Getting interviewed by them during the internship rush seems to be as much of a college experience as getting preyed on to sell knives in the high school cafeteria. We were pitched during SWE and I went through the whole interview process while I was also interviewing at a literal national lab that would pay 4500 dollars for the summer and have me doing research in my field. I should send Hannah that story because I probably annoyed the crap out of my recruiter.

I like how you said, if you “failed” in an MLM, you really succeeded, because you did exactly what the business model is expecting you to do. That’s such an important point. It drives me crazy!

"People should never blame themselves because the system is literally not designed to be sustainable or giving everyone an income" in a different way and to a less directly predatory and egregious extent, that can apply for a lot of people in society at large. That's honestly kind of a good message for people to stop blaming themselves for being sunk in poverty or struggling paycheck-to-paycheck. It's not that you're "not working hard enough" -- it's that they system is working exactly as intended. You get paid pennies, and the employer enjoys a huge profit.

I'm from Europe, from Estonia and Southwestern Advantage is a huge experience of many students! It is advertised to students as an opportunity to spend summer in the US whilst learning all the business hacks. So - I'm late to this post - but I know about southwest advantage. Years ago - people on our Nextdoor page were complaining about the aggressive kids selling books. (the kids weren't aggressive - they were aggressively (read - desperately) selling.) I'm in Texas - it was summer, and 115 degrees. The kid who came to our door was 16. He looked like he hadn't eaten in days, and I honestly thought he was going to pass out. He was in a jacket and tie in 115 degrees. I brought him inside, gave him some water and a grilled cheese and asked him where in Austin he lived (he needed to go home, and I was gonna take him). He told me he didn't live in Austin, he's from Houston. (3.5 hours away) His 'boss' put him on a bus with a bunch of other kids, and they dropped them off at a nearby intersection every day. He was in tears. He just wanted to go home. My heart sank. I asked him if he would be in trouble for quitting, and he said, "I don't know...they didn't tell us anything" I bought him a Greyhound ticket for that evening, let him call his mama (they wouldn't allow him to take his cell - his mom ended up reporting it stolen), hang out, watch TV, relax in the AC until it was time to catch the bus. The most infuriating part? When he didn't rejoin his group - NO ONE WENT TO LOOK FOR HIM. He told me later they never reached out to his emergency contact or anything. Luckily he met with a nice lady who got him home, but what if he'd met with danger?!? No one cared!!! He told me they visited his part of the city, and sold them all on this 'rags to riches' BS. And he fell for it, like so many of his friends. None of them made money. A few of them ended up meeting others like me who saw the scam for what it was and got them home. We're still in contact, he's a great kid who ended up in a bad situation. He's in school now to get his PA license, and I expect great things from him, he's such a talented and bright kid. I'm glad this didn't break his spirit, because I love him so much. (and I buy his books - its a little inside joke between us that since I didn't buy books from him when he was trapped in southwestern advantage, I buy them now! hee hee)

The first story brings up a HUGE issue with the foster care system. The bio mother couldn't regain custody of her child because of her financial situation, yet the foster care system will PAY someone else monthly in order to take care of that child. But heaven forbid they pay the bio mother the same amount, which seems like the biggest hurdle for her to jump through. There are so many issues with the foster care system, but this is one of the biggest issues imo. If you're willing to pay STRANGERS to take care of a displaced child, but refuse to pay the biological family the same amount in order to take care of the child, that's a problem. *this is in terms of CFS cases where finances are the issue, not Siriano where there are other issues that the child was removed for*

I'm so glad to hear someone finally talk about Southwestern Advantage. I also heard about them while I was in college, in fact they gave their pitch to one of my lectures. At first I thought it sounded like a fantastic opportunity, $10,000 over the summer and some experience? Sounds great! I remember scanning the QR code they gave us and I got a call not too long after from the person who came and spoke to us. I remember thinking how sketchy it was because the person didn't tell me their name or the name of the company when they initially called me, and they ended the call with asking me "Are you a reliable person? This is an extremely limited opportunity so we only want those who are reliable and follow through on their word..." and that was probably my biggest red flag instantly. After this I did a bit more research on them, and honestly...there's not a ton of information about them. But what I did find were countless posts on college reddit pages and r/antiMLM about them. Luckily I ghosted them the moment I saw these and haven't been bothered since, but they're a real menace of a "company". Not to mention, evidently they've been banned from several college campuses around the United States AND in Europe. I would love to see you do a deep dive of this company because they target and prey on vulnerable college students who are looking for experience and extra money. Some of the stories I've heard from people about this company are horrific and I don't think I've ever heard of a more evil company.

