Apu is a self made immigrant that owns a small business and is one of the nicest people in Springfield. What a horrible depiction of Indian people.

That's what I got from it. He's an outsider to the moronic town of Springfield and he makes them look even more moronic and rips the s#!t out of those people that know or care less about the U.S.A. e.g. applying for citizenship he begins to answer what caused the Civil War and explains very detailed history of the period as the examiner gets impatient and advises," Just answer: Slavery." Apu: "Slavery it is, sir!"

I respect his decision....I knew a few Indian kids who were a minority in school get bullied so bad. Whenever they would speak the white guys would just mock there accent by speaking like Apu. They would say there Dad had a kwik e mart, when in fact he was a shop owner. They would throw stones at the shop window after school....pretty messed up. Hank knows his stereotyping of Apu contributed to racist bullying of south Asian kids at school. Apu represents the fuel for bullys to use to those Indian kids. Good on Hank to drop the character.

Why is Apu character offensive? A hard working immigrant who was an engineer in the past but decided to open a convenient store, working 18 hrs a day, putting up with idiots like Homer and Snake. From my experience (not so much now a days, because there is more representation of ethnic minorities in films and TV e.g. Crazy Rich Asians, Black Panther, Masters of None...but still not enough) in Britain, a lot of people use it as an excuse to be racist. Its funny that this the only stereotype that they went after in the show. Lou is also played by Azaria and he sounds like the stereotypical "black" american. But that isn't offensive? i would say he was treated with the same amount of respect as any other stereotyped character on the show, wether it was a white blue collar sterotype, a rich white socialite stereotype, a white southern stereotype or stereotypes of non American cultures. I think the main difference was that his huge popularity made him often used in harasment and bullying. That and he was voiced by a white guy even though many white people still voice characters that arent white on popular shows and in popular movies. I feel like this is very complicated because half my family is Mexican and I love mexploitation movies. Maybe directors like Robert Rodriguez gets a "pass" just like how blaxploitation movies were largely driven and supported by the black community(less so now) but I also love satire of America as an American. Even as a kid watching the Triplets of Belleville, the scene in New York was one of my favorite scenes. This old channel I use is based around GTA which I love because of the American stereotypes and the satire of Amercan culture from a European perspective. I also enjoy the amazing actor James Hong who played characters that are still widely praised but were also blatantly racist stereotypes. Just how they drew his character in Mulan was racist, I feel. I still love that actor and his characters though. I think Hank Azaria is smart and made a good decision as a performer to change his performance to better fit a wider audience. That being said, I also respect a few smart comedians that refuse to change their style of comedy. I dont think Norm Macdonald was offensive but he made jokes about racism, sexism, homosexuality and disabilities so I understand not wanting to hear it. Im glad that he never changed his style even though our culture changed over the decades and his platform shrinked because of it. It's really really complicated.

Indians are largely underrepresented in media so people take apu as a broad gross representation of Indian people. Nobody sees homer or burns or mod as representative of white people because white people are the status quo. I went to middle school and high school with three Indian kids. They constantly had Apu jokes thrown in their face. By white kids. And not in a good way. It was constant. One of them asked my friend, a white girl to prom. She was a horrible person but she said no and then told everyone that Apu asked her out. White people are writing Apu jokes. A white dude is doing the voice. And white people are telling Indian people to have thicker skin

Everyone is a Stereotype. I'm actually Australian and i've never been offended with the show cause i've always known it's a cartoon and before there was a Family Guy, American Dad, Rick and Morty, South Park, there was The Simpsons. Which was very controversial in the 90's. Even when they made fun of Australia I just laughed. Now it's offensive? Are you for real. Don't have a cow man!

i i It's obvious you're upset by this comment and i'm sorry. Just consider this Groundskeeper Willie is Scottish. He is the only Scottish representation on the show and yet no one seems to have a problem with it. I also feel the bullying is not right and some of it may be because of The Simpsons but I don't believe it is the sole reason. Once again it is cartoon. If people are offended by a caricature then just don't watch it. As for the buliies just ignore them. Also Apu is doing quite well for himself. Most Indians i've talked to here in Australia have 2 to 3 jobs. Apu has one job, has a cool car, he lives in a 2 storey house, he can provide income for his wife and 8 kids. He's doing quite well for someone who isn't considered royalty.

i i You and all the other sjw libtards try to find something offensive in everything. This person was right, every character on the show is a stereotype in some way. If south asians were bullied I can guarantee you it’s not because of some secondary character on an animated series. Some of the stereotypes of Apu are common among real life Indians and other south Asians. It’s a common stereotype that an Indian male will own or work in a convenience store, and that’s because a lot of them do. Look up the Indian comedian Russell Peters. He acknowledges the truths in a lot of these stereotypes and makes jokes about them.

