what a great little dome, made for less than 2,500, and in just 17 days (not even full days) - hans talks about the construction, and how comfortable it is to sleep in his handbuilt dome...you can do it too! from these or other materials.

That Cocoon as you call it in a cyclone area will withstand it , most houses are flattened in gale force winds so in my opinion that's is a smart way to go with a dome shaped structure as strong winds will simply go around it rather than through it.

@@fishmut I often wonder why people who live in "Hurricane Alley" keep re-building the same structures instead of adapting them to the climate. Any type of dome-shaped house or even round like a Medieval tower or a yurt, would resist the high velocity and swirling winds. When you see the devastation afterwards, you can't help wonder why nobody's building at least one geodesic dome for instance as a test and if it succeeded then the local population would adopt it.

@@Khamomil theyve been tested they stand up well to it except one got a hole smashed in the wall from a car flung at it in a twister

@@Khamomil I 100% agree with you , the only other issue i could see that might be a problem here is in cyclonic areas especially in Australia is the rain depression that comes with cyclones so choosing this type of home you would want to be definitely on high ground and not in the low lands, as it might not be the winds you have to worry about but the floods.

Just a thought - is there a possibility of carbon monoxide buildup if the stove does get used? This is a great project! I want to do something with similar materials, as a houseboat.

It scares me a bit to have a huge monolithic concrete structure adrift on the water, with no means of maneuvering it. It would also need a huge crane to get it in and out of the water. But if the floating platform and house were made up of smaller blocks that could be carried individually by one person, and quickly assembled on the water, it might be more manageable.

It's an idea I'm studying. In the video I doubt that the material is the usual concrete made with Portand cement. There are alternatives which are much lighter, including cellular concrete which substitutes in part a foaming agent that creates air bubbles in the mass. Other mixes exist, with lime and hemp hurds, or with clay mixed with a high proportion of straw. All these make the building a lot lighter which is important in a floating structure. I think the half-sphere can be prefabbed and everything put togethrr onsite rapidly with a very small crew. There only needs to be compliance with fluvial or maritime law for the structure to be allowed on public property. But if you own a pond or a lake, there should be no problem except for the waste water treatment. The structure could be placed atop a platform that is sufficiently bigger than it, to allow for a terrace and the equipment of a motor and everything that goes with it. Or the platform could be pushed or pulled by a tug boat hired for the occasion, or owned by the inhabitant and kept in a garage, in order to save on marina fees. Also if several such platform exist the tug could be owned in common.

The floating base can definitely made of thick, solid Portland ferrocement, as it resists water and floats very well. The house superstructure, on the other hand, could be made of anything, probably the lighter the better, but ferrocement is still a good option. There is one thing, though, I read an old book about Dome Homes, and while the idea was popular in the early 70's, even the authors of the book admitted that concrete domes can feel oppressive to live in.

Ferrocement hulls cost A LOT $$$ if you have them made by a specialist who has the space and the equipment to make them and deliver them, and you can't cut corners on quality with that thing. There are cheaper ways of floating. What the cement hull does is give you a living space under the surface.

Nothing can be worse than unsafe and hazard! When is a bad temperature changing, lack of air circulation, pure material combination based on their thermal/physical characteristics = health, life, money, time, and labor are on fire! All can be useless and a waist! Who can enjoy of smelling and inhaling a hazard? I respect your desire and energy, but cannot accept the result!
