Important note is that a lot of those performances were supposed to be bad/inappropriate and the plot and dialogue surrounding them suggest it. For example, Mr. Schuster tells Rachel that singing “endless love” is a very inappropriate song for them to sing together because he’s a teacher. And Finn and Rachel being all weird and Christian is problematic and offensive and they get in trouble for it. Now, I can’t defend ALL of these choices, but some are actually purposefully bad
@stephaniecason

Another thing to mention is that Finn and Rachel were intentionally problematic and offensive because they were trying to throw the little competition the class was having so Sam and Quinn could win and they thought they couldn’t beat them any other way.

Also "Push It"! It wasn't Schue's decision, it was the Glee kids deciding that in order to recruit new members they should use what teenagers are interested in, and that is sex. They wanted to do a sex song, but it worked against them in the end because it cemented their reputation as complete losers.

Most of the songs made sense in context. For context: - *Do you wanna touch* : the sex education episode. I do agree that having your substitute teacher singing this with the students is questionable, but the song rocks. - *With you I'm born again* : yep, this is what happens when you let teens do whatever they want freely, they will choose the most dramatic/cringe thing ever. - *Push it* : it was their 1st onstage performance, the Glee club knew they were losers, and they try to give what teens want (sex). The Principal was singing internally religious songs, the teachers were horrified, the club was almost banned but the rest of the students cheered. - *Toucha toucha toucha touch me* : Rocky Horror episode kinda sucked, but Mrs Pillsbury always have been the most sexually repressed character ever due to some mental issues, this was the start of her becoming more comfortable with her body (it took another season and a marriage to do the thing, though). - *Endless Love-Crush-Don't Stand So Close to Me/Young Girl* : the plot of the episode is Rachel having a crush on Mr Schuester, he is rejecting her. -Mr Schuester awful rapping is one of the internal jokes of the show. - *Gangnam Style* :was the 1st perfomance with the inexperienced Finn as their coach. - *Tell me something good* : Mr Schu tries to seduce Sue to get revenge on her. Turns out there is an UST lol - *A little less conversation-Cucaracha* : Turns out Mr Schu is only the Spanish teacher because there was an empty vacant. He is not prepared for the job. The Latinx characters calls him out and he becomes the History teacher instead. - *Toxic* : he used the Glee club to seduce Mrs Pillsbury. The Britney episode was also a commentary on teen sexuality/sexualisation by others (and the seeds of Britanna). The rest is just cringe.

The thing with Glee is that Gleeks love it and hate it equally and passionately. It’s best to watch it without trying to take it too seriously because they sure didn’t. There are definitely scenes and whole episodes that I just can’t bring myself to watch ever again but the rest of it I watch over and over and will never get sick of. When they did something right they really did it very well. They touched on some very serious issues that at the time weren’t discussed on network tv at all.

The first one is still my favorite performance from Gwyneth's time on glee. Puppets: Blaine was extremely lonely with Kurt being in New York, and he basically went crazy and started making puppets of everyone so he could have the feeling of... "Control" over SOMETHING in his life (complete with a poisonous gas fever dream), and at the end he gave everyone their respective puppets (even making on for Adam Lambert's character) when everyone freaked out that it was creepy. Baby got back actually brought legal problems cuz they ripped the cringy, slowed cover from another artist and never gave the proper credits Shue sung a mashup of "don't stand so close to me" and "young girl" to Rachel in a (failed) attempt to wake her up from her very short lived crush on him (cuz she wasn't getting the attention she wanted from Finn). It was actually a very hilarious episode cuz his wife made her do chores around their apartment 😂

