Thank you for this comprehensive tutorial; I particularly enjoyed the part where you show how to draw a line where you’ll put the metal wedge that you’re gonna get next time you’re at the hardware store. Seriously, made me laugh out loud. It’s totally fine.

Found an old small sledge head that was my late fathers. Can't wait to make new handle. Your style and presentation is both comprehensive & easy to follow. Thank you!

Good little tutorial Stu. Motivates me to have a re-handling day sometime soon, must be half a dozen tools around the barn that could use the treatment!👍🏻

This is exactly what I was looking for. I have a couple of sledgehammers, one 8lb and one 6lb, and a couple of handles that I broke on splitting wedges from splitting wood. I was hoping to just cut the handles own past the split parts and reuse the handles. Thanks.

When u say @ end of video, about the metal wedge, do u mean u would add a metal wedge perpendicular IN ADDITION to the wood wedge, or just a metal wedge and forget about the wood one. My dad calls this a drilling hammer…

Hi Carl, thanks for the comment. Yes I added a metal stepped wedge perpendicular to the wooden wedge. Cheers.

I'm currently rehandling a ball peen. Which hole is the top of the hammer head? Big or small? There is no previous handle in it for me to reference from.
@TokyoCraftsman
@TokyoCraftsman 4 жыл бұрын
The wider end of the hole goes on top. When you fit the handle make sure the bottom of the hammer eye fits tight, then you wedge the top part of the handle where it comes through the head, leave maybe 1/4" or 6mm proud. When you wedge the handle the wood will flare out into the larger hole in the top of the head of the hammer helping to keep the handle in place, but you must make sure that the handle cannot be pushed down the handle shaft. This is why the handle will often have a swell right below the head of the hammer. I hope that makes sense.