An immigrant here from Eastern Africa who is often times mistaken for being Indian. Came to the grand Ol' U.S. at age eight. I don't know the language. Went to a ghetto school where the teachers were sincere but the students were simply horrible. I didn't learn much from that elementary school I was at, so what I would do after school was dismissed is head over to my TV, turn it on and watch the Simpsons and Dragon Ball Z with close caption on. I would follow the dialogue and try to associate the text words to it. That is what helped me learn English! Not school. Not anything else. To this day, I watch the Simpsons and love it to death (although the real death began about some 18 seasons ago when it started to piss on its golden age :,( I love Apu, and I think Hank is a humble dude who has done an amazing job of voice acting the character. I will admit that I'm a liberal, but I have been eerily fighting lately against the same group of people who purport to be helping somebody of my skin complexion and 'oppressed experience.' Please don't speak for me. Because my experience has been nothing but positive with the Apu character, and I want to thank Hank for giving platform to someone who is of a similar complexion. In short, I am incredibly appreciative of all that the Simpsons has done for me and I genuinely ask any type of liberalism force that tries to re-define what it has been for millions of people over the years, to kindly go fuck yourself. Apu is a great character and the show has personally been for me an incredibly meaningful and positively impactful cartoon series!

I’m a liberal and I agree with you. Authoritarian, self-righteous liberals reflect badly on all of us. They may mean well, but they are choosing to fight the wrong battles. When the character was created, he was revolutionary, because there were very few Indian characters on television. Apu has a lot of great qualities - he’s a protagonist. I think he should be celebrated, instead of reviled. I absolutely despise when people try to inflict their politics on art. Art shouldn’t have to make everyone feel 100% comfortable. Even if Apu was an antagonist, The Simpson’s is a work of art. Artists should not be forced to change their vision just because some people don’t get it, or wish it was different, or don’t feel 100% happy and comfortable with the way something is portrayed. All humour, and all art, deals with aspects of society that some people will, inevitably, find uncomfortable. Think about stand-up comedians - the funniest ones deal with taboo subjects. Uncomfortable truisms are often funny. I’ve had comedians make fun of me for being blonde, for being American, for being white, and so on, and I never get offended, even though they’ve done it using American/blonde/white stereotypes. I know that those stereotypes don’t describe me, and I also know that the comedians don’t think that all, or even most blondes/Americans fit those stereotypes. But then, I am able to laugh at myself - I quite enjoy it, in fact. I think it’s something that everyone should learn to do. If people want a different Indian-American cartoon character on television, they can make their own art, their own show, in which the characters conform to their own empty, meaningless rules. I’ve noticed that regressive leftists have been trying to change a lot of art recently, so that it conforms with their ideals. This is not only wrong, it is both extremely worrying, and authoritarian. Art should be left alone, to be admired or reviled by the viewer, and left open to interpretation, both positive and negative. The onus should not be on the artists to conform to someone else’s vision, nor should artists have to maintain the impossible standard of pleasing all people, all of the time. Art should not have to be politically correct, and the best art often isn’t. Authoritarianism is increasing on both the right and left, albeit, in different ways. This really worries me, because ALL authoritarianism is regressive, and an impediment to creativity, empathy, and human progress...regardless of which side it’s on.

I'm triggered that people are triggered by Apu. Do people not understand comedy? Look at all of the best comedians of the past 60 years. They all have race related jokes in their routine. Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Lenny Bruce, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle and many many more all used humor that involved race. That's why these comedians (especially Richard Pryor) really broke the barrier and people of any ethnicity could have a laugh. So Aziz Ansari makes fun of Indian stereotypes 50% of his performance and people love him, what makes the Simpsons having ONE Indian character on their show any worse. It's ridiculous, have a laugh people and enjoy life.

From here on out they should hire real swedes to write new and accurate dialogue and make him seem like a real swede, completely ruining the simplicity and charm of the original character and in turn making him completely unfunny, but at-least people like me wont be offended anymore... See how shit everything becomes with this kind of mentality? Stop being offended by absolutely everything people, grow a thicker skin.

