It's so interesting to me that the English speaking world calls them 'French braids', when we in the French speaking world call those 'tresses anglaises' so literally 'English braids' 🤔 Anyways, they look stunning on you, with the fringe, i love it 🤩 😘

I love the idea of a new resolution for each month. It’s one of the reasons why I dont generally do resolutions because I feel like Im just setting myself up for failure. I did a makeup no-buy this month and I did it without really planning it. I just wasn’t buying any makeup. And then I realized that I hadn’t bought anything and decided to just stick with it for the duration of the month. I have a few ideas for February but need to narrow it down to one.

I’ve been doing a goal of keeping tiny promises to myself every day. Carve out time to write an escapist novel? Done! Read an entire book on a Sunday despite laundry?? Do it!!! Feeling overwhelmed?? SAY NO AND PROTECT YOUR EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING, SELF!! Also working on being a self-cheerleader rather than looking for it elsewhere. I’m excited to see what all goals you end up having this year!!

As a non-native english speaker. May I ask what is an escapist novel? Is that a novel you read to escape the reality of your own now? (Such as a romantic chick flick or science fiction?) or am I missing something?

I'm on a no-buy in 2021 for cosmetics, clothing, and homewares. But à la HLP I'm keeping a "wish list" in the notes on my phone so that if I see a beautiful thing I desperately want, I can wait til 2022 and see if the beautiful thing still excites me enough to buy it... Printfresh pajamas are at the top of the list.

My achieved goal for January ended up being ordering less takeout. Grand total for the month is ten orders, and considering I used to get food sometimes twice a day or like every day, that's massive! My apartment is really small, and the landlord only gave me a mini fridge, so storing fresh food is difficult and cooking it is even harder because I have no counter space. I wanted to get my apartment really spotless, furniture rearranged for easier access, etc., but with the semester looming, I think changing my environment really radically was too much unfamiliarity and stress to execute, and pushing for it would leave me totally drained for days. But!!! I still did something really big and positive!!! I think taking things month by month is the way to do it this year for sure, and February's goal is probably going to be getting in more movement and exercise or not ignoring my skin and haircare so much when I'm feeling stuck and low. If I never rip through an ancient walnut-sized tangle again, it'll be too soon 😬

For the past few years I've planned most of my goals and resolutions on a quarterly basis. As you said in the video, a year is a long time frame and can be really discouraging! Some of my resolutions have been writing daily, drinking x amount water, no-buy, being sober, reading x amount of pages, no take out, set bedtime, and not pressing the snooze button! Usually the months afterward I find I have better habits than I did before I challenged myself.

The beginning of January was a reset for me on a few things including eating healthier (I really had to). Overall I've been doing great. I do like the monthly resolutions instead of the yearly because you reset at the first of each month. My dad doesn't believe in New Year's resolutions since he's like why not do it anytime. I totally see his point, but sometimes you need the beginning of the year or month to make a positive change witg a mental reset. I know I did and now that I've lost a little weight and feel more energetic, I don't want to stop making eating healthy overall my top priority. I forgot how important it was and how I feel when I do eat healthy. I even got back into walks this year, but living near enough to the gulf I know it will get hot and humid later this year and I won't want to go outside and walk. I already made a playlist for when it is too cold or too hot, so that I can dance around my room and get my exercise in. I definitely am focusing on being healthier overall and that is a beautiful thing.

Hey Hannah! I love the idea of monthly resolutions! As I started working again in mid-January, I decided to wake up every day at 7 (I was more of a 9AM girl 😅 waking up 30mn before work cause I really just needed to go from my bed to my office, basically), and thought I’d start with just a week. I wake up at 7, do my workout, do my meditation (since starting Julia’s class, last Sunday, so that’s still new to me - thank you for the recommendation for that I am loving it so much), and then still have time for self-care, skin care, even makeup sometimes... and it’s been amazing. I’ve been waking up early for almost 2 weeks now and I totally feel like I’m going to be able to keep this up, partly because I didn’t set an unrealistic goal for myself. Thanks for sharing!

I'm doing a similar thing re: monthly goals/resolutions as I've never been successful to sticking to previous resolutions for a whole year. My January was to not put off small and easy tasks longer than necessary, and as concrete examples the highest priorities were getting my inbox to zero (oh happy day to not have that little mocking red circle leering at me every day) and to rejuvenate my use of a daily planner to stay organized with to do tasks. Success so far! Feels great after a demoralizing 2020. February is to commit to my daily back/core strengthening exercises.

My accidental January resolution was doing yoga everyday (via the Yoga With Adriene 30 day yoga journey). I like the idea of recalibrating resolutions/goals monthly and focusing on what you need to and can reasonably achieve at that particular time. Seems more approachable than the traditional yearly resolution.

