If i remember right, those plugs you have to have both blades go in at exactly the same time for them to let you push it in. Being outdoors it may have gotten some dirt in it. Contact cleaner may have loosened it up.

Yes the blades definitely have to go in at the same time. From playing with it, seems like they push in slightly then release downward. Hopefully the contact cleaner took care of it. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment buddy!

Yeah, that's actually the entire _purpose_ of them to begin with. They are designed specifically _to prevent opening_ if somebody (like a child) decides to just stick something like a screwdriver in the outlet. They are only supposed to open if an actual plug is inserted, which presses on both shutters at the same time, which is what is supposed to release the mechanism and let them slide open.

@@foogod4237 that is correct. 👍

Thanks Pete! I’m guessing there must be a spring mechanism inside that maybe goofed off on me. I still have the cord siting in there. If it is still bad I might put some three in 1 in there and if that doesn’t work I’ll crack the whole thing open just to get an idea of how the internals look for that child safety mechanism. I’m sure you have some experience with those. Thanks for watching Pete! And if you have any advice to offer towards the process I did it’s more then welcome 🤜🤛

I wouldn't recommend the 3 in 1, not sure if that's conductive and could burn.
@themaintenanceman1
@themaintenanceman1 Жыл бұрын
@@bwselectronic thanks for that. I am very hesitant to use that in there. I’ll see how it is tomorrow. Do you have any other suggestions for lubrication of that spring or any other ideas? Much appreciated

@@themaintenanceman1 the contact cleaner is all I can think of. Those safety outlets can be finicky. They do do a good job at keeping kids from sticking things in the outlets though

I'm jealous of you guys back east with your basements. Here on the west coast we're lucky if we have a crawlspace big enough to crawl in! How do you like those Kobalt screwdrivers, are they insulated?
@themaintenanceman1

Idk what I would do without a basement but you do have the better weather out there. I knew a kid once who was in his 20’s and had never seen a real basement. My mind was blown lol. The kobalt an are actually very nice. And yes they are insulated. Thanks for watching buddy!

*You should never spray WD-40 into an electrical outlet.* WD-40 is highly flammable, which means that in combination with any sparks that might happen when inserting or removing plugs, or too much heat from excessive electrical current, etc, the residue could actually cause the outlet to spontaneously catch on fire during use (which can then melt the plastic, causing the internal wiring to come together, leading to an even bigger fire). Unfortunately, that outlet is now a fire hazard (and probably always will be from now on) and you really shouldn't try to use it for anything anymore. If you need to do this sort of thing in future, I would recommend finding a spray lubricant which is explicitly non-conductive and non-flammable (such as something silicone-based) and designed for use on electrical components. Various companies do actually make such products exactly for this sort of application.

Thanks for the comment. It’s not wd-40 though it’s just wd-40’s brand Contact cleaner which this is the perfect situation for it to be used in. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
