During a visit to Helgelandsmoen in the summer of 1901, Johannes Hanssen heard the signal of the Valdres battalion (later the West Oppland Infantry Regiment no. 6). The battalion did not have its own march at that time, Hanssen therefore wrote "Valdres march". The march was built from the battalion's familiar signal and a hall inspired by a beat, this was also heard at Helgelandsmoen. In 1904, the 30-year-old Johannes Hanssen had "Valdres-March" performed for the first time with the 2nd Brigade's music corps, where he himself played tenor horn. Before World War II, the march had also been released for piano, and Hanssen had written an arrangement for the Radio Orchestra, the forerunner of the Broadcasting Orchestra. In 1937, the march was made available to everyone by being published by Norsk Musikkforlag. In 1947 he arranged the large symphony orchestra and in 1954 Øivin Fjeldstad took the march on a large orchestral tour in the USA. Thus, it was ensured international success. Today's version for corps was written by Johannes Hanssen in 1954, a full 50 years after the march was performed for the first time. Johannes Hanssen conducted the final version with the Armed Forces Staff Music Corps in May 1955. (Translated from Norwegian Wikipedia)

I've played this march (euphonium section) with two different community bands of widely varying abilities. Preparing to play again for an upcoming concert and wanted to refresh myself as to how it SHOULD sound! Marvelous job, Marines!

To Splodinate Kabloominate: It's not showing off if you can do it. Virtually every good player I've ever met doubles at the very least. Yourself included, I would guess. Besides, instrument technicians have to play every instrument they can reasonably expect to repair. I just tell multiple instrument players, "The good ones always double."

Sounds like the eefer is playing the little clarinet obliggato by itself (normally the 1sts are also playing this)....you can hear its tone color in the lower middle register.

Elise Curran We played this from a set of Norwegian parts, not the US edition arranged by Glenn Cliff Bainum. The trumpet soloist was Rick Lehman, playing an Eb cornet, and the clarinet soloist was John Barclay, playing in Eb clarinet.

For some reason, I feel that the beginning trumpet solo could definitely played more march like and triumphantly. Other than that, this an amazing recording.
