@@jmlkinc I was talking with an engineer this weekend about electric powered propulsion for a HG/PG. Back in the day it was possible with a 2St gas motor, but so loud, so heavy. One of the reasons I stopped HG was the amount of time it took to prep, chase, wait, closing sites, limited access, etc. It's called "Hang Waiting". For the weather, the right wind, etc. Launching solo with battery power would solve a lot of those logistical issues.

You're very welcome. My instructor was a very amazing and wise man. He told me there's two kinds of people that want to fly: Those who say "I've always wanted to do that." and those who say "Where do I sign up?" Just go out and find an instructor and take a lesson. Learning to fly is as much as, or more fun than "specking out" on a good day. That's when you get so high that the ground crew can't see you any more. You turn to a speck in the sky and eventually disappear.

I took my first lesson in 1990 when I was 18. after dreaming about it for 5 years (and getting a job) I took my 2-10 lesson when I was 23. By the time this video was shot, I had about 120 flights and 180hrs flight time at age 28. HG is one of those things that carries an Infinite ignorance with it; the more you know, the more you know you dont know.

@RichardBehiel I went to a hang gliding meet and watched and asked tons of questions. Bought some books, took some lessons, bought some gear, and Voila! 88 flights on the bunny hill and got my Hang 2 all in one summer. Take lessons first, then buy gear. The next usual question is: How much does it cost? A: around $100/day for lessons, and gear can be had for $500 to $15,000. All depends on how much you want to spend and what performance you want. The glider in this video was $1200 used.

Mark, the airspeed is about 18 to 50 mph in this video. 18 at stall, and 50 in a dive. The wind noise is the only thing you hear and, by the nature of flying, is always there.

@39cbell The 5yrs '90-95, I read 5 books on it, watched several instructional videos, studied aerodynamics, and went to several HG events. By 1995 I was fully prepared. My experience is not normal. It should take 10-15 days of training, and it's probably $175-200/day now. Flying a HG is actually pretty easy. The hard part is knowing when to launch and when/how to land. "It's better to be on the ground wishing you were flying instead of being in the sky wishing you were on the ground."
@soapbox9412 жыл бұрын
Just remember: It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground. Take it easy, don't rush, and enjoy every minute of the training.

Very cool story, thanks for sharing. There's lots of people that learn to fly by aero towing, I've actually never done it, but I'm planning on it this spring. My HG buddies bought a dragonfly to tow, so I have to get certified now. Ye-Haw! In our local area we call a wingover a "Wang" since it's not technically a wingover, I don't know if that's a universal term, but I know what you're talking about. Now you have to loop it! Good luck and I wish you good air.

I uploaded this in 2006, but shot it in 2000. It was shot on a crappy cannon camcorder that ran on tapes. It was digital, but would only shoot 60min on a tape. That's really the only reason I do all those dives and spirals at the end. I had to get down in time to get the landing on tape. The other 56 min of the video is just boring flying back and forth trying to get as high as possible without having a mid-air with a paraglider or another HG. It took me a week+ to edit the video on my 1998 computer. Each time I would make a revision late at night, I would hit "Render" and go to sleep and hope that it didn't error over night because it took 6-7hrs. I had to buy a "wide angle" lens for the camera, and I mounted it with drilled and bent metal scrap and a handful of bolts. I know, cry me a river. Adventure video today is a lot easier with GoPro and fast computers.

I started reading every book about HG and visited a couple HG meets. I ended up taking 3 lessons for $100/day, then bought my own gear. Back in 1995 I bought that glider for $1200. It's a 1988 Wills Wing Sport. harness for $50 and spent the rest of the summer at the dunes practicing. I did 88 flights off the training hill, then paid for 2 more lessons for $20/day (w/ my own gear) to get my Hang I&II ratings. Then I bought a cocoon harness ($370) parachute ($300) and a vario ($200) -Kevin

@JohnKeotes You can only fly over the sea for some minutes, because you will be slowly losing altitude. In order to fly for a long time you need to catch rising currents of air, which you will find at cliffs and slopes (depending on the wind) and some more places.

Actually, this is an example of Ridge Lift. There is smooth west air coming over the ocean and deflecting off the bluff. It's like riding a standing wave of air. If you see video of thermal lift the pilots are doing spiral turns to stay in the center of the lift, it's usually more in-land; like the desert where it's hot. -Kevin

@wind2jammer I think it's VNE? Velocity Never to Exceed. I think mine is 55 mph or knots? The glider just vibrates, shakes, and doesn't perform well. The anti-dive wires make 55+ pretty hard maintain anyway. Stall is about 18, Min sink 20, Max L/D 25.

I guess it is the falling... because I love the good views. If I feel secure, I am less afraid :P Like that harness, it looks pretty sturdy or whatever. I read you usually need a parachute too haha.. with some different features incase of a crash and it would not be tangled up. Mine would be the first, only because I do not live anywhere near one (closest one is Atlanta, i'm from alabama bleh). I'd love to go try it though. My parents are cheap so it may not work out until I save up myself.

And yes, you can go beyond 90 degrees. Most advanced gliders are fully capable of loops. There's really only 2 ways hang gliders have structural failures mid flight. 1. is a collision with another gilder. 2. is high-stress aerobatics such as a loop. Stalling mid-loop (zero airspeed) could drop the pilot onto the wing and shock-load the wing in a way it was not designed to endure. Flying a HG is easy and safe. It's the launch and landing that are the tricky parts.

@TellinTheTruth Actually it was just under an hour long flight. I've flown for 8+ hrs at this site on a good day. This day people were flying for 3-4hrs. My tape was only 60min. so I had to go and burn altitude to make sure I got the landing on film. I edited it down to fit the song; plus it gets pretty boring watching someone go back and forth, back and forth. "how do you get back up?" You fold up the glider and put it on a truck and drive back to the top.