Me too! I’ve been doing Yoga with Adrienne, which I just sort-of fell into, and haven’t missed a day since I feel committed to the 30 days. I always feel better after yoga so it’s been great. The biggest surprise is how it’s firming up my body even though the sessions are short and not particularly strenuous. I like the monthly resolution idea, too. It seems like the opportunity for 12 individual successes instead of the stress of one grand goal that usually falls by the wayside.

💜 your braids. They are super cute & really suit u. It reminded me of when my Grandma use to braid my hair for school. She would do them super tight & weave ribbons in to loop the braids up. I love french braids! They look beautiful and keep your hair out of the way. I had to practice and really work on getting the technique down, but it was so worth it! My arms would get so tired 😫 and it was hard to keep track of the separate strands at first, but now it's so easy. I find it's easier with damp hair and when I take them out, my hair is really wavy.

I am generally trying to work on using up a bunch of art and craft supplies this year (hyper-fixation on new special interests means lots of half finished projects) So maybe I'll try a 30 day challenge for different crafts. I got the monk manual which is about gratitude and reflection as well as a space for daily life, it's actually a very you kind of item! My goal isn't to be the best at it but just to commit to sitting down with it and reflecting and gaining some I sight for myself into 2021. Next month was going to be learning Indian cooking but it will now be running, as 3 other friends have decided to run for charity so we have a little group to keep each other supported and accountable. I like how you plan to be flexible with goals also, a lot can change in a year.

I actually love the crease-y mess on your eyes, I live. Will try to replicate something like this on my own hooded eyes. It reminds me of my mom and my aunt... two bad-ass women who were young and wild and grunge-y in the 80s, who wear makeup all the time but own like one kohl pencil and one pan of taupe eye shadow that they just rub all over their wrinkly eyes, don't take their make-up off before bed and just roll on into another messy, beautiful day of doing whatever the fuck they want (and writing film scripts, and teaching the next generation, and tending your cannabis and tomatoes, and helping refugees, and babysitting your grandchild). I read once that one of the most common reasons people don’t reach their goals is because they don’t trust themselves. I don’t mean like “you just need to trust yourself and follow tour heart” trust, I mean like “I keep saying I’m going to do something and then I don’t do it so who knows if I’ll actually do this new thing I’m saying I’ll do.” In order to fix this, you have to build trust in yourself again. The guy said it’s easiest to start with small short term goals because they’re easier to complete, and then once you start those rolling, you can add more difficult goals on top. It’s cool to se that happen totally organically here with your Dry January so naturally leading into Skin Carey February and hearing you talk about the efficacy you feel and the accomplishment you feel. I’m currently doing the 75Hard challenge with a small group of my friends, which is a “mental toughness” challenge that involves drinking a gallon of water, 2 45 minute workouts, reading 10 pages of a non-fiction book, and following some sort of eating plan for 75 days. I started just a week ago but I can already feel a difference in my mental strength (and I’m seeing a small physical difference so woot!) and I’m excited to start layering new challenges on top of the 75Hard to boost its efficacy and my productivity within it.

Thanks for sharing - I’m determined to learn to French braid my too long quarantine hair! But mostly thanks for sharing the other stuff - the really real stuff. I began a project on Instagram #10minutesatatime that relates specifically to projects in my quilting hobby and business, but as you experienced is also bleeding into everything else. The commitment to and execution of that project brings empowerment and confidence for other changes every day. The biggest thing the #10minutesatatime project does is remind me that tiny steps add up and they add up quickly. The steps happen organically as I too remind myself that I don’t have to wait and I don’t have to be perfect. As you know, for me this is an entirely new outlook. I’m glad we’re learning together.

It's great! that's how I always do challenges - going for a month, giving myself a chance to change something, to see what is working for me.

I’m structuring my no buy the way your resolutions are panning out 💖 if you need any ideas, here’s my hypothetical list! 1.No sugar (for me specifically simple sugars in carbs and sugary drinks!) 2.No eating out (and trying conversely - many new recipes at home) 3.Exercising for ___m daily / doing hiit/yoga daily 4.month of outdoor time (hiking, camping, picnics) 5.month of visual arts 6. Reviewing content /watching TV and movies for review 7.daily uploads on KZbin/ increased output in whatever “work” is for you 8. One month of decluttering (completing the Kon Mari process) - Though y’all likely don’t have much to get rid of... 9. Daily journaling or mindfulness. I always consider myself someone who does this easily and more often than I really do. 10. Month of socializing (as an introvert this is hard!) 11. A meaningful Instagram post daily (personal or business) 12. Conquering minuscule yet important home improvement tasks

