I have a chronic condition and it was really helpful to learn that the original definition of self care was medical and referred to everything you need to get/be well that is not administered by a medical professional, whether that's changing bandages, taking medication, eating well, getting outside, resting, hygiene, etc. It doesn't help so much when you're trying to talk about community care/support but it's really good for the day-in-day-out work.
@sportzriter132 ай бұрын

What a great video Hannah! I will also add this: The AMOUNT of product being used at any given time is RIDICULOUS. You don't need scoops and gobs products for them to be effective. For example: these influencers use 2-3 droppers full of 1 serum, then the same amount of another serum....then a big scoop of cream, it's CRAZY and WASTEFUL. Most serums only require a few drops to be effective and really good serums are too expensive to be wasted in this manner. Using this amount of product only adds to the overconsumption of products and wasting your money. Cheers from Canada!

Hannah, as a therapist, I can't tell you how happy I am to see this being addressed on such a large platform. I hear far too many people saying they "can't afford self-care", showing just how skewed the true meaning of self-care has become. True, in-depth self-care does not cost a thing. Sure, getting your nails done and a drive through Starbucks is a nice treat(I am all about both!), but that is something fun and enjoyable in the moment and has nothing to do with truly addressing self-needs; getting enough sleep and exercise, taking care of your health and mental health, spending time with loved ones who feed your soul, or choosing alone time to self-reflect. Even setting boundaries is a form of self care. Thank you for bringing this to light!
@tezzanoia2 ай бұрын
I absolutely agree with you except for one point: things like getting your nails done/doing your nails CAN be a form of self-care for certain people too! I'm autistic and have severe sensory issues of my nails aren't done for example, so it's an absolute necessity to function in everyday life. And I know there's other autistic people out there with similar issues. Of course we're quite the exception and in most cases it really is more of a nice treat and pampering yourself (which can be short-term self-care once in a while, but isn't long-term self-care usually, which is an important difference imo). Another example is that I get dysphoric atm when my hair washes out to a pastel shade, so long(ish)-term self-care for me can also include re-dying my hair. Basically, what I wanna say is that sometimes things that look like short-term pampering yourself self-care could be long-term self-care for certain people too. Self-care is a very personal thing and looks different from person to person

Have a chat with a friend, make fun plans for the future like meeting up someplace. Take a class in something fun like art at a local organization. What I see as self-care online is garbage. The products are expensive and not proven to do anything but put a big hole in your bank account. Then you stress about bills which counters everything it was said to do.

Having a bubble bath and dessert in the tub every Sunday is fun, and definitely can help maintain a positive mindset and whatnot for the week ahead, therefore helping with mental health, but it's not the same as going to therapy and actively working on yourself for example! self-care improves your quality of life, and it also challenges you too

I had a therapist tell me self care should be WORK and it's not about a product or an item; it's a practice. It's not complicated but it's WORK. It's more than one bubble bath but rather a regular hygiene routine; it's not one hot chocolate after a rough day but rather regular, daily breaks. Not one five minute meditation but daily practice for weeks and months. it takes time, commitment, and planning. Etc etc. That has really stuck with me. Self care is nutrition, exercise, cleansing, et. What do I do? I watch my dog watch out the window lol. She keeps me grounded and thankful!!!
@stephaniethesoprano2 ай бұрын
YES! I just tried to make this point in another reply but you've nailed exactly what I was trying to say. Self care should challenge you, and set you up for success. I literally was just thinking, it's more than one bubble bath... maybe it's a regular hygiene routine or maybe it's devoting your Sunday evening every week to having a bubble bath with your fav show and dessert and a glass of wine! But the meaning of the bubble bath with all the bells and whistles is that it's something that inspires a positive feeling, the actual act of self care in this scenario is the consistency and routine. The bubble bath could be anything, exercise, devoting time to a new hobby, cooking nutritious food, regular doctor check ups... Self care is a mix of both the fun, aesthetic stuff, and the boring, mundane, and potentially scary stuff, but none of it means anything unless it has consistency and intention behind it. Self care = consistency!

Yes! My regular hygiene routine is taking a shower every night; I cleanse my face, shampoo, conditioner, and use body wash. When I finish showering, I using a serum and moisturizer, that’s a total of 3 products, and then I brush my teeth and lay in bed. In the morning, I use 4 skin care products, I use a cleanser, toner, vitamin c serum, and sunscreen/moisturizer. I use a mixture of Korean products and La Roche Posay. The most expensive product I use is $23.99 sunscreen/moisturizer from La Roche Posay. My cheapest skincare product is $12. Using these products are expensive to me as is, I cannot imagine myself spending more than $80 on ONE PRODUCT

I'm gonna have to disagree on your therapist's take because way too many people with mental health conditions who need self care more than anyone else, classify as people who overwork themselves, and need to take time to actually settle down.

I recently learned that sometimes self-care isn't actually fun. Often, it is "investing" in your future health/happiness. For example, I don't enjoy cleaning or exercising. But I do enjoy having a clean apartment and a healthy body. So I do those things because that is taking care of myself.

The setup of my house has the master suite off the back side of the kitchen so in the morning when I get up, the first thing I see when I leave my bedroom is the sink and counters- they're right in front of me. I felt so uncomfortable last time I went, adds were plasted over the entire office for different cosmetic procedures and they didn't seem to pay much attention to the medical issues I came in for. In fact they got the diagnosis completely wrong and I had to return for correction. At least they were completely apologetic and admitted they had dropped the ball. Thank you for saying, that not buying/or doing stuff is Self-care too. I tried so many Self-care things over the last years. Some of them worked an I still use/do them, others did not. I am working on using things up, be more mindful about what I buy and appreciate the things I have around me. So hearing that that is Self-care too feels really nice and motivating to me ❤

I served in the Peace Corps for two years and had no electricity or plumbing. I got to my village by hiking 8 hours. I am still, to this day, grateful for my dishwasher, roads, electricity, washing machine and dryer, etc. in other words, things that are taken for granted unless you didn’t have them! Self-care for me is being able to enjoy the luxuries we take for granted!

