Another great video, Tim. The boat you show (Laughing Buda) was cruised for 18 years around the entire South Pacific/Asia by a retired military couple. They were knocked down in the Indian Ocean and the stove came off the gimbals and was thrown across the cabin, but the Buda quickly recovered. We had dinner with the couple who owned her while on the hard at Port Annapolis Marina. It was practically mint condition inside and simply awesome woodwork. We'd never have guessed it had spent so many years cruising.

@@Morrisfactor The Heglands were a wealth of sailing knowledge and they definitely took care of Laughing Buddha. Jim and Nancy helped us out after they passed the torch and we really appreciate it. We have done a pretty extensive refit of the vessel in the past 2 winter seasons to ensure the legacy of the Heglands and the future adventures of Laughing Buddha. We still keep it in Annapolis until we’re ready to exit the Bay and take on the Atlantic.

Very happy to see this boat and its sisters in this video. Well done video. So much of what Practical Sailor covers in evaluating materials and supplies needed for repairs, improvements, maintenance, and supplies is particularly relevant to blue water boaters and those of us doing more than a weekend from our home port. Often we're the ones doing the work. Regarding your request for what boats to feature next, I'd like to see more blue water boats, even those that are less 'blue water' ,such as the Pearson line including the 365. Again, thanks for the video!

But they sail like bricks. It's not a boat it's a hair shirt. Hydrodynamics from the 19th century. So slow they are dangerous. Good luck trying to sail off a lee shore in light wind

Now I understand why -- growing up racing 420s in Newport, RI -- I always got drawn in by the Hans Christians. Glowing in meticulously maintained brightwork or weathered and patina'd, they always set me to daydreaming and I didn't fully understand why. Now I do. I'd love to see a similar review of the Nauticat 43.

I would love to see the Kelly Peterson 44 and the Cal ll-46. Both avid circumnavigators. And still Circling the globe. The KP 44 was a break through performance cruiser of its day designed by the Americas cup winning designer Doug Peterson. Long waterline low profile, strongly built and I made 200 mile day a passages. The Cal also a breakthrough design. To day you buy new boats touting “deck salon”. Well my Cal had this in spades build in 1973 and STILL crossing oceans over 50 yrs later. A walk in engine room with work bench with drill press and a vice! 8kw gen, 20 gal/hr water maker, all pumps and a machinery IN the engine room. NO lockers or storage compartments with any tanks or pumps or any equipment. All truly available for storage. 270. Gal diesel! 220 water, 17’ of galley counter. Few boats if any today have this. Motors like a trawler with it’s 3:1 reduction and 26” prop yet, yes again made 200 mi days. Two unique “break through serious cruising boats that can move!

I would not risk it on a newer plastic vantastic made to out run weather. Also with out going full explorer can one place a larger motor on older boats? Great video

What size and type ... slow fat cats are not the best but there are some unorthodox global cats Like James Wharrams designs... Or the Dudley Dix plywood built designs. Our man here has done a nice tribute to James Wharram.. If you want to start a fight just say you like bridge deck catamarans 😂🧙🏻‍♂️🇬🇧 There are a number of channels that are building Aluminium live aboard cruising cats because they have had enough of coping with either GRP or helming boats from exposed aft helm's with only a Bimini to protect them against extreme heat , squalls and cold weather in the north. And trying to raise kids living in submarines in rocky or smelly anchorages and not being able to get inside reefs or dry out on a beech, sandbar or mud flat to scrape your hull or do maintenance checks and repairs. My personal favourite of the new bunch is the Windelo range. There's a new one on the way to the big Autumn boat show in the US. If you're looking for an older vessel there are some very tough older designs out there. There are also biplane rigged cats out there that simplify and improve sailing for the single or short handed sailor. One of the oldest and best known classic US boat builders and designers back around the 1900s actually built the first racing catamaran ..but it so upset the applecart he didn't get to develop the vessel beyond the experimental racing boat with no accommodation, a problem not solved till a French man and James Wharram got into the idea of building a cruising cat. By the time of creation Amaryllis, Nathaniel Herreshoff already had extensive engineering experience, but he had not yet designed sailing yachts. In 1876, Nathaniel created his first sailing boat, but what a sailboat!