Fun fact: the Baby Got Back was not only ridiculous, but it was also a slap in the face on the original artist. Glee refused to pay Johnathan Coulton for his composition of Baby Got Back, even though they used exactly his lyrics and melody. Their response was that he should be glad for the exposure, even though they never credited him.
@JakeVonScott
@JakeVonScott 2 жыл бұрын
That's only half the truth, actually, and I wish people properly looked into this instead of just repeating what the "popular opinion" on the internet is... There's so much more to it, and it's not as simple as "Glee copied him and told him to be happy for the exposure". This type of thing has been happening since Glee started. Just look up Don't Stop Beleivin' by Petra Haden. The track is essentially the exact same as Glee's, beat for beat, but no one ever talks about Glee "stealing" that one, and only ever talk about Baby Got Back, and it's all because John C is a literal manchild who decided to go about it all the wrong ways. In short, Glee has never put artist credits on the show, furthermore, John changed the original so much that he didn't actually own any copyright to the song, or even his cover. Obviously when Glee covers songs they're going to be inspired by other renditions, but ever since the beginning, they've never given song credits, and they've only ever credited the original artist. John just chucked a tantrum because he felt robbed (personally, I think he has a right to receive credit, but he's done it in all the wrong ways) and that he should have been given credit, when this has been happening ever since Season 1... He just felt some sort of entitlement, and I'm not saying he doesn't deserve recognition, but the way he's gone about it is so elitist, immature, and like he's owed something, when like I said, legally, he's owed nothing. Again, I do think there is a blurred line somewhere, where artists who don't own any copyright should be credited. but that's an entire legal issue, and the way John went about it was very immature. He could have raised awareness to this issue (that I do agree with) in a better way. The issue is that Glee can cover as many songs as they want, but these smaller artists are making these unique renditions (John with Baby Got Back, and many others), but since they don't own any copyright, Glee/FOX legally doesn't own them anything; whether or not you agree with that practice is subjective. Glee leaving the "Johnny C" line in the song was their way of giving John credit, which he obviously disagreed with. Would he have preferred if they just kept the original line of "Mix-a-Lot's in trouble", instead? The "you should be happy for the exposure" quote is what he Tweeted out when he contacted FOX about the issue, and since he's bias, and has his own vendetta against them, he clearly put a negative spin on it. We'll never actually know what the message said, and I doubt it was as rude and abrupt as "you should just be happy for the exposure". As Adam Anders said in the AMA, it's just an unfortunate situation when it comes to doing covers of covers. And I get their point, if they had to credit John, then they'd have to credit everyone else. All these smaller KZbin artists and singers, sing one vocal riff on a song, Glee then uses that exact same riff, should they then have to credit that artist? It just opens a whole can of worms and is much more convoluted than you think. Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning anyone actions here, what Fox did was certainly a bad move, but they don't have any legal obligation to do it. If you want to look into it more, just google search "Adam Anders Glee AMA Reddit" and "Baby Got Back Glee Hypable" and you'll find a more non-biased, truthful narrative. Everyone just like to hate on it because it's popular to hate on Glee/Ryan/RIB/co, but the actual issue lies with FOX and Sir Mix a Lot
@boypaws
@boypaws 2 жыл бұрын
@@JakeVonScott "All these smaller KZbin artists and singers, sing one vocal riff on a song, Glee then uses that exact same riff, should they then have to credit that artist?" yes. literally yes. that's actually how copyright works. if you publish something, even if it's a fanwork or parody, you have copyright over it. it's illegal to use that work without credit or permission. it's a huge, complicated issue, but artists can and should sue large companies for stealing their work (obviously it's more complicated than that & large companies can just stretch out a lawsuit until a smaller artist can't pay for it anymore & settles out of court or drops the suit, but that's a whole other discussion). even though it's sir mix-a-lot's song, they *stole* john's composition of it. that's a violation of john's copyright. when they asked sir mix-a-lot to use his song they only got permission for *his* composition, not john's. john's composition is a transformative work and therefor belongs to him. it doesn't matter if you think he went about it "the wrong way." he's absolutely, 100% correct. he deserved compensation for his work being used. he deserves to call out glee & fox for stealing his work. he should continue to throw as many loud fits as he can until he's compensated for his stolen work.

