there are more and more good makers nowadays and it's starting to be quite easier to get a handpan in respect of the past. Just search on the web, facebook is a good place, contact directly the makers, avoid resellers, listen to handpans and learn the differences between a pan and a can, since it's also easy to buy bad instruments because of the hype.

I will never by a pantheon steel. Especially when a friend of mine told he he bought a first gen Hang Drum directly from the makers at a flute festival in the U.S. about ten years about for around $350. That's a far cry from what they are trying to sell them for today, isn't it? I'll be very happy with a couple of smaller, hand drums, Hapi Drums, or Moyo Drums.

Just a question, I'm very interested in these instruments, but my main concern is 1.) They're so expensive, how do I know which one to get for the price I'm paying, 2.) Is there anywhere I could experience the drum to know if it's even worth me buying, and 3.) Where would I even get one, PANArt doesn't sell them anymore and it's such a mysterious instrument.

+Christopher “Chris” James It is the type of instrument that in my mind due to the cost, rarity, maintenance and difficulty acquiring it the hang should just be sought if you are truly enchanted by the instrument. There are accessible alternatives that are more obtainable and if you are unsure of if you would even like to play they are probably a better place to start than with a search for one from PanArt.
@bubbanderson
@bubbanderson 8 жыл бұрын
+Christopher “Chris” James I saw David playing these with Dead Can Dance in London and was stunned by the sound. The PanArt ones are no longer available which is going to ramp up prices of 2nd hand ones ... they simply decided to focus on making a different instrument. There's an affordable electronic alternative coming onto the market mid 2016 in the shape of the Oval which is currently on Kickstarter. OK so it plays samples or acts as a MIDI controller and isn't as pretty as the real thing but looks like a fun thing to get started on for a fraction of the price. Looking forward to getting mine.

Handpans seem to use a lot of "plagal modes" in their scale range (i.e. 5th to 5th instead of tonic to tonic). So the integral scale is 5 b6 b7 1 2 3 5, with the root note in the middle of the range.

True. The basic shape could be stamped easily, and a self-taught AI machine could then tune each one with as much precision as a skilled human. It could then be industrially churned out like tin whistles.
@Zamerus
@Zamerus 5 жыл бұрын
I know this is a 5 year old comment but. There is an appeal to hand crafted instruments that actually have time put into them to make them sound good and look good. I would rather own an instrument crafted by another persons hands over something mass produced by a machine that was literally made alongside several items made the exact same moment.
@uellue
@uellue 5 жыл бұрын
Not an expert on this instrument, but I'd be surprised if they could be mass-produced in perfect tuning. The coarse shape surely, but there are too many sources of variation that would skew the tuning. Changes in raw material (thickness, composition, heat treatment) will have a lot of impact on the final shape and internal stresses. Changes in the manufacturing process, for example introduced by temperature changes or wear of the tools or slight differences in heat treatment (temperature distribution, gas flows, timing) can do the same. The list goes on. This is an incredibly complex instrument. You can hear how many vibration modes this shape has and how complex their interaction and coupling is. Subtle changes will have a tremendous impact on the sound. Making and tuning such an amazing piece of metal is an art and beyond my comprehension. Each one will be a unique work of art.

To the foolish people saying that these could be mass produced, you probably don't understand why some guitars cost 10 times as much as others. It is not because they are overpriced or rare. It is because musical instruments have to be resonant in extremely precise ways, and must be tuned exactly on pitch or will sound terrible and will not resonate. If any part of the instrument is not perfect, it will create dissonant overtones or even distortion which will make the overall sound dull, muddy, and unappealing in general. Handcrafted musical instruments are handcrafted for a reason, and their price reflects that. Some instruments can get away with being cheaply made without detracting from the sound too much, but this is absolutely not one of them. Sound waves don't just beam out of these instruments, the entire thing is vibrating at in an extremely precise and specific way. Even the slightest imperfection will disrupt that.

David I have my one since 2008 I didn't had the feeling I had to tune it. It never felt down and was never played to hard. What do you know about heat exposure to often, can it change the tuning in long term! I really love the way you play and educate us about music you are a great teacher!

iven simonetti I would say if it hasn't been tuned since 2008 it is in need for sure! They probably need to be retuned every 1-2 years to sound best, depending on how much it's played.

Hay Guys, I saw this instrument in the streets of Spain and than in Berlin and i knew i wanna play this instrument and give this magic to others. I did a lot of researches and found out that the hang from PanArts is not longer available and on ebay i just can find the Handpan made in Trinidad and Tobago. And I wonder if there are other sources i can finde one and maybe some one of u can give me a hint. My girlfriend and i started yesterday our project to ask 1000 people for 1€ to have the possebility to buy it. We decided that this is a nice way to collect the money for an instrument like this because it directly connects us to the people. Thanks for answers Mütze

These are mostly used in ethnic, psychedelic, downtempo and ambient genres, but you still need to buy more if you want to use them a lot, yeah. Wish I could have one. You can make similar ones from gas canisters by yourself, but it's a tad different instrument then, different resonance and perhaps it doesn't sound as rich.