First of all, thanks for this video. It is powerful. For me, a good self-care example is having enough time to read a book. I realized this when I was talking with a friend, and she told me "I have not read a book for years, because I do not have time". Another good example of good self-car is learning new things. It makes me feel smart, commitment to myself, and young!

I met this lady from Africa who had a version of self care despite limited resources. It was a small part of her day to relax. She used heated up water and put her feet in it like a foot spa. It was so simple but I think it’s a great idea that self care can happen at any time place or price range.

It almost feels like we’ve equated treating ourselves with taking care of ourselves, when those things are VERY different. Taking care of yourself means drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, eating nourishing foods, etc., and while treating yourself has a place in self-care, it strays from the fundamental definition of it.

I’m convinced that people on social media use the phrase “self care” the same way that Tom & Donna used “treat yo’ self” on Parks & Rec. “Clothes - self care. Fragrances - self care. Massages - self care. Mimosas - self care. Fine leather goods - self care.” Except Tom & Donna did that once a year, not every Tuesday.
@dpauline44822 ай бұрын

That's such an apt comparison too because Ben's "treat yo' self" item was the batman suit. A good reminder that our self care doesn't have to be all these expensive things like in the video but it can be just a simple cheap thing that we already have at home

Dermatologists will say that you only need to use a total of 3 - 4 products for face care. They recommend a gentle face cleanser, non-alcohol toner, vitamin type skin product, and face moisturizer. They say any more than that is overkill. Because you are placing layer upon layer of products on your skin. With so many products on your face, they aren't able to reach the skin because of all the other products. Not only that, but using so many products can actually cause harm from blocking the pores or skin irritation, rashes, etc. Also depending how old you are, those who are young shouldn't use products that are designed specifically for older women as the ingredients in them is actually harmful to young skin, which in turn can cause someone who is young to have skin that looks older than they are. This over the top of skin care products is crazy, in the end people are causing more harm than good, aswell as wasting money on products that aren't even doing anything because of all the other product layers that they have applied.

I’m a chemistry student, founder and CEO of my cosmetic line. And definitely adding so many layers is not good! Sometimes all of those products react with each other and counteract the benefits of each products. Plus your skin does NOT need soo many products at once !
@Justanothercog242 ай бұрын
Plus the ones who are pushing a new product every other day. A skincare routine should be consistent. Not only because results take time, but also to be able to nail down potential reactions. Use 50 products per week, it'll take forever to figure out which one is causing a rash or breakout.

I was raised by a mother who was a widow at the age of 33 with three children, my mother passed away at the age of 42 did not have one cavity in her head. Her skin was flawless. Her hair was shiny. She was fit, and her self-care regiment was washing her face with a mild soap, rinsing it, and then using witch hazel on her face, she wore minimal makeup, she wore sunglasses, and when she worked outside in the garden, she always wore hat, she taught us the same self-care tips, she took care of our hair when we were young girls, conditioned it with whatever type hair we had, whether it was oily or dry, she came up with a home remedy that worked, my sister had dry hair so she used a mayonnaise conditioner that she concocted, and it worked, my hair was curly so she took care of my curly hair and kept it hydrated. She did not use heat on it and I wore a satin cap at night. As far as our skin care was concerned, we followed her regiment and I also bathing we didn’t have bubble Bath if we had a skin rash or something she use baking soda in our bath water. We used a mild soap and she taught us how to bathe our body in a way that would keep us fresh the entire day. I am a senior citizen now and I’m still following my mother‘s regiment. I don’t buy fancy products no body oils eye creams, but I keep my body clean and I have a self-care in the morning. I wash my face With a mild soap. I rinse it well pad it dry. I put witch hazel on it and then I use a moisturizer on my face that does not have any fragrance to it, but I do use essential oils in my lotions to put on my body. I don’t use perfumes. They are expensive. The more frugal the, we also stayed hydrated with water, and my mother would not allow us to drink, carbonated drinks or coffee we limited our caffeine, we stayed active outside up to the age of 19 or 20, I don’t spend a lot of money on make up or lotions, I do check the ingredients. My mother used Jurgens face lotion and ponds cold cream, so I have continued to do that and I am 75 years old and my skin is clear. I don’t have many wrinkles. I do have age wrinkles, but that’s just the way God created us. Sorry for the long post, but I just had to say what I had to say, these young women are spending too much money on self-care when it can be a very simple, quick and rewarding experience.

@@diamondsparkle9967 yes I agree, the expensive products that are on the market in this era is causing young women to spend a lot of money on products when this simplistic self-care routine can be successful, soap, and water, and a astringent and a mild moisturizer and sunscreen is sufficient, as I said in my former post or comment my mother passed away at the age of 42 her skin was flawless her hair was shiny. She was fit and she was very active outside plus doing her household chores. I have been watching a KZbin channel, of low income family, this young woman has four children. They live in a very modest home and her skin care routine is very simple and she has beautiful skin and hair. She spends a lot of time outside and that is her exercise gardening playing with her children and keeping her modest house, clean and admire her for her simplistic way of self-care, I remember my grandmother who was 80 years old when she passed away and she did have wrinkles, but they were not as prominent as the wrinkles on ladies faces that you see now in this era,

Apply as it suits you in other stuff as well, for example socks/underwear, 1 for each day of the week). You never worry of running out of clean sets, stress out to put laundry on time, things just circulate and blend with your daily schedule. Works wonders for me and makes my life simpler and easier.