I’ve been doing monthly goals/resolutions for over a year now and I really like it. I’d recommend putting a recurring reminder in your phone for the last day of the month to review your goals and set your next goal so you don’t forget! Some of the goals I’ve done have been a no buy month, doing yoga every day (yoga with Adriene in January last year and this year), less screen time, creative projects etc. They aren’t always successful but it’s a good challenge and good way to try to build more positive habits

I did this last year. Monthly goals. I kind of lost my way mid year and decided to keep up on it again this year, but I've been setting weekly goals too. I use a planner to keep myself focused. Failing at monthly or weekly goals makes me feel bad too. But I think I fail to meet all my goals because I'm treating them like a guideline rather than a hard set rule. It may help if I wasn't trying to push myself to develop like 5 new habits or way of life at the same time I suppose. I decided as a yearly goal to buy only 12 makeup items. Gifts, gift cards and replacements not included. Replacements include eyeliner, mascara and brow products. I'm going to allow myself to replace things like a lip liner if I use it up even if I don't use all my lip liners. If I actually pan a product I'll feel that is a success and if I enjoy the product enough for it to be a staple to me it is a replacement. I started smoking again in 2020 so I decided rewards for quitting don't count either but when that time comes I may choose to reward myself with something other than makeup so that I don't feel like I'm cheating. I also set a goal to read 18 books in the year. For this month one of my main goals has been to drink 1 can of soda a day or less. This is one I've treated as a guideline rather than a rule. I think I've been adding too many weekly goals on top of it so I don't stay committed as well.

I love the idea of doing 12 resolutions. It seems much more sustainable and less pressure. I think I will pick this up in February (or before if I'm feeling motivated). I really need to get my sleep schedule back on track so I think I'll start with that.

That robe is stunning! I love the shorter sleeves and the beautiful pattern. Is it soft or a more stiff cotton? I remember the video where you showed the pajamas and I thought they were such lovely gifts, I’m so glad you were given one too❤️

I have the same one, and can say that it’s pretty stiff cotton. Although, from what I’ve heard it softens well over time. I line dry mine, so it’s still pretty stiff.
@HannahLouisePoston

it's seriously crunchy, slick cotton. I am sure it will soften over time, but I also love the crispness of it. It feels very high-end and brand new even when washed and dried in the drier.

I have also been doing dry January as a reset from holiday indulgences. I think it’s helped to get the holiday weight off and just decide how much you want to drink going forward. I’m going to do once a week until I get that jab!

The monthly resolution approach is how I’ve approached new year’s resolutions for the past six years and I find it to be really rewarding and achievable. I tend to map it out in January for the whole year. I keep some months the same and create new ones based on how I feel. (warning: I like alliteration 😁): January is financial jumpstart: Get my money right lol, submit public service forgiveness forms, check my credit, set financial goals for the year, prepare documents for tax season etc. February: Frugal February (low/ no spend month) March: Make Healthy Choices (reduce random snacking, reduce empty carbs, and eat fruits and veggies at every meal) April: Appreciation April (send kind words or gifts through text, email, and mail to family and friends) May: Mile a day May (walk outside for a mile every day) June: Join Oprah’s Book Club (read a book from her list) July: Journaling July (respond to a reflective journal prompt each day) August: Audiobook August (read via audiobook this month) September: Screen free September (no screens in bed or at meals) October: Organize October (organize closets, drawers, etc., the things you know need to be organized) November: Namaste November (meditate at least ten minutes each day) December: Good Deeds December (donate to a cause and make 12 things for others)

This might not be safe or possible where you live, but my New Years resolution is to go outside every day that the UK weather allows, even if it’s just a walk around the block and then going right back inside - it’s the showing up that’s important to me

I am generally very bad about resolutions, but in the beginning of last year I started a new habit of taking vitamin D daily, and it's become a great new habit over the past year. My short term resolutions are to do daily face massage that should help me relax and deal with my stress headache and to post my jewelry work to my long neglected Instagram.

I'm thinking thirty days of yoga would be great since so many of us are working from home, I also need to do a thirty days of WATER. My water consumption has been seriously lacking & I know this because I've been tracking it. Maybe thirty days of walks..perhaps closer to the spring. Thirty days of contact, contact a friend or loved one whom you don't live with every day. Thirty days of selfies, take one selfie in the same place every day for a month (Rachel Bloom did an entire year of toilet selfies last year.)

Hannah, your monthly resolutions reminded me of a memoir I read last year called “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin. Do you know of it? I enjoyed it. Over the course of the year she researched what makes people happy and then in a sort of experimental way tried them out for herself.

It's a great idea, that I'll most likely implement in February. I'll start with the relatively simple task of drinking more water, since I recently realised that I don't drink enough of it.