Oh god, the book salesman!! In our old neighborhood in a different state, we could count on them coming through every summer. They had all the usual gross salesman tactics. One of the worst, and the last time I spoke with one, the man got angry at us when we said we weren’t interested. He crossed the street, and upon realizing they weren’t home, pee’d on their front bush! So crazy.

Omg i did a summer with sw advantage last summer and i had the EXACT same experience. Had to knock on NEIGHBORHOOD houses to find a place to live, the 5:59am jumping out of bed and running to our cars with the same breakfast everyday, etc literally everything. I had so many horrible things that happened over the summer and it resulted in me only making $3,500. I spent way more money than i made, if you dont have a positive attitude the whole summer you will have a bad summer. I worked my a** off and i got s/a’d and had so many car problems and so much more. The company has good parts to it but a lot of people have horrible experiences, like myself and this girl :( my boyfriend had done a summer before me and he won this mexico trip that you get if you sold over 1000 units, i went to the mexico trip w him and met all these super cool people and i decided to go out, once i was out there everyone turned into work mode and didnt care if i was going through something, they would maybe act like it for a second then act like it never happened. Theres so much more i could talk about i wish i knew which girl this was or if i met her at sales school or something:/

I’m a college athlete at a large state university, so I don’t have time to work a job during the school year. These people came into a class of mine and presented, they gave us cards to write our names down. I was not paying attention and was listening to music so I stupidly wrote my contact info down. I get a call that lasts about 30 seconds asking if I was interested in a summer internship. I go to a meeting, and in about five minutes I realize it’s a MLM. I didn’t even make it through the whole meeting, half way through they asked us what we thought. I gave an uncertain answer, just to not be rude, explaining I need to train for next season. They literally cut me off and awkwardly escort me out. I hated the cult feeling of everything, I had to take a shower when I got home. I’m upset with my university for allowing them to recruit our students, I think it’s a bad look for the school. Also, students in this program don’t learn anything useful, most of them seem to come out thinking they’re failures. I’m working on getting the school school to ban them from campus. Several other universities such as Harvard and Maryland have done so. It’s sick to exploit hardworking college students and put them in danger. There’s probably some people at the top making ridiculous money while doing practically nothing. I would really love to bring this entire company down. I really hope your video blows up, there’s a bunch of videos made by their brainwashed employees talking about how great SW advantage is. Everyone thinking of joining needs to know the truth. If they can’t find employees, then they won’t be able to do business. I can’t believe this company is allowed to operate. I really hate them and I never even worked for them.

Southwestern...oh boy...I live in Estonia and in 2015 a girl I knew tried to recruit me into her team. I was on my last year of uni and was about to graduate in the summer. When I said that the commitee will discuss my thesis in May then she said that maybe they are willing to do an exeption for me and gather earlier. Excuse me, what? I told her even though she tried different techniques to get me into her team and in the end also asked for my friends' numbers to call them. The brainwashing is strong with them. A friend of mine actually went to the US to sell books and before he went I told him not to get brainwashed. When he returned he was a completely different person. People who have participated in this also say that not everyone earn thousands and some only earn enough to buy a plane ticket back home.

11:36 i started to see another pattern here, they are recruiting people who is already at a good position in a job, like in school they recruited the professor, in food chain they recruited the manager (this was in one of your video as well, i forgot which one tho) so that they can easily get someone to be recruited as they already have 'pool of people' under them
@Nesyaishere2 жыл бұрын
19:10 this is cruel, but as cruel as it is, 'training' like this happened a lot especially where i lived, of course they pack it as another activity not necessarily running while carrying a backpack full of books but you get the idea. Where i lived you need to do something like this if you are a junior in college (we have no sophomore system, so junior is the earliest stage of the school whether it be highschool or college or in job situation), usually it's on orientation days(which you're suppose to know your campus environment, get to know your friend, your senior etc) it's the time where you're not taking/starting any classes yet, your senior also get to trick the junior as well during the orientation days. Some news have also been reported about some 'unfortunate incident' when the orientation was held. Students died, traumatized, stressed out, passing out during the process. But it's keep happening again and again like we never learn anything. Some officials working for the government also do that training, usually the training rolling on mud etc before they officially become the official, which the more and more im thinking about it, that's so military like. Sorry if i miss some grammar rule as english is not my first language 🌱

I was in it too and horrible and traumatizing. The mental and emotion abuse that was just excused as “preparing us for marriage” and “helping us build character” was unacceptable. I just didn’t realize it until I was removed from the situation. I didn’t stay the whole summer. After a month, I knew it was time for me to go. It took me months (nearly a year) to get my mental health back to somewhat normal. (And all of the friends I made plus majority of my roommates ended up leave when I did. I think that says a lot.)

