Some cold weather camping tips we've found helpful: 1.Take a hot water bottle to bed with you 2. Go to bed "warm" (drink a hot drink, do some squats before hopping into bed) 3. Wear fresh dry clothes to bed (new pair of socks too)4. If sleeping on an airbed, put a warm blanket over it (to insulate between you and your sleeping bag/bedding) 4. Wear a warm/comfy hat, I like to pull mine over my eyes in the morning to block light . Good luck, hope the nights warm up for you!

As a proud Canadian, I had to research 20:22...The Yankee comes to the south for a visit and quickly leaves. The Damn Yankee comes for a visit and never leaves. The God Damn Yankee comes for a visit, never leaves, and then goes on and on about how much nicer it was back home. Interesting :)

Sounds about right. When it's cold I'm glad I live in the deep south. When it's blazing hot with humidity at or near full saturation I wish I lived up north. All I ask of anyone who comes here from up north is that they don't try to force people to change their ways on their account. We're generally good people until the bear gets poked.

As someone who has spent a massive amount of time outdoors (SAR Field Leader) to stay warm at night, there are a few simple tricks. First of all, blankets are key, cotton is horrendous for any kind of warm retention, even layers. In an unheated van (therefore damp) there going to get damp feeling and draw all the heat right out of you. Wool blankets are the way to go, Pendleton Oregon woolen mills has great ones that are seconds that are cheaper. Hudson bay blankets are great to. Woolrich is pretty decent as well. Second of all pajamas that are warm really help, something like stanfields union suit can be used as both pajamas and base layers. A few luxuries include a wool mattress topper (frankenmuth woolen mills) and duvet. A hot water bottle at night is also a wonderful thing.

Look into getting a Camco Wave 3 or a Wave 6 heater. It's a catalytic heater. It runs off of propane, but produces less condensation than a Mr. Buddy. Plus, if I remember correctly it doesn't run with an open flame. Always want to have a carbon monoxide detector for safety measure. They are def on the pricier side of things, but it seems worth it.

Short of an actual van heater, an auto-start for your van would take the pain out of getting out of bed to a cold interior. I had no permanent heat source in my ford camping van. I would set the van heater on high before going to bed. Before getting up, I would turn on the van with the remote starter. A simple start system can be installed for under $200. There are remote starters that are temperature activated and will periodically start your van during the night according to a set interior temperature.

Pretty cool seeing you so near where my family comes from (we're from ~40 miles northwest of Pikeville), deep in those "hollers," as they're called locally. Yes, hiking in that country without a body of water is very worthwhile in the winter, as the view from those mountain tops is so beautiful. Those lonely cemeteries are what's left of tiny communities and families that existed back in there 2-3-4 generations ago; basically they're all that's left, with recent graves being for people who wanted to be buried next to ancestors. LOTS of lost history in there! You'd be surprised, there's even graves on top of some of those mountains. Or so it is near where I come from.

While enjoying some outdoor time in the extended back drive of a rest area, a man drove up in a Cadillac and asked if I wanted to buy the gold necklace he was holding out. My dog was secured to a tree away from the van. All kinds of things went through my head. VERY STRESSFUL. Lesson learned.

You should invest in an electric blanket. Your deep cycle battery can more than handle one. I slept in freezing temps in a tent with nothing else other than one. Kept me plenty warm. Happy vanning😉

Your plants stay pretty sturdy as you drive.

The "large naked man" probably thought he was alone in the woods. Until he saw you drove by. lol

So glad you came through KY. We have a great variance of environments here, from Mississippian lowland cypress to the eastern forests that abut the Appalachian mountains. I surely pray that your time in Red River Gorge was complete with a pie from Miguel's Pizza.

Ahhhhh I loved the “you ain’t no yankee are ya?” Omg my history teacher was just talking about people in the south saying that!!!

It’s so incredibly normal to say that here. Lol. It’s funny that others are surprised by this.

you should invest in a weighted blanket for the winter nights in the van, target has them pretty cheap and they definitely keep the warmth in
