It's silly that, of all the bubblegum '90s songs, this (and Hanson in general as a band) is the one everyone decided it was "cool" to hate on... like, jeez, Taylor wrote the lyrics for the verses (which are about the fleeting nature of life and holding on to the things that matter most to you) when he was all of 11 or 12 years old, and they'd had the idea for the chorus even years before that! If it was a song written by adults specifically to be sung by kids to sound "cutesy", sure, then I could maybe get the hate, but it was genuinely three young kids who were inspired by early rock 'n' roll, motown, and doowop, being really talented and making their own music... nothing at all worth mocking about that! And obviously they only got better and better over time, but it's not even like MMMBop *is* a bad song... the Middle of Nowhere version was honestly overproduced imo, but this is the original version they recorded independently in 1996, and it's beautiful and very Jackson 5-esque :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jF60g2hqrc-hbtE

As far as I can tell, the lyrics of this song are about how there might be people who pretend they care about you, but then when you get older (and start losing your hair....), they disappear in a flash. Or, as the Hanson boys put it, in an mmm-bop. And it's also about how you can never really tell beforehand who will be the people who stick around, and who will be the people where the relationship just withers and dies. I believe that this is also what "plant a rose, plant a bunch and find out which one grows, it's a secret no one knows" was about: the roses are friendships, and no one knows the secret of which friendships will continue to grow until the end, and which ones will just refuse to keep growing at some point or another. Really, though, the main point of this song is to not think about the lyrics too much and just have fun listening to a song. Just for a change, you know?

The whole thing is more than just a silly pop song. Really great harmonies and let's remember at the time they were children. They did a really good job...that hook is ridiculous just like a pop song should be. I think they also used to do bits of it without heir instruments during interviews and appearances which is always more telling of talent. No hiding.

These kids always got picked on because they were commercial, but the song is so dang catchy( chrous wise). By the way they're three brothers the lead singer's name is Taylor. The song was actually a background part to a different song. As they tried to develop the song they were inspired to be like their heroes *The Beach Boys* trying to be Doo-Wop, well they tried anyway. This song did leave a bad taste in some people's ears and they weren't really explored to see if they had true potential ( I myself unfortunately were one of the people that quickly dismissed them). Oh by the way the song is about holding to things that really matters in life. Looking forward for your next reaction as always 🙂!

Lol many people have made that mistake about the lead singer (Taylor or Jordan Taylor Hanson) actually all of them 😂 but Taylor the most. This was when Taylor was 14, the oldest, Isaac (guitarist) was16, and the youngest Zac (drums) was 11. When they started recording the album this somg is from Taylor's voice had started changing, you can hear his voice crack in mmmbop a couple time. By the end of the album His voice is noticably lower by the end of the album. What made me a fan was the fact that they write and compose their own music and also produce themselves and have their own label called 3CG. They also now make a beer called MMMHops. You dont hear much about them anymore, they are all married with kids (BIG family), the brothers are still a band and make music and tour but they are more indie artists now. Kinda one of those you have to be a die hard fan to know what they are up to.

I don't hold it against you that you thought they were girls (hm... they were a bit metrosexual - esp Tay - before that word even existed and before it got trendy and cool). They got a lot of s*** bc of it (for whatever reason), esp for their long hair. Which is kinda funny bc Kurt Cobain (who died just 3 years before they got famous) looked like an older version of Tay, Silverchair's Daniel Jones was kinda the same type of guy. I love Tay, his current look (more Cali surfer boy style, just a bit more rugged) is great (he was even still handsone during his awful Hipster beard phase). But I will never forget running into a 20-ish Tay (around 2004) in the cathedral in Cologne. He still had his long, (naturally) blond hair then. He was wearing it in a messy ponytail, with strands of his hair falling into his face. Tay stood in that dark cathedral, right in front of tons of huge lit candles. It sounds kitschy but he looked like an angel. I was totally stunned (although I had attended a few of their concerts already and had met him before), he just looked... flawlessly handsome. He is one of the most talented pianists/keyboarders and musicians I know, he renders me speechless every single time when I see them live. I just adore that guy...

What I don't understand is what is it you don't understand? It is a catchy pop song. It's a video from when video was everything. It features 3 cute brothers with good harmonies. Why are you so speechless?

I was only 3 years old at the time when the song was out. I certainly remember the song very well, probably shows how massive it was at the time

My friend, watch the song with the lyrics... I guarantee you will love the song and agree with it!! It's the fact that kids are singing this absolute truth song that makes people miss the meaning, and truth hidden in the lyrics. Great song.

This was Hanson's (3 brothers) breakthrough hit single (they wrote that song by themselves btw, like they did with almost every one of their songs - and even with the few exceptions they always were at least co-writing them) in 1997. That song (a classic 90ies Pop song and super catchy at that) was #1 in the Billboard and other charts for weeks - in the US and around the world. The song and their debut album got them 2 Grammy nominations. Until this day Zac Hanson (who was 12 then) holds the record for youngest songwriter ever nominated for a Grammy (second is Michael Jackson I think). MMMBop actually has a really deep meaning. It's about real friendship (and loyality). And how hard it is to see who you can really count on, who is a real (lifetime) friend, staying with you and being at your side even during the worst times in your life and in your darkest hour (and even when you are getting old). And who is just a good-weather-"friend" - who will be gone in the blink of an eye (in an MMMBop) as soon as it gets a bit rocky. The guys are fantastic, still singing - with absolutely perfect harmonies - and performing 25 years later. Music is their life, their passion, it's in their blood - the grew up with lots of Motown songs that influenced them a lot. They now have their own record company and studio. Their old record company tried to put them into a box, trying to pressure them to go fully mainstream - or better: commercial (concentrating on classic generic Pop music only) - and to alter their music (to make it superficial and to sound exactly like every other 90ies boyband) so they could cater to a huge mainstream crowd. For money making purposes only, they only saw them as cash cows and tried to sell them out (talking all theie creative freedom from them). The guys didn't have any of it, they didn't give in. But they were forced to go indie at a very young age, taking one of the greatest risks for any musician. And they suceeded thanks to their loyal fanbase that is still there 25 years later. You should listen to their acoustic live version of MMMBop (from 2016 od 2017 I think). It's a bit more mature, a little less pop-ish. But still absolutely amazing.

I've seen this so many times. They are all boys. LMAO This is one reason they were trashed when they were young.Pretty boys get trashed when butch men think they are girls only to find out it's a boy lol And the first viersion of this song was not so upbeat. You need to hear the the first version.