Watching your reaction to all of these without any context is HILARIOUS! Ahahaha! Admittedly, there are a few songs in there that...well...HWHAT?! However, context CAN be provided to some of them (which I'm sure many people have already commented on, but I'll give you my take as well). The Rachel/Mr. Schu songs: those were from an episode where Rachel developed a very deep, unhealthy crush on Mr. Schu. One day in glee, Rachel didn't have a partner to sing with, so Mr. Schu was going to sing with her. Rachel picked an innappropriate song to sing with a teacher, which Mr. Schu tried to stop (but you know how pushy and determined Rachel can be). Mr. Schu went home to find Rachel cleaning his apartment (and his wife knew she was crushing on him, so she took advantage of Rachel and had her clean), so Mr. Schu drove her home, thus the song with Rachel in the backseat. The song Mr. Schu sang to her about being a baby underneath the makeup was his attempt at gently trying to break her of the crush without crushing her soul (apparently he did that to another student the year before that crushed on him). The Thong Song: Emma was marrying the disgusting coach, who wanted Thong Song as their wedding song, and Mr. Schu was trying to help Emma find a way to mash it up with her song choice (which ya just can't mash up Thong Song with any DECENT wedding song). The hispanic songs Mr. Schu sang - those were actually necessary to educate on sterotyping certain nationalities (Naya Rivera and Ricky Martin gave an incredible performance, I highly recommend). Basically, Mr. Schu wanted to validate himself as a Spanish teacher and assigned the glee kids to take a song and sing it in Spanish.

In Glee's defence (lol) a lot of these performances were used intentionally to be inappropriate for the plot of the episode like Born Again or Push It, the worst ones are where the writers un-ironically used these songs and usually in the weirdest most uncomfortable way possible. The whole show somehow managed to be self-aware and completely oblivious at the same time, that's what made it so unique haha

The most confusing thing about this for me is that the show SOMETIMES knows that it's doing this. You have that one duet with Will and Rachel where he's visibly uncomfortable (maybe just bc he's not into her rather than that she's a student idk) and in that Spanish episode he gets proper called out and it's great, but they still pulled shit like getting Jenna to do Gangnam Style. I just don't get whether they knew what they were doing or not, it's so baffling to me

Well, most of this perfomances are meant to be uncomfy due to story lines. The song for example you asked why Mr. Shue sings this to rachel is because she had a serious crush on him and did not understand any friendly hints, that he is not interested in her. Glee has many performances making us uncomfy for a reason. In one episode f.e. the studends get "vitamins" from the nurse. Not knowing that these are not truely vitamins. Of course the performances are not really nice to watch, especially out of context. But that's a good thing.

The seasons get better as they progress. A lot of people can relate to the characters and the situations they get into. I can relate to it for sure. I was bullied and picked on and I remember being chorus and when I was singing and being there, it made me feel better in my junior high school days. There are some songs that I love more than others. Glee talks about a lot of serious issues that people can relate to. The songs reflect their feelings.

Watching your reactions to these songs is HILARIOUS because since you haven't watched the show in its entirety, you're missing the context to some of them haha. For example, the songs at 4:40, 5:40 and 7:00 are from the same episode and the "With You I'm Born Again" performance was on purpose so they would lose and Quinn and Sam would win the duet competition.

yeah like at 4:40, it was supposed to be his way to reject Rachel when Rachel like Mr.Shue, because she's too young. But I do get why without context, it looks really wrong. 😭

So much context lost here 😅 The show is actually doing most of these uncomfortable situations for a plot reason and some tackle actual problems that can be very relatable for the audience. These characters are mostly teenagers and some plot points are made so they mess up, which can be very relateable for especially a younger audince. Not all acts in the show are appreciated even by the characters nor are they meant to be. For example, most of the Spanish songs Mr. Shue performs are looked down upon by the students as well and they're meant to be disliked for the plot. Most of them are made uncomfortable for a reason. Except for the puppets. That's just awkward for no good reason. Anyway, love the content as always 🧡 Have a great day ~

As a gleek I would like to defend myself with the fact that all of these performances make me speechless and uncomfy as well, I would be very concerned if I liked them at all 😂 I literally have to skip the baby got back one every time I get to that point in the show cuz I physically can’t bare myself to watch that it’s SO bad 😭 and the rest of them I have SEVERE 2nd hand embarrassment, some more than others and I bet you could pick out what ones😂 those are only a few songs out of the over 700 they did tho so those cancel it out for me. You just can’t focus on those uncomfy ones. Also it doesn’t make it a lot better lol but knowing the context behind the episode that they do these songs in helps with the confusion part, doesn’t take away the uncomfy tho lmao. Also when mr.schu was singing to Rachel, it wasn’t him being creepy. Rachel had a big crush on him and no matter how many times he tried to turn her down nicely cuz he didn’t want to hurt her, she wouldn’t get it so he thought singing would get it through… it didn’t😂 at the end of that episode she’s over it tho. And Gwyneth Paltrow is there as a character named holy holiday. She’s a cool substitute teacher and she shows up in a few episodes.