Looking back, I'm pretty sure I encountered a SW Advantage rep a few summers ago. I was living in a small town at the time and I was home alone one Saturday afternoon with my toddler. The neighbor kids would always throw their football into our backyard and it was customary for them to knock out ring the door bell to ask permission to go get their ball from our yard. I heard someone knock this particular day and assumed it was the neighbor kids, but to my surprise it was a gentleman, likely in his 20's trying to pitch me kids books. He tried to invite himself in to further the pitch but I refused. So he proceeded to talk my ear off in my doorway for 15 minutes before finally leaving. The whole interaction made me very uncomfortable. Mostly because I was home alone, but also because he was halfway unwilling to take no for an answer. He was foreign, I forget from which European country, so I chalked it up to that, and I don't remember the company he said he was with, but thinking about it now, it had to be SW Advantage. I'm realizing how deep he was in this life and now my heart breaks for him and people like him who were so desperate or mislead to agree to doing this with their summers.

I am so glad that someone shared about their horrendous experience with Southwest Advantage. This story gives me more compassion for those poor, college kid sales reps. One comes to my door every summer. (A neighbor oh-so-helpfully pointed out our house as being one with small children.) The sales reps are so aggressive. They want to come into our house, and I have felt like I almost have to crowd them out of the doorway and slam the door in the faces in order to make them leave. It creeps me out, honestly. While I will still be disturbed by these kinds of interactions, this gives me insight on what these poor kids are going through. Next time, if they agree to stop pitching to me, I can ask them if they need a snack or some water.

You bring up an interesting point about those who prey on others for the MLMs. It's important to remember that most MLMs employ cult-like tactics to keep you in the group (manipulation/brainwashing being the most common). These tactics are incredibly powerful. MLMs (and cults in general) are designed to strip away your individuality, make you dependent on the group, give you a new sense of identity and purpose, which causes you to do things you wouldn't normally have done. We have to remember that those who recruit are victims of this system, just as much as those who have left. Thank you for shedding light on this, and thank you for making these videos.

You! You can work with us and earn some money. Totally... Trust us." Then they leave them basically stranded so they have to rely on the company and kind strangers which leaves them vulnerable and dependent so they keep doing what the MLM wants because they feel unsafe and don't really have much of a choice because the sunk cost fallacy is a pain in decision making. @@PhantomRolePlayer it’s quite an experience isn’t it? I’m on the fence as to whether Mormonism as whole qualifies as a cult, but the mission experience definitely does. The separation from friends and family, not doing anything that makes you unique in any way, breaking down your personality until all that’s left is the church, right down to your name. It can be so damaging.
@jaeydnheeren7 ай бұрын
in my opinion, mormonism does absolutely work like a cult. theres a lot of documentaries out there on hulu and youtube detailing the horrors of the mormon church. child brides, multiple wives, paying the church so much money and NEVER seeing a return in any way with genuine services or function, the mentality of perfection and creating the ‘perfect nuclear family’ with a big home…honestly the 8 passengers family was a pretty good depiction of the mormon church and how its ideals create such disdain and hatred. not to mention the sheer amount of cults that have been birthed from mormonism and mormon leaders. the amount of abuse that happens and being told to never talk about it. im sure there are singular churches within the mormon religion that may be fine, but when the majority of public and private stories are filled with such horrific displays of misogyny, predator protection, abuse, and exploitation…its hard for me to believe most organized religions arent cults, just on a more socially acceptable scale. i didnt grow up mormon, but there was a period of time i HAD to go to church until i legit had a screaming match with my parents about how they cant force me to. i’ve always been very against being forced to do things, even from a young age and spoke out actively about it especially with my parents.

The woman/girl that came to her door spoke very little English and basically tried to force her way into my friends house after she had told her no to buying books. My friend has two small children and she thought this person was possibly in a human trafficking ring. Mainly because after she managed to push this woman out of her house the girl RAN back to her car and SPED away; So she did call the police on her.
