Part 2 of a series of 2 videos of my restoration of a classic Hansom racing bike from the early 90’s. These bicycles were manufactured in South Africa and were very popular due to the reasonable pricing in comparison to their Italian counterparts. They were affectionately known as “A Babalegi Express”, named after the area where the factory was situated.

The Hansom is handsome. Preserving the patina is a nice touch, keep them on the road. I like seeing bikes from around the world.

Interesting to see the oval shaped Biopace chainrings. Those chainrings are very rare now.

gang208 indeed but it's amazing how many vintages are still available with them fitted. Probably 70% of the bikes I've restored have been running Biopace rings.

I also got a Hansom from a collegue, some time ago. It is unbelievable how many km's that old casettes and chains could take. I am sure it still has it's original parts on, and I have also ridden it for at least 10 000km. It still hasnt worn down, and it has never skipped. Don't know how that is possible, comparing to todays shimano stuff.

Herman Dormehl I think back in the day they weren't overly concerned about weight on the cassettes so just used hardened steel as opposed to the light weight alloys of today. You right though, those old cassettes were bomb proof 😄
