In the previous video I dismantled the gear box (lower unit) of the Hangkai 2 Stroke 3 5 HP Outboard Motor and I did some cleaning including flushing the gear box, new gear oil was topped up.

In this final part I removed the housing of the Hangkai 2 Stroke 3 5 HP Outboard Motor and I dismantled certain parts, the housing was washed clean with dish detergent and rinse with clean tap water. The Air filter was removed and cleaned, due to the jerking occurred on my last trip I decided to check on the spark plug, a bit dense and carbon was built up on the spark plug, it was replaced with a new one which I bought in the later day.
Initial thought was to have the Carburetor stripped and serviced, when I opened up the Air Filter housing I found that it is very clean, probably due to low usage, I did some minor cleaning with a cotton bud. The Water Cooling System was checked and I used a vacuum cleaner to suck out any fine sand that mind trapped inside.
Lastly the whole engine was vacuum clean and a wet cloth was used to wipe clean the external.
Took my Intex Seahawk II Inflatable Boat and this Hangkai 2 Stroke 3 5 HP Outboard Motor that was just serviced to Kampung Mawar at Malaysia to try out the performance and fishing, the result? Stay tuned for the next video!

Amazing in depth video!!! Thank you so much for this. I just got my motor in the mail today. What do you recommend to do before I even turn it on? You should definitely do a video for first time inspection of the motor, what to look for, and how to set it up for first time owners like myself. I'm part of a Facebook group that modifies and talks about the Intex Excursion 5 inflatable boat and some of us have this motor. Thanks for the support, glad to hear you like it. I would recommend you to have the lower unit gear oil replaced before you crank it up, the factory gear oil is not that good and it might have been store in the warehouse for god knows how long. When I did my first servicing after a few run, the color of the gear oil is in chocolate color. I will see if I can find some times to do an introduction video on this Hangkai Outboard, recently I was a bit busy with other commitments. NorthernHarecoreisherman

I was thinking about getting one of these but have been having second thoughts because of all the complaints about them. I was just wondering how it's been holding up, how fast it runs through a tank of gas and if it has enough power to go upstream on rivers or if it just chugs along at a walking pace.

Ben Legere No dout about it that this Hangkai had a lot's of complaints under it's belt, I did encounter some issues like jerking and the latest was the propeller not spinning. For that kind of price tag (I bought it at S$280) no other brand of outboard motor came close to it, so I guess I can still bear with those small issues. The Hangkai is quite strong if you ask me, but bear in mind that I am using a lightweight inflatable boat, the Intex Seahawk II. Not sure what kind of boat you are using, but for upstream on river I am afraid it might not perform as well as others. The fuel consumption is quite low, the inner fuel tank which's 1.5L can easily cover some 5km. I only use it on the sea and I wasn't quite sure how well it can perform in the river.

Excellent,,, keep up the good work... I'm going to start the maintenance on my engine I've seen some worried performance on my last trip.. Whenever I accelerate it doesn't move and some burning smell comes out... Any recommendations?

TheHabibalby In fact I encountered the same problem, the propeller just wouldn't move no matter how I accelerate, no burning smell from my engine though. I sent to a workshop but I guessed my engine was too small for them to notice and it was not being touch for 3 weeks. I brought it back and was thinking of stripping off the engine to see if I can do something to it. Will see if I can make a video of dismantling it.

Hey there friend, after years i bumped in to your channel to see how it goes.. You still got your Hangkai?? Mine runs like a dream, i just fired it up.. It started after 4th pull.. Amazing after storage for so long.. I think it was like 3 years i had it stored now.. I am thinking about installing an air filter to reduce some of that noise and i think it would be a good thing for the engines health too.. What's your thought on that?? Engine is lovely it runs on sea, on lakes, on rivers.. It is just so loud i had to get a trolling motor.. After i got that 56lbs trolling motor i must say im happy i have Hangkai.. It weighs like what 5 kg?? And it is a powerful engine 3.5hp 10 times stronger then 56 lbs.. My 56 lbs engine is big, long shaft, and much heavier to carry then hangkai.. It is smaller tho.. But put a 100AH battery on top of that and you have a monster to carry around .. I thaught these trolling motors were light like plastic.. I was wrong.. If it wasent for the noise i would send back my trolling motor and keep using only Hangkai.. That noise level must be modded somehow.. it is waaayyy too loud.. Got any ideas?