I found this brilliant summary of Apu: Apu teaches that tolerance toward other faiths and ways of life is important. He is vegan, Hindu, he is a hard working family man raising 8 children the best he can. He provides for his lovely wife whom he has not oppressed and out under his thumb. We all know he will listen to her wisdom if she offers it. He goes to great lengths often, to help his community. He is the best citizen that town ever had and that was made evident in that beautiful and hilarious episode about proposition 24. He spoke about the pain of the pressure to forsake his heritage and in the end it was his dedication which led to his citizenship. He remained true to his heritage ever after and continued to share moral lessons to all the town about many different things. He is or was the ONLY "problematic" character that painted the illegal immigrant, immigrant, and immigrated citizen, as the type of person you want in your community. APU must not be retired off, if he goes, the whole show must go along with all re-runs permanently! America is an insane place, full of insane people. Apu is not one of them. The Simpsons is finished if they succumb to to this madness!

As a child of a Indian/Scottish father, and knowing the culture. The Indo-Americans have to first give up their cast system before they judge a fictional character from the Simpsons. If they had a similar show as the Simpsons they will make fun of the Anglo Americans, and all other Americans.

A better idea would be to kill the show entirely. It has been a soulless husk for a long, long time.

If The Simpsons didn't already go into Apu's backstory, and reveal that he is someone that has a doctorate in computer science, that he essentially settled for a job at the Kwik-E-Mart and made his own choices for his own reasons... sure, I could understand being offended. However, all those things happened, and more. Apu is one of the more developed side characters in The Simpsons, so people that get offended that he's "stereotypical" are the same people that give knee-jerk reactions to something they don't like. Apparently doing any bit of research, or even taking 3 minutes to read into a situation beyond what's been spoon-fed to you is asking too much these days.

I can understand children being made fun of at that time for being indian because of the character so it is good to hear that people want to make responsible tv shows but i think in today's time, people are are more aware and know that not every indian sounds like apu. I also dont think apu's accent was exagerated. alot of indians have that accent in india, it is nothing to be offended about. if a new indian character was introduced, maybe they could characterize him in a way that represents other types of indians

So when people want Apu to be dubbed by Indian voice actor.. does that mean that all voice actors should cut their 5ft finger off? You know its really not ok when a voice actor has a 5 fingers and they are voice acting a character that has only 4 fingers.

While Apu is an over the top caricature of an Indian American man, he's also arguably the best adjusted character on The Simpsons. He's a successful small business owner, loving husband, and father to eight brilliant children. This irony is made explicit many times in the show. Satire is dead.

The people getting offended by Apu aren't Indian either. This is more fabricated outrage by white leftists who want to create another marginalized group that they can champion for ballots. It is cultural marxism. It is tribalism. It is divide and conquer. What we see as one absurd little event, the fake offense over a cartoon character is, in reality, one aspect of a much larger campaign to bring down a country. Great nations don't fall from military conquest, they fall from internal strife, and there is no better way to create internal strife than to break the people down into little tribes who all believe they are being oppressed by the other tribes, and then get the people to turn on each other. This is how the Roman Empire fell, and it is how the United States of America will fall.

I'm going to quote Fahrenheit 451 here, because I'm getting sick of the sanitization of media content that does not treat every demographic with kid-gloves. "The people in this book, this play, this TV serial are not meant to represent any actual painters, cartographers, mechanics anywhere. The bigger your market, Montag, the less you handle controversy, remember that!" Can we stop censoring content just because it makes people feel uneasy? It is getting ridiculous. The Simpsons is not meant to represent the real world. That is how one week they can have Mr Burns getting shot by Maggie, but another week acting as if he was never shot by the third Simpsons child. That is how they can make the Halloween episodes, but have those stories be of no consequence to any other episode. And that is the reality of The Simpsons. Each Simpsons episode is in itself a separate universe, which makes the series as a whole unrepresentative of reality. Granted there are times when in one episode they will refer to something that occurred in a previous episode, but those moments are little more than self-satirization through reflection on the series as a whole. Those are moments that poke fun at the fact there is no consistency between episodes; that there is no canon. So to pick apart a particular Simpsons character for misrepresenting a particular demographic, belies the fact The Simpsons as a whole is unrepresentative of the real world. Is Apu a stereotype? Yes. Undoubtedly. But he is a stereotype because he is parodying that stereotype. If there is any problem in terms of an under-representation or misrepresentation of Indians and other South Asians in American media, then the focus should be on casting more South Asians in roles that are not stereotypical. So with respect to the beloved Simpsons character, people need to calm down.
