Hannah, you need to go to Bangkok to truly see the definition of a Luxury shopping mall . Go Siam Paragon and you have some truly great, restaurant quality Thai food for about £2.50-£3, on level 5 you have European car dealers . The Gourmet supermarket there would make Waitrose look amateurish . Then you have Icon Siam across the river which takes it to a whole different level….

I’m old enough to remember the rise of the “ Shopping Malls” and the departure and desiccation of the American “Main Street”. Main Streets had once been the hub of any large or small town in America. After the malls were erected, Main Streets became unsafe to shop or stroll around. Back then, I was excited for all the Bling and glam of the malls, but saddened because all the individualized Mom and Pop shops eventually fell away…unable to compete with the “everything alike”…Chain store” brands. This “Mall epidemic” quickly travelled throughout every town in America. It made going on Vacation not as much fun because you were going in the same shops as at home…nothing felt exciting and new. Now, here in America, the tide has turned again, and the malls which gradually became too large to navigate about are becoming ghost haunts with whole sections with lights turned off, and left vacant. Now, the “Old Main Streets” are getting upticks with all the shops that once were in the malls….I guess everybody wants something new. I still prefer a “One of a kind type of shop”, and seek out Antique shops and quaint village shops for shopping, and dining. In the U.K. you are fortunate to have preserved your older buildings and Named shops, which Hannah I love having you take us in and explore…some much fun…By retrospect, You also have taken us in American Costco, which as you know looks the same in every country it inhabits…..down to the the items for sale brands, and item tags all written in english…regardless of country of origin…lol

Living in Notting Hill, I love coming to this shopping center when I want to do some shopping instead of going in Bond Street/Oxford Street (always too much busy). Westfield White City has everything! Any kind of shops. From Hollister to Ralph Lauren. And the ‘openness’ of the architecture gives me the right atmosphere to not get a headache even when it’s busier at the weekends. I don’t think it’s dying at all!

Thanks for the video and your bubbly narrative - nostalgic! During a 2011 trip to the UK, I was actually at the grand opening of this glorious Westfield mall with my British cousin, uncle and nephews. I remember asking my now-retired uncle whether the UK’s economy could actually support the scale of this mall, and he smiled and told me he wasn’t retiring in the UK anyway, so he didn’t care. I’m Aussie and so am familiar with Westfield malls in Oz - yes, Westfield is an Aussie company. I’m also American - so I take large malls for granted.

The reason rich people will buy at Dubai Mall but not Westfield is primarily split into two factors. First, Dubai Mall has aircon when outside is 45C, and second, Dubai has no New Bond Street, Jermyn Street, Burlington Arcade, standalone stores like Harrods, Fortnums and Harvey Nicks so if you want luxury you simply MUST go to the Mall.

It's not outrageous to pay for parking at a shopping mall within travel zone 2 of London: it is so well connected to local transport (with step-free access for parents with prams) that only people with serious mobility concerns should need to park there, and if you have a blue badge you get 4 hours parking for free. I used to live very locally to Westfield and the road traffic is awful almost 24 hours a day, so the mall was probably required to try and discourage shoppers from thinking that driving to the mall is a good option as part of the planning consent.

Thanks for your London-clips :) I am a pensioned Dutchman, with a long continental railway-history working in buffet- and restaurantcars. That all started with two years in on Euston- and King's Cross station. When I met my wife in 1982 back in Holland, first thing was going back to London a few more times. West End ? Yeah ! Hyde Park ? Yeah ! But eventually we started to explore the rest of the UK. Camping with tent, B&B or nice hotel. Discovering those little Mom & Pop places in villages where the best ever homemade pie, chowder or sandwich is served. We still ramble around all over. This year was Shropshire, Central Highlands is booked for next year. Haven't been back to London for 18 years now. But we pass through Amsterdam Centraal Station every week. Seeing the Eurostar to St. Pancras ready to leave or coming in. Those moments we have to restrain our self not to jump out of the train we are in and jump in it. ( Reason for us sitting in that train is babysitting :)) Perhaps , one day !

Hannah, I come frequently to London for my job (flight attendant) and our layover hotel used to be the Hilton, right across from Westfield on Holland Park Ave. Over the years I watched Westfield go from small and bright to huge and bright but always jam packed, especially on weekends. The first time I went I found a Jo Malone shop and fell in love! However, it got to where I would avoid Westfield, it was became so bad. People walking in groups (families, I’m guessing), hauling massive Primark bags and bumping into everyone because they don’t pay attention to what’s going on around them. I remember having to go to the Apple Store soon after Sephora opened and literally mobs of people everywhere. I got outside and could finally breathe!!!!! I think it’s a different crowd of people that shop there now and that’s why the high end shops have left. I’m sure it will morph into yet something else eventually.

I have delved into this vid continually on my Friday evening - sad bastard - but as an ex-Hammersmith born Londoner, there are some uncomfortable truths to be stated, even if you don't. If you build Europe's largest shopping centre in the centre of a progressively chav environment, what did you think would happen? I live 20 minutes away from one of the UK's top 10 tourist destinations - Bicester Village. It is what Westfield Village could have been, and it keeps growing (a future vid mayhap HR - direct train from Marylebone). Westfield will ultimately become a food and entertainment destination - it could thrive with this concept, but I doubt it. The Trocadero swiftly became a dive. The inner city is dying on the vine. Visit the powerhouses in Leeds & Manchester, smaller in size and 10 times more dynamic in ideas, energy and money. The London death star is rotting from within.......