Nobody mentions the Baba-Panda-Tashiba line designed by Bob Perry. While Bob has a wide variety of designs, I think he called the early Hans’s his “bastard children” since they were not his design but many folks commonly called them Perry Boats. After owning two production catamarans between my two Perry boat ownership, i find their shortcomings still make them more desirable for me, especially how tough they are. Am I the only one to go BACK to a monohull after catamaran ownership?

Isn't chord width important too? It seems like a single line of bolts on a narrow keel will transfer a lot of stress to the hull. I remember the I.O.R boats of the 70's and 80's in which the rule necessitated a keel width that had keel bolts in pairs, and I don't remember any keel failures.

The HC 41T is a beautiful boat. I think it's the prettiest boat HC made. But man! It's soooo heavy. It's weight puts it into the "motor-sailer" category, which is too bad. If it could lose about 15000 lbs (or more), then I would love to own one.
@SafwanFromMontreal
@SafwanFromMontreal 3 ай бұрын
@@qdav5 Don’t let that scare you. The weight seems gargantuan but it actually sails well even in fairly light winds. The boat featured in most of the video is mine and I speak from experience. We sailed it in 10knts winds at a comfortable 7knts without much effort. The rigidity of the mast and the geometry of the structure allows for a powerful sailplan. With the 150% genoa you get plenty of power under sails 🙂

How about a 40 footer that is more obtainable with modern conveniences, speed and efficiency. There are many beneteau's in that 40 foot range that are seaworthy cruisers that make ocean crossings every year. One that intrigues me is the Beneteau 393. Practical Sailor's text review describes it as an "honest boat". A video of such a boat which is going for literally a third of the price of a T41. I would like to know how this class of boat has been wearing for the last 20 years. There are certainly a lot more of them out there for sale.

A heavy displacement double endet with primitive keel and rudder design is NOT SAFE. Its a motorsailor that will have problems sailing out of trouble if the engine is out of action. I also do not find them comfortable. By all means buy one if you just like the way they look - and I do - but do not buy a HC or similar boat bevsuse you think its safe. The reality is that it is less safe than a sailing boat - which a HC is not.
@SafwanFromMontreal
@SafwanFromMontreal 3 ай бұрын
@@deerfootnz I beg to differ. But I can’t fault you for thinking that. The HC 41 featured belongs to me and I can tell you she sails surprisingly well despite the weight and old school hull plan. We had the best riggers in Annapolis and sesoned cruisers completely stunned at her performance under sails. To tell you the truth, we were surprised too. We expected it to be more effort to move her in light winds. And she really sings when we hit 20-30knts. Certainly not a race horse, but she tracks with comfort in seas that would rattle most production coastal cruisers. Laughing Buddha already crossed most of earth’s oceans and is set to do it again in the future hopefully.

@pamelawaring6836 3 ай бұрын
There's a difference between "primitive" and "traditional" keel and rudder designs... the traditional design values of HCs are based upon a history of hundreds of years of working sail craft, Norwegian sailing lifeboats, etc, and as such are suited to certain tasks and conditions. The Dashew's Sundeer is an awesome and impressive passage-maker, but for us, we find our HC33 at half the size suits our needs very well - sea-kindly, comfortable, massive stowage, a great live-aboard in a small package with world-voyaging capability. Even with the availability of modern weather routing, global positioning and advanced communications opening up the option of voyaging in lighter, faster craft than ever before, we still appreciate the HC's ability to hove to and self-tend in heavy weather when the crew are needing respite, not to mention the joy of "being on rails" when sailing in a variety of conditions. We were also surprised by the HC33's ability to make 50% of apparent wind speed in very light winds. Clawing off a lee shore isn't an ideal situation for any skipper and crew to place themselves in, but there are also many other safety considerations, and for us with our own personal experiences over the last 50 years we like the bullet-proof HC hull that can withstand bouncing over a reef in a storm with only scratches to show for it. Beyond personal preferences, the important thing is "each to their own", and there are as many opinions as there are boats; no single-minded camp is likely to change its mind - or sell the boat they love and buy another type - based upon differences of opinion in KZbin's comments section. Better to enjoy the vessel type you have chosen for what it means to you :)