Thanks for tuning in, it's been quite a while since I last updated this channel, been busy with works. Anywway, my Hangkai is dead! The last time I checked on it, found that very high chance the Auto Clutch has worn out. I haven't got the part ordered and since then the Hangkai was kept on the shelf. As for the noise, I can't agree more with you that it is loud. Not sure how to add on the air filter to reduce the noise but I would love to get an update from you if you decided to get your hands dirty.

I took the carb off to get a better look at the throttle linkage and a very small black rod with a spring attached drop out of somewhere and I have no idea where it goes, does anyone else know, cant even find a pic of it anywhere

+FOAM KING - RC Creations For the Gear Oil I would recommend it to be replaced after 10 hours running, I mean if you are using the same type of small engine like mine, it didn't cost much on the gear oil. The internal cleaning is best to be done after every trip. My drive shaft jammed on my last trip and it was caused by some corrosion near the water impeller housing. Flushed the outboard with clean water after every saltwater trip to prevent damage. I have a upcoming video which I repaired the jammed drive shaft, I did the engine flushing as well.

Oh I see, I did make a Fuel Refilling gadget for it. Using the squeeze bulb fuel pump with two fuel pipes connected. ok, I see what I can do for that one.

I couldn't afford doing this full time, at least not yet.) hope you can understand, thanks. The Hangkai was bought some to years ago and I got it from the Chinese Online Store Aliexpress. The last time I check they are still selling this model as well as the newer model which is around USD$350. There's 4 stroke engine versus mine of 2 stroke engine, price will be higher but I would suggest you go for the 4 stroke engine as it's more efficient and less hassle as you do not require to make the gasoline mixture. +Zach Hoyt Sorry for late reply. I always used 95 octane with the 30:1 ratio on the 2T mixture. The gap call I wasn't sure, I didn't went to that detail and I just tighten it. I know it's not appropriate but the manual don't have the figure and I just did it like what I done to my car's spark plugs. : )

My 3.5 was "jerking" "bogging down" "dying after 10 minutes or so of running. The problem...the air vent in the fuel tank was not designed properly. The vent hole had a rubber "flapper" that I guess was to vent and avoid fuel loss. It didn't work. I pulled it out and the motor has run flawlessly ever since then. Further, upon receipt, the carburetor was NOT adjusted at all. I couldn't get it to start or run until I adjusted the one screw carb adjustment. Runs just fine now.

Abouth third time i use my motor and i filled with fuel second time. After ten minutes of running, i hear pop noises and then i stop and motor shuts off. Then i cant start it again. Tried letting it cool but wont start.. whyd it make pop noise and how can i fix it?

greato80 I am not sure why there's a "Pop" sound, could it due to the fuel mixture? Maybe you can try making the mixture slightly lower, instead of 30/1 maybe 25/1?

Bill Jerald I had been using this small outboard for about a year, I didn't really record the hours used, should be around 20 hours. So far it's working fine until recently it was jerking quite a bit and on my last trip the propeller just stop spinning, it was sent to a workshop but the mechanic couldn't figure out what is wrong. I am going over to the workshop later to find out more, hopefully nothing serious.

You need to dismantle the whole lower unit and the drive shaft from the engine, there is a housing which has the impeller inside, just remove it and replace with the new one. I didn't have a video on that part, sorry!

I have the same motor and when I have it at full throttle once it get warmed up it does that jerking motion and bog downs almost like it wants to die and then goes right back to full throttle. Do you have any idea what causes this problem?

I faced the same problem and eventually it stop working, I found out that the shaft was corroded and jammed. The Auto Clutch must have worn out, you can get the part from aliexpress.com

I have same problem with my new hangkai..but read on a comment that it needs to be broken in slowly on lower speed for few hours. Cant just start up and go low to high. So maybe run yours in a barrell or plastic tub of water awhile on low to mid gear to break in. Again, its just from a comment i read about the same kind of problem..makes sense to me tho. Im gonna try it.

JARED-----Notice the air bubbles in your fuel line----it is not SNUG onto the motor and causes it to run badly. You have to thicken up the metal tubes on top of the carburetor by using JB Weld smeared onto a small piece of paper towel. A couple of wraps will make those tubes fit tight. You need to put it up on a bench and take a "surgical" approach to this......takes a couple of minutes, really, and let the JB Weld cure for a day. All of my Hangkais have this problem, but run well, otherwise......Marty the Designer
