Hanukkah is about more than latkes and dreidels. What new facts did you learn about the history of this holiday?

National Geographic: I learnt that is a Jewish tradition and nothing more.If they only could read with understanding the horrors that await them in the book of Isaiah not to mention the other major and minor prophets they would repent in sackcloth and ashes. But the vast majority will not. Hanukkah is not a Levitical command. Mark 7:9 (KJV) And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. We can find a New Testament account of this celebration in John 10:22, when Jesus was present for this festival. His example shows us that it is not wrong to take part in certain celebrations if those celebrations do not have a pagan origin and do not violate God’s laws. Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and July 4th would be examples.Originally, the Jews celebrated Hanukkah as a national holiday, not a religious one. However, the way in which it is celebrated today has become similar to the Christmas celebration, since some of the Christmas customs have been adopted. Some may consider the expression “Father of lights” (Jms. 1:17) to be related to this celebration, but Hanukkah has no connection to this scripture.

I learnt from the video that Jews celebrate success against the odds, belonging and the light of hope on this day. I learnt from the comments under the video that antisemitism, arrogance, bigotry and cynicism is still very much present in the world, so Hanukkah is still very much needed.