I’m gonna try to explain the ones I remember… Do You Wanna Touch: Gwyneth Paltrow’s character is a sub teacher that week and the kids are like, torn on abstinence or whatever and while not appropriate. It is basically a “lesson” that wanting to do the do is normal if you choose to act on it. ALL the performances with Shue and Rachel. Basically Rachel had a crush on Mr Shue for a week or so. I don’t really remember how that came about but him singing to her was his terrible attempt at letting her down easy. Her in the back of the car I believe is just a dream Rachel had. Shue and all of the Spanish songs…I believe was I no the episode that revealed that the Spanish teacher position was all that was available so he himself was learning Spanish in night classes and Santana tore him to shreds about the stereotypes that Shue perpetuated as a result of not understanding Latine culture. Toucha toucha touch me; during their rocky horror episode. They eventually decided it would be inappropriate for students to do the show (which is correct) but I think that scene was really just in their because they don’t let Emma sing that much which is a shame. I don’t have an explanation for why they let Mr Shue rap so much and quasi flirt with his students…he shouldn’t be around kids. But yknow…that somehow realistically tracks. Toxic would’ve been AT LEAST 5x less cringey of Mr Shue wasn’t in it. Still inappropriate given that it was very provocative choreo but at least it wouldn’t be inappropriate because their teacher was performing with them. What does the Fox Say…yea idk…it was the shows last season I think and I’m pretty sure they just ran out of ideas

They performed over 700 songs over the years and these 20 are totally wild out of context. But with the context and the 680 other performances in mind, the show was net good in my opinion. Yeah, the thing about glee is that it’s a weirdly enjoyable train wreck. Like, it showed so many issues that teenagers and even adults go through and more often than not were really good and sensitive about how they portrayed them. Then there’s all the character inconsistencies and problematic parts of the show that even diehard fans hate cause I can’t think of many characters that weren’t frustratingly hated at one point or another, not to mention all of shue’s inappropriate/uncomfortable song numbers. “Shake it out”, “Just the way you are” and “cough syrup” not just their covers but the scenes that go with them, tackling overcoming abuse, accepting homosexuality and a very complex bully that tried to k*ll himself when he was outed as gay, respectfully, those are the kinds of scenes and songs that kept people like me watching cause when glee got it right they really got it right.

Backstory: The weird religious song Rachel & Finn sang, was to purposefully lose a duets contest. Gwyneth Paltrow was on there as a sub teacher, and was singing that song because of a discussion about sex because the students had questions. "Thong Song" was because Emma was marrying Ken the football coach and he wanted that as their first dance...why? Who knows lol The song Will was singing to Rachel, was because she was being creepy cause she had a crush on him (singing Crush in the backseat), hence why they are singing Endless Love and she's got the scary eyes for him. Gangnam Style was something different to get the attention of the judges at either regionals or nationals. "Push It" was because the students didn't want to do another boring song at a rally that Will chose for them to sing, surely something to do with Disco or Journey since that's his fallbacks lol The puppets was because Blaine missed Kurt while he was in NY so he created a Kurt puppet to feel close to him, then somehow they all got made lol But I have to say, some of the episodes I enjoyed the most were the ones with Gwyneth Paltrow, shes a great singer and actress and brought some great comedy to the show

Even knowing the context for most of these (i.e. in the first Holly Holliday, a very over-the-top substitute teacher who makes guest appearances, is asked to come in and teach the glee club about sex ed after realizing they know pretty much nothing) doesn't stop the pure cringe I get watching them. Also at 4:50 Schue is singing that to Rachel because she's developed an obsessive crush on him and he's trying to let her down easily. It's a mashup with Don't Stand So Close to Me.
