Tom, that plane is definitely worth rebuilding and a story on "fixes" will be hugely valuable to the generation that did not grow up putting sticks together themselves. So, in short, hated to see her go in but all is not lost.

I really enjoyed the narrative. Tips about flying at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and ballooning with throttle and flaps were very helpful. I've made so many mistakes flying that it's really nice to pick up a tip or two for free. Keep up the good work.

Very sorry to see this happen but like others I do really value your honesty, and yes I'm very keen to hear that engine. I myself have ended up feeling that flaps, or flaperons, are what you employ when there is NOT any wind to reduce your groundspeed. Anyway, good luck with the repairs. I think that your KZbin oeuvre is the best, by far, in the hobby.

I like to mix my flaps with the throttle. Flip a switch and as the throttle is moved to a lower setting the flaps begin to deploy. If trouble comes I just advance the throttle and the flaps retract . Simple and effective. I also have a separate flap switch with two positions.

Ouch. Good cure for a heart-breaking crash is a quick rebuild if possible. I can one-up you on things stupid;About twenty five years ago I crashed a Great Planes trainer on take off because I forgot to extend the radio antenna. Had it repaired and flying in about two days.

Great video. Sorry about the crash, though. I just bought one. I'm putting a RCGF 10cc on the nose and the radio's going to be Taranis 16 ch tray style. I know, I don't need all 16 channels. LOL There's one issue I found with the wings. I wonder if you experienced the same issue during your build. It appears that the right wing flap servo cover had the covering put on the back side of the hatch causing a 1.5 inch mismatch between the two hatches. The ailerons are correct. I'll be talking with Tower Hobbies about it tomorrow if they're not off for the holiday.
@flyingrcdotnet
@flyingrcdotnet 5 жыл бұрын
We did not have that issue. I expect that when you make so many of anything, there will be a mistake or two get through no matter what kind of quality control you have. This is the kind of thing that brings out the creativity in RC'rs.

Tom, I felt so sorry for you. I was watching the video and it was almost like watching a pre-view of things to come for my Valiant 10cc. I noticed the balloon when you selected full flaps, and wondered if you had programed in flap to aileron trim compensation? I didn't see anything in the Hanger 9 manual about it, however I am flying an E-Flite Valiant and that manual specifies 3% down elevator for take-off flaps and 5% for landing flaps. I thought that might be a bit small, but it works fine. The E-Flight flaps are not sloted, if that makes a difference. I am also flying a somewhat modified Timber with slotted flaps and leading edge slats. The factory settings for that are 9% and 13% respectively. I have just about doubled that, probably due to the modifications I made. In summary Tom, I think you only really made one mistake and that was doing a maiden on a gusty day. I am still trying to get the O.S. GG10 to idle down to where I think I can land it. I ordered a Sullivan Glo-Driver, maybe that will help.
@flyingrcdotnet
@flyingrcdotnet 6 жыл бұрын
My 10cc Valiant ballooned like that because it was just going a bit too fast when I hit the flap switch. It comes right back as the speed bleeds off. I might program some elevator into the flaps but will wait for a calm day to figure out what this Valiant wants.

Great vid!. Im building that plane I really liked the foami version. Just one question, in the video you said you turned it downwind, but did you turned at the end or it tipstalled?. Do you think it could have flew out by just adding throttle?. Thanks and congrats for the channel, great content!

Ive been waiting for this maiden video for a few weeks now, when I saw the title I didn't want to believe it... I just picked up a 10cc Valiant 4 Hitec D625 wide voltage servos for ELE,RUD, and AIL- throttle and flaps yet to be determined. Never felt 10cc gas would be quite enough for this plane for the type of flying I do, thinking about an ASP 90 glow swinging a wood 14x6. I really wanted to see you fly it on the NGH 9cc, I have the 17cc NGH but just too much for this airframe. Man!... hated to see that...but I know this is part of the hobby. This will be my first plane with flaps and was almost thinking about deleting them. Anyway hope the rebuild goes well... BTW what size prop were you running on the 9cc NGH? Thanks, big fan of your R/C BUILD AND FLIGHT VIDEOS...

Hey Tom, I have an 10cc valiant. Due to very limited choices in europe i put in an OS-GGT15 with 13x8 prop. Now after 12 flights the horizontal stabilizer broke, elevator on right side metal rod broke out completely. Mid flight it sounded realy scarry. Luckaly i landed safely. To your oppinion is the 15CC petrol engine just to much for this airframe? I have unlimited vertical even with undersized prop. Thanks for your simple short and informative vids.
@flyingrcdotnet
@flyingrcdotnet 3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you had a flutter which can easily be induced by too much speed for the airframe design. The 15 probably is too much engine but with throttle management you can stay out of the over speed stuff. Modern engines are developing more power than we sometimes expect so we need to think twice about "over engining" a plane!
@RyaReddy
@RyaReddy 3 жыл бұрын
@@flyingrcdotnet Just an update, bought and fitted an Saito FG11C engine. Runs and flies so smooth now. horizontal stabiliser was broken on both sides. Now repaired and installed carbon strips to prevent further flutter. Enjoyed couple of flights using 100ml in 20 minutes or so. Now the OS GGT is just a very expensive paperweight. Thnx and happy landings.

Tom, I built the Valiant 10cc like yours with same engine installed. That engine is a pain. How did you ever get it to run right? I been trying to get mine running right. The manual is hard to figure out. Would like to know the secret.
@flyingrcdotnet
@flyingrcdotnet 3 жыл бұрын
Small engines have always been a pain for me also. We spent some time tweaking the carb to find what it liked best. I think I will go electric in place of smaller gas engines, just my preference to get away from the tuning issues.

I'm putting one of these together now. I'm to the point of mounting a 15cc EVO engine and was wondering what type of battery and switch set-up are you using for your 10cc Valiant? MY LHS suggested using NiMh batteries but I've heard its better to go with LiFe batteries. What's your opinion? Thanks
@flyingrcdotnet
@flyingrcdotnet 6 жыл бұрын
I used a simple Spektrum 3 wire switch controlling a 7.4V, 5000mAh LiPo pack. It probably doesn't need 5000mAh but I use them a lot so have them laying there. I know people will kick about the LiPo battery but I buy good quality packs (Glacier brand from Anderson RC, NC) and use a good charger and slow charge rates. Never had an issue.
