My Dad had a country/ blues band where I grew up In Mississippi near Memphis, Tn. After my Mother died when I was a young Child my Dad would sit on our front porch in his rocking chair, play his guitar and sing this song repeatedly with tears falling.🥲❤️

This is the inspiration for Alan Jackson’s MIDNIGHT IN MONTGOMERY. Elvis once said it was the saddest song he had ever heard.Hank was a poet at heart. It is hard to believe that his recording career was only 6 years.

Who hasnt felt every word in this song? There is -lonely-alone..then LONESOME! What an aweful feeling. Hank lets us feel just how sad it is. He lived it like nobody! The steady beat and matching vocal steadiness have always reminded me of teardrops silently sliding down your face and you don't even realize you are crying. Your point about the celestial elements suggests to me all the things going on inside you that are silent to the outside viewer. Kinda like being surrounded by people and feeling extremely alone. Amazing how sad songs sometime make us feel less alone.

I heard a reactor comment recently that so much of country music and Hank’s especially, follow the structure of the songs in the Baptist Hymnal almost perfectly. And when I thought about it, I realized he was right. Hank got his early indoctrination into music in the small town southern churches. His mother played the organ in one of those churches and was a pretty fair singer herself according to people who knew them back then. He never finished high school, so his command of the English language and his mastery of poetry constructs is amazing to me. And yes, he used simple everyday language but what he created with it was exceptional. . I think he was a master poet whose genius was only revealed in his music.

Wow that's a great song. Good reaction. Everybody knows about lonesome. The greatness of this song is in the descriptive lyrics and Hanks soul. I can hear the midnight train in his vocals. I can see the shooting star and the moon in a cloudy purple sky.....who describes the sky as purple....hey I can see it. The lyrics the moan in Hanks voice, even the moon left me. This song rocks. 10!

Like attacking the legacy of George Washington, music journalist Chet Flippo and Kentucky historian W. Lynn Nickell have each claimed the song was actually written by Paul Gilley, a young, unknown Kentucky song writer. Williams was alleged to have bought the publishing rights and the right to claim authorship to this song, along with several other Hank Williams hits. Gilley drown at age 27. The music historians claim Gilley's mother was so distraught was with her son's sudden and tragic death that she burned all of his papers and any documentation which could have proven the claim of authorship to the collection. Regardless, it is one of the greatest songs ever written.

Have you watched these videos before? Maybe you don’t realize that the host is required by U tube to alter. The video. In some way, because of copyright laws. Otherwise they will block the video. Since these are reaction videos, the host interrupt the vídeo to reject to. it. I admit that Omer reactors do a poor job of it. I know of one. Whoops I’ll halt the video. as many as. ten. Times to make inane comments. Others especially new ones halt in the middle of phrases or with one second on the tape. But Don does an excellent job. He makes well timed halts and always has interesting comments. If you want.to listen to the song without reaction you can always pull up the song and. listen. with no interruption.
