We spoke in English for the first 20 minutes, but then her phone rang, and she began speaking in her native language. I was stunned-I could understand about 60% of the conversation. This video brought back that same feeling of surprise and connection. As Turks, our ancestors once lived close to China (during the Göktürk and Hun Empires etc), but most of us migrated to other parts of the world in the 4th century. Despite this long separation, I still see striking similarities in the foods, language and cultures of the Uyghur people. It’s a makes me feel weird, happy and sad at the same time. Of all your videos this is my favourite. Stories of the old Asian trading routes have fascinated me all my life (I'm almost as ancient!) and your stories/videos have covered many of many of them. Xinjiang was undoubtedly one of the northern east/west routes. The hustle and bustle of life in Kashgar for example, is how I imagine life has gone on though these regions for many hundreds of years, except that instead of scooters transport was probably the Bactrian Camel. The way you interact with people and get them to open up to you is inspirational. I'm really looking forward to your journey as you travel west towards Tajikstan (and the Tianshan mountains), the corridor to Uzbek and Turkman(istan). A wonderful video!

Another beautiful video. Its really nice to see different cultures and traditions in this part of Central Asia. This took me back when I was in UAE on how they cook naan bread. It tasted good and one piece of this bread could make you full.😊

Welcome back Yan after your short , well earned break . You see , people know a class act when they see one in you ,by inviting you to their home , serving food and drinks and presenting gifts . It's so obvious that you have the class and flair of a Queen and people do notice these traits very quickly . Common decency and cordiality costs nothing and you have these assets in abundance . I'm chuffed to bits you are back on your travels for us admirers again and may I wish you good times ahead and God speed ...from Scotland ,take good care .🎉🎉

You wouldn't imagine the propaganda we hear in the West about this region. Primitive, impoverished, the people in concentration camps. Thank you for showing the truth. I look forward to more videos. Great work Yan.

West China is definitely still impoverished come on, the country has a really big income inequality problem. But yes there is undoubtedly a narrative from Western mainstream media to talk about Uyghur China to extreme levels. From the same narrative/goal as the ones who downplay Israel's current genocide and sometimes even shift the blame to hamas and sometimes even to regular Palestinians and uh university students out west...
