@TheHandyman1
@TheHandyman1 6 жыл бұрын
Thats how I did it. I have been creeping my prices up for years. I finally just last week got one of my long time customers to pay modern day prices. Is a balancing act of feeling them out and trying to give them the best price that makes you money and they still get good value for the money.

I’m trying to understand how it is you are pulling off $15k jobs. I know where I live, without a contractors license you are limited to jobs that are no more than $500. I’m not saying you do, but if you have a contractors license, why would you be calling yourself a handyman? Just trying to understand.

Do you live in one of the communist states? No license to do any of the work that I just got worth over $15,000. I just finished a $9,500 today The video will be out in a few weeks. I would never live in a state that held its citzens down like that. If I had no option to but to live there I certainly would be breaking that law.
