First, congrats for the amazing video. Loved it! Apart from the cool things you people commented already, Hangzhou is also the best city in China for cycling as a relevant and serious alternative to cars (among the 30 best cities for urban cycling in the world). See why, my friends: - More than 20% of population rides a bicycle at some point of their daily activity. For a 12M metropolis, well, that's pretty nice... - A bigger bike-sharing network than capitals like Paris or London (including probably the most advanced and convenient digital system in the world). - With 15+ years, was the first bikesharing net to be implemented in China. It's the collaboration between public and private smart planning and investment what has set a standard in this class of projects in the world. - As you can see in the video: individual, well separated infraestructure for cycle lanes to guarantee everyone that chooses cycling through the city as a preference feels secure. Not just painting lines on the side of roads (yeah, Shanghai, I'm talking about you). Sometimes you separate it with trees, sometimes with big floral/bushes/concrete lines, in Hangzhou it's with fences. All of them are good options, but whatever you use, please USE IT, use a strong structure to separate bike lanes from the road! So Hangzhou choice of fences absolutely makes the point of preventing car users from sensing the city is theirs and cyclists are just intruders, mosquitoes close to their way. - Independent traffic lights and signaling for cyclists. - Cycle lanes are wide, so spacious. One would think this is not that important but I've rode bike lanes in many European cities and now I'd say a wide one-directional lane is the most comfortable short distance mobility option humanity has to offer, it really is a stress killer. Some of these paths in Hangzhou look so inviting to ride just because of that. Another point for you, Hangzhou! - More than 5,000 cycling services parking points around the city, with arranged facilities for parking nearby if no lots are left. - A political drive for planning lanes particularly around waterways and green areas, to make cycling not only a transport alternative but a leisure activity as well. For instance, urban cycling routes around West Lake are some of the most beautiful in China. Wish one day I can stroll around there... - Would say sharing cycling lanes, despite being only with little, low capacity motorbikes or non-motorised vehicles is a bad idea , even if you limit the speed at 30km, because first thing in those lanes shoud be cyclists' comfort. But seems like motorists respect this limit, at least from what I see on the video. They were really slow! (as it should be haha) and although I still think it's not an ideal option; separate controlled shared lanes still way better than doing nothing or, as I said, those road side accident-prone painted lanes that are a hell for any cyclist. The point of ecologic mobility politics is to make people see an alternative to cars is not only possible but realistic and useful, and those fenced lanes are a good idea. Now, what can Hangzhou do better regarding cycling? (It's just from this and a dozen of other Hangzhou street videos and some Baidu and Open maps navegating that I'm sensing this, so of course I can be completely wrong and I invite anyone who may know the city to correct me): - The core of the city shows a well developed separate infraestracture but seems like at the other side of Qiantang river, I'm talking about Binjiang and Xiaoshan districts, the thing changes dramatically and little to no dedicated infraestructure has been built in comparison. Maybe the network could cover much more than what it already does. - Another aspect that proves a city is growing a cycling culture inside is how implicated businesses, supermarkets, delivery platforms are with it: different cargo bikes models, facilities for familiy bikes at malls, etc. When companies of all types use cycling in their normal activity they are leading the way for people to understand a change has to be made in mobility. I haven't seen any of this in this city, just one or two cargobikes. You're in the way, Hangzhou, so need to keep improving! - Haven't seen many people riding their own bicycles either. But given that the bike services are sooo big in this city, can't get to form a conclusive opinion on whether this is just because they don't see owning a bike as an interesting idea having such shared system at use or if they wouldn't use bikes at all if they still had the nice lanes network but not the huge shared platforms. Obviously there's always a lot to improve but the cycling system in Hangzhou puts more important cities like Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou to shame on this matter and only adds up to how appealing this place is. Now all around, apart from this topic, I don't know what Hangzhou did Marco Polo see 700 years ago to feel so overwhelmed by its beauty, elegance, commercial richness and all, but f**k has the future served to his words... One of the most spectacular sites I've ever seen with no doubt.

From the point of view of an observer who comes from the "Western Hemisphere" where China is presented as a country where the citizens are denied everything that seems worth living in, one can only look in amazement at how happy, free and apparently quite worth living the life of the Chinese is, at least in the metropolises appears! All I can say, Chinese, is that you can be proud of your country and of your leadership, even if there are certainly points of criticism and improvements. In countries that like to criticize your government like a high school teacher, they probably only do so out of stupid ignorance of how far you have come in the meantime. Your mix of bread and butter and stick seems to work much better for the majority of the population than in countries that have taken up the cause of maximum freedom for every citizen and are becoming entangled in increasingly inefficient processes. You Chinese walk on the better path.