Westfield was like a happy medium between affordable & quality, maybe some high-end brands like Gucci, LV etc... Nowadays, people rather just go to Knightsbridge which is around the corner, Mayfair, Bond Street, if they want luxury and if they want all the other stuff then Oxford Street still does the job with a lot more options. Not to mention the increase in shopping online, a lot of peoples favourite brands brick-and-mortar stores are gone and now they're exclusively online or have limited to stock in stores.

"Going shopping" is a dying tradition because people today don't want to waste their little and precious free time on this necessity. Sure, you need to buy food and clothing from time to time, but people prefer to do it as a secondary task. E.g. they just pop into a store that happens to be nearby anyway, or they just order it on their phone. People don't want to get dressed, jump in their car, drive halfway across town just to end up in an expensive environment to do something they could just as easily have done without getting up from the sofa, or next time they happen to drop their kids off at kindergarten, or during their lunch break across the street, or while they're already near some stores for whatever other reason.

We need to try and stop so many on line purchases or all our shops will be gone, just look at the high streets for evidence. Going out clothes shopping used to be fun with a friend ,maybe a lunch too. If the staff are trained to ask if you require help, why not just say "no thank you I'm fine",, and browse away without being rude? Keep smiling guys,Loving your Vlogs Hannah.

Recent footfall has probably taken a hit due to nearby roadworks since July- the centre depends heavily on it's proximity to the A40 for visitors. The high end stores like Tiffany's and Sephora do give off more of a 'Dubai Mall' feel to the place and certainly attract a large number of wealthy Arab visitors. That said, the majority of British shoppers cannot afford to shop here, at least on a regular basis, due to high inflation and recent economic worries. Nearby Brent Cross and slightly further afield, Bluewater and Lakeside appeal more to a mid-range budget, are more accessible by car, have chesper parking and always feel more busier and crowded than Westfield White City.

I worked in that area around 2016/2017 and I'm shocked to see no Searcy's and no House of Fraser!!! What! I'm glad they're filling it with more food places and more affordable shops. I'm from Sydney and in Sydney, we have Pitt Street Westfield that is choc full of designer shops (Chanel, Fendi, Tiffanies etc) - people shop there, it's always full. I think in London, new build places don't have that old-world charm - Canary Wharf is often dead on weekends too - is it a class thing? I don't know. I heard they want to turn the HSBC building into shops/food places, there is a video about that. This was really interesting, thank you for your updates, so good to see what's new in town.

I used to live in the area until recently, probably walked through it 3 times a week. I moved there towards the end of the pandemic and unsurprisingly it was a lot worse. Many empty units. It relies quite heavily on weekends because weekdays it is a lot quieter and much more pleasant frankly. They definitely favour the ground floor over the upper floor where many more empty units are. As for the Village, that is the only area that got worse from 2021-2024. A lot of brands that could qualify to go in there sit just outside I think on purpose. I've no idea what or if there is a plan for that section.

I worked in Notting Hill, across the road. This place is rammed on the weekends and after 3pm. Black Friday you cant move. Yes, car parking is paid, but it’s also connected well to rail, so a lot of people travel in from places like Wembley. These people are usually more lower class or young, so go for the high streets or just to hang out. This is why rich people have left. Stuart Weitzman went too. LV and Gucci used to have queues out the door.

All I remember about the village is it reminds me of the shops at canary wharf and was basically the easiest entrance to the main mall before the extension was built and it's now easier to enter from White City and Wood Lane than struggle through the crowds at the Bush's tube or overground stations. Obviously it depends on what side of Westfield you need to get too.

I like Westfield in White City, it is a little different to the bog standard shopping centre and also houses my favourite shop/restaurant Ichiba. When it first opened, Westfield was designed to be more like the American Mall experience, whilst the roof at Westfield reminds me of the O2 Outlet mall. Even mall management is changing with the House of Fraser group now buying a few shopping centres, they own several brands themselves such as Sports direct USC, Game and others. IKEA has brought the Churchill Centre in Brighton So the next decade of retail could be quite interesting with the Major retailers replacing financial institutions as landlords.

Have the rich left? Why do you suppose that would be, Hannah? Taxation? I have the feeling we are bridging some kind of transition periods. In Greater Vancouver we are seeing the beginning formations of what I believe is known as 15 minute cities. I prefer the more random historical remnants of organically growing old London communities you have already been showing us. They haven't been scrubbed of local flavour. So how has the micro needling worked out? I've heard of it but never personally tried. I find that the atmosphere in large shopping malls for some reason drains my energy. Maybe something to do with air handling systems and ionization? This Westfield Centre is certainly palatial. A good place to get your steps in when the weather is challenging? There is so much of interest I am learning from watching you tour the various retail scenarios in your great city. So much to talk about. Wonderful to see you again today, lovely Hannah! Take care!🌞👍❤🌹🦋🐝🐞🎈
