In the Canadian Army, we used to have an annual fitness test that involved a 13km ruck march. I ran a few of these tests within a couple of days immediately after buying a new pair of Alaskas. I gave them zero break-in time and had no issues at all. I have another set of Hanwags (not sure what they are. They're like Alaskas but taller and with a thicker sole and solid full shank) that I've owned since early 2009. Going on SIXTEEN years old and they're still in great condition!

I’m a forester and wear boots five days a week and weekends during the hunting season. I rotate Lowa Tibet and Hanwag trapper boots. The attention to detail is superb in both. I typically blow out the midsole before any other part of the boot fails, but this after many years of continuous use. With proper boot care, no way a weekend warrior or the average hunter will wear out a pair of these boots. The German made boots have a wider last (think frame) which fits me better. My break in starts in the house for a week or so when testing out a new pair of stiff boots. My advice: spend the money initially and by the best pair of leather boots, make sure stitching is in back of the boot ( important for longevity and waterproofing) and make sure of fit!

I did a mistake, and got my Hanwag Tatra II a size bigger. I put a new more comfortable insole in them and got a pair of thick socks, that kind of fixed the problem. I only felt them bigger once, that I had the laces a bit loose. After than, they seem to work ok. Should I continue using them or am I going to have troubles, maybe an accident in a long hike? You seem way more experienced than me, I would really appriciate your opinion. Thanks in advance. Happy new year!

@@greekveteran2715 I believe you have already solved the issue: an insole to make sure your heel is properly seated in the boot heel counter and arch support for comfort. Thicker socks also will help. Lace the boots securely so you don’t have slippage (think blisters).

Definitely agree on the midsoles, I guess it's hard to formulate a shock absorbing layer that ages really well. My brother and I bought the same great model of Meindls and after I think ten years great service both pairs died almost instantly when the midsoles completely fell apart, in my case over the course of barely 3km in the Welsh hills. I got back to town with the soles lashed on by the laces. Superb boots for my formative years of wilderness travel though!

How would you say the Tatra II and Alaskan fair in day to day use, from hiking to walking on concrete?
@GOHUNT
@GOHUNT 4 ай бұрын
The Tatra II is a super solid boot. With it being 3 flex, I think this would make a great boot for day-to-day use. With a Gore-Tex lining and Vibram sole these boots would be comfortable and still be able to combat the elements. The Alaska is one of our best selling all leather boots. These come in a 4 flex. So they have a stiffer sole. There are some benefits to having a stiffer sole such as less fatigue and joint pain. But they could be too stiff for walking on concrete all day. With a Vibram sole and heel shock absorption these boots could be a solid option as well. If it were me, I would lean more towards the Tatra II for day-to-day use.

I buy a pair of trapper tops every season to guide in the Yukon. Iv had all the brands but they fit my foot the best. Iv never had to break in a pair either I just put them on first day and away ago for 90 Days straight in the mountains hiring sheep moose caribou and grizzly. I love them boots. Never had an issue other then They shrink and the toe box gets to tight. That’s why I buy a pair every season.

How do they hold up in winter, I notice you mention that there isn’t insulation. Im looking for backcountry , Alaska hiking serious Terrain. What do you recommend ?
@GOHUNT
@GOHUNT 2 жыл бұрын
Trail here: It depends on the model of the Hanwag boots you are considering. The Trapper Top GTX is one of the burliest, hard wearing boots out there, and it is insulated. It's stiff soled, all leather, and would be a great option for long term wear and tear in technical terrain. Another couple options if you are looking for insulated boots, the Yukon and Sirius II. The Sirius is also stiff soled and heavy duty, but is a tad shorter than the trapper. The Yukon would be the most comfortable of these out of the box, and is a nice option for late season hiking and hunting. All of those I would suggest are capable in demanding late season cold weather situations. My personal pick would likely be the Yukon, and perhaps the Trapper if you like a taller stiffer sole boot.

@@GOHUNT Thanks for the information. I feel I spend so much on a boot and it falls apart. My last boot Asolo fell apart in the beginning of the Harding ice filed. That was not a fun situation. Planning on hiking Katahdin Knife edge in October. Boulders , rock, steep. Need a hardy boot that not Linley supports but has grip.

I seem to have really touchy feet when it comes to boots. I also have plantar fasciitis. My feet seem to run pretty warm. I’m looking for a boot for my New Mexico January mule deer and javelina hunts. Maybe some Barbary sheep. Which one of these would be recommended. I had kind of settled on Lowa Tibet but they’re out of stock. Tatra 2 maybe. Thanks

I wish hanwag would make all these boots without the goretex liner. Goretex just makes you sweat more, gets you wet from the inside and then will take forever to dry. My brother does forest firefighting often getting wet because they have to land in marshes behind the fires. Once goretex boots get drenched you are pooched for a week or more. It's more òf a harm than benefit.

I had a pair of Lowa Tibets brand new which are pretty much identical to the Hanwag Alaska. They are solid af so went for a quick walk down the sidewalk to break then in. I got about 200 feet before the midsole exploded. Googled it. Its called hydrolysis. What a joke. These boots are bomb proof except literally disintergrate if you don't constantly use them or keep them in to dry or humid of an environment. No why would anyone who knows bother. Just go with norwegian welted boots. They don't disintegrate. So disapointing
