When I saw the Troll in the movie first time, I instantly distinguished it was animatronic. Because it looked too 'real' to be CGI. This is the closest you'll get to reality. CGI still needs more advancements to get to Anmt level.

One of the reasons I love this movie is because they knew where to use CGI and where animatronics (was it the right term?) and make-up. I thought those effects were almost dead by the 2010s so it's nice to see some studios still using them rather than having fake cartoons.

CG is an excellent tool that when used correctly. By that I mean that if it draws you further into the story instead of pulling you out of it, it is a perfectly viable story enhancer.

The most realistic head I ever saw. When I saw this movie I thought that it whas a ordinairy guy with yust some 3D makeup on his face here and there. This worked that well because the eyes are looking really real and the eyelids looked authentic too

You would be surprised then if I told you that in many ways CGI is cheaper then practical, which is a sad truth. The reason why JJ Abrams can afford to do so much practical stuff for the new Star Wars is because Disney have sparred no expenses on that one.

We need to find a balance between CGI and practical effects. The audience sense and prefer practical effects. The 7th art is always evolving, in motion! @mikeelizalde
@mikeelizalde 8 жыл бұрын
+mark d Hi Mark, That's a deep subject- there is no simple answer to it so I'll give you the short version. Designing animatronics is one of the disciplines in what we do that requires experience, or at least a thorough knowledge in and of all the other disciplines such as illustration, sculpture, mold making, artificial skin design, etc., etc. In addition to that knowledge, you would need to learn how to design in a 3D CAD (computer aided design) program like SolidWorks, Inventor, Autocad, or some other compatible software. You also need machining skills and in this day and age, a thorough understanding of CNC machining principles and 3D printing. This is a field that requires a very large degree of experience. I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm just giving you the facts about creating at this level. Now, here's the good news, every time you experiment with a mechanism or a mechanical design that you want to try out, you can do it with popsicle sticks and hot glue. These types of efforts will help you to form a foundation to pursue your dreams. We all started somewhere and once you start, you'll probably never look back. GO to your hobby store and ask a lot of questions about servos and R/C systems. Take a sculpting class from a local artist. Read as much as you can about technical developments in the areas of robotics and electronics. It's a long road to becoming an accomplished designer but every step of the way is well worth the effort. Good luck on your quest!

Not all CGI is "stupid" but I do understand your frustration over the fact that it is overused while completely overlooking the power of practical effects, not just on the audience, but on the actors on set. I believe that the more tools you use to create an effect, the better that effect will be. The real issue is whether the director is intelligent enough to make the right choices to tell the story and whether the producer is smart enough not to marginalize his/her effects budgets.

There are two schools of thought on this. Some people prefer CG and other think practical effects simply look better. You can take bad examples of either and hold them up to show what a mistake it is to use either one, and there are plenty of bad examples out there, or you can look at the best either dixscipline has to offer and judge on the strengths, rather than the weaknesses. The smart film maker makes intelligent choices using both technologies to assist in telling the story seamlessly.

Seriuosly though, take a look at the credits on any film that features CG and practical effects. The practical effects crew seldom exceeds 30 names while the CG folks eat a third of the crawl. Where are you getting your information? Are you qualified to make that statement? We're interested in facts, not conjecture. If you are trying to promote CG, you are a very poor advocate.

There are many bad examples of both practical and digital effects out there and both should be assessed on a case-by-case basis. As I mentioned in my reply to 'Snot Nose', the best effects use a combination of outstanding examples of all of the available tools at the artists' disposal.

Thank you for your comment. This approach is actually cheaper than CG. Just take a look at the end crawl on any movie and you'll see how overwhelming the CG artist lists are compared to ours.

I think that people who do special effects like this are awesome. We've come a long way from the days of Ray Harryhausen's stop shoot method but the animatronics of today allow so much creativity. Well done on a tremendous job.
