Exhibiting an understated style that became his trademark, Hank Aaron became the all-time home-run champion via one of the most consistent offensive careers in baseball history, with 3,771 hits. In addition to his 755 home runs, he also set Major League records for total bases, extra-base hits and RBIs. Aaron was the 1957 National League MVP, won three Gold Gloves for his play in right field and was named to a record 25 All-Star squads.

I watched this on the day Henry Aaron died but I was able to meet him in 1974. His speech perfectly embodied who he was and for all he suffered, not a trace of bitterness was heard in that speech.

Henry I'm fortunate to have grown up during your era. Mr. Aaron paved the way for many African- American ballplayers here in Detroit. Larry Doby, Jake Wood, Gates Brown and Willie Horton to name a few.

Henry's birthday was Feb. 5th...one day ahead of the Babe's. Also, Henry also tied Willie McCovey for the NL home run title. Each wore #44. Each hit 44. And I used to go to Shea Stadium specifically to watch both guys as a kid.
