Highlights of Sugar Ray Leonard's legendary clash with the great "Hands of Stone" Roberto Duran in their 2nd fight.
TikTok: / hanzagod_1
Sugar Ray Leonard - Often regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Leonard competed professionally between 1977 and 1997, winning world titles in five weight classes; the lineal championship in three weight classes. The fight in which this video is showcasing is the highly controversial "No Mas" fight in New Orleans. In the closing seconds of the eighth round, Durán turned his back to Leonard and quit, saying to referee Octavio Meyran, "No Más" (English: "No more"). Leonard was the winner by a technical knockout at 2:44 of round eight, regaining the WBC Welterweight Championship.

Sugar Ray Leonard at his absolute best! This is one of his greatest performances as he learned from his mistakes in the Brawl in Montreal and used his superior speed / movement to outbox and befuddle Duran. 2 of the greatest of all time but on this night Leonard was tactically perfect and completely dominated a P4P legend. www.patreon.com/haNZAgod

Leonard won this fight as soon as the first fight finished... he got the quick rematch clause, k owing Duran parties and balloned - I think Sugar Ray's brother gave him the idea of taunting Duran... (*which Duran did to him in the first fight - by hurling insults at Sugar Ray's wife*) (Think Clubber Lang) They're both amazing... Duran is my favourite- but I love Sugar Ray... he could bang, move, high ring IQ, a true warrior

He broke Duran DOWN..mentally as well as physically! Duran had gone EIGHT YEARS without a loss and had won over FIFTY FIGHTS IN A ROW until Ray beat him, so this was a historic accomplishment. I saw the fight live (on pay per view) back in 1980 and when Duran said those famous words “no mas” and quit, the crowd was in total disbelief. That (along with his first fight with Thomas Hearns) was Sugar Ray’s greatest fight. I believe that he was the greatest welterweight of all time!

@patrickbrowne4606
@patrickbrowne4606 6 ай бұрын
@@jalenikezeue4114 Duran freaked out! Going into this fight, he had won over FIFTY FIGHTS IN A ROW.. his last loss was a close decision back in ‘72 against Estaban Dejesus (who would go on to win the WBC lightweight title). Duran knocked Dejesus out twice in rematches and moved up to the welterweight division and defeated Leanord to become champion. BUT in that REMATCH, Sugar Ray took command of the fight from the beginning and Duran, in my opinion, got scared and quit..it’s just that simple. A lot of people have tried to analyze why Duran quit for the last 40 years, but the answer is obvious. Why do most fighters quit a battle? Fear! He was getting beat and he knew (from their first contest) that Leanord was going to be even stronger in the later rounds. He wasn’t going to get tired. If this fight had continued I believe Duran was going to get knocked out somewhere in the last 5 rounds and I believe that Duran knew that as well!

Sugar Ray Leonard’s skill was EXTRAORDINARY…His mobility, evasiveness , footwork, broken rhythm and ability to see openings fast and to go through them was unmatched…This was the ‘No mas ‘ (no more) fight with Duran. Duran was a really aggressive animal rugged fighter but Sugar Ray just never let him use it…He outpointed him in skill and in the end just frustrated Duran to the point of driving him mad to quit because he was making him look so silly in missing that it was humiliating for him. Leonard messed with him psychologically as well as tactically.

@@hanzagod Well, they focused on Roberto Duran quitting and overlooked Sugar Rays SKILL….I mean like with Ali Sugar Ray came from an era when boxing was a real REFINED ART …It wasn’t about just all power and bluster…It was about scientific tactics,,,Not getting hit and taking care of business. Controlling range so you could hit them but they couldn’t hit you….Making TIMING more important than reach,,, Footwork to get you to the target fast or out of the line of fire…The ability to read your opponents INTENT fast and intercept first like Bruce Lee in JKD. Sugar Ray Leonard had all these things and more. And ANGELO brought out his talents like he did with ALI…

Leonard had 2 things really working for him in the rematch. 1) The ring was HUGE--21 X 21--(that's a VERY large ring--perfect for Sugar Ray to utilize his speed and movement.) 2) Duran blew up to almost 200 lbs. after the first fight and had about 2 and 1/2 months to get down to 147, which HAD to have sapped a lot of his energy. No excuses though--Leonard stayed in top shape--Duran let himself go--that's entirely on him and his management (or lack thereof.)

@2:37 notice how frustrated Duran got with the mastery-level footwork of Leonard. Duran was reacting the entire fight. Letting Sugar Ray Leonard dictate the pace but also the flow, of the entire orchestration. He had no answer for Leonard's flow. Instead of initiating from time to time, Duran kept following, being hypnotized by Leonard's dancing and prancing that work ever so sweetly to his advantage. Duran had a hard time cutting off the ring because he s so "flat-footed". The "jack-Dempsey-Shuffle" would have done wonders against Sugar Ray Leonard. It' the only way to time it properly, and cut off the ring on such a crafty dancer like Sugar Ray Leonard. Thank you for ALL the uploads throughout the years, it has been very entertaining. You pick the perfect clips too. I appreciate you. One Love! Peace be with you.

Wow! I just watched this exact match only 9+ hours ago. I got lucky and found a bunch of my old boxing tapes and this was ONE of the fights. Sugar Ray Leonard definitely put on a masterclass to such a high degree, of The Sweet Science, that he made The Boxing Legend known as Roberto Duran aka "Hands of Stone" quit. Quite literally not only on the ring, but for good. This was right before he announced his retirement. But let us not forget that the legend "Manos de Piedra" stated, "he (*as in Sugar Ray Leonard) needs to move from this weight. although my body did not want to move the way I want it to move, I did not feel Sugar Ray Leonard as strong. He didnt feel like much of a threat at this weight class. He needs to move up." (*paraphrasing, but this is the just of what he said in the locker room in an interview, following this fight. I am fortunate enough to have the interview in my copy f this fight. ONE day soon, I will post it.

I'm so proud to say that I got to meet my all time favorite celebrity/sports star on a few occasions throughout the years. He came to my hometown of Albuquerque, NM right before the Hearns fight I believe, when I was just 16. I knew what hotel he was staying at, and decided to try a phone call. It's so unbelievable that his wife at the time, Juanita, answered the phone and was so nice, that she actually put him on. He was extremely nice to me, even though I was bothering him in his private time. Not many superstars would actually even get on the phone. But he talked to me for about 15 minutes and invited me to a gym he was going to be at later that day, but unfortunately I didn't have any transportation. But I did finally meet him a couple other times in the late 80s and early 90s. Such a nice, kind man, when he could have just said hi and bye really quick. I used to love watching Sugar Ray Leonard piss off contenders with his awesome use of the ring. His foot shuffles. And Ali windmill! Sugar Ray Leonard was my favorite fighter of all time until Mike Tyson.

This was the rematch after Roberto Duran beat sugar ray. It came out later that Roberto hurt his hand and was partying and came into the fight overweight. So i wouldnt exactly call it a master class. But the late 70s and into the eighties was definitely a golden era in boxing.

I saw him fight Javier Muniz in New Haven in 1978. Sat through 3 hours of boring preliminary fights then Ray knocked him out in 2:45 of 1st round. The sound of his gloves hitting Muniz sounded like a drum roll.

Reading the comments, it seems as though everyone has forgotten the first Duran vs. Lenard fight. In my opinion, that was the master class.

Masterclass is the wrong title for the first fight. It was a brilliant and close fight between 2 all time greats. This here was total domination by Leonard thus being a masterclass.

I think that's a bit of a myth to be honest. Duran was the rightful winner of the first fight but it wasn't a dominant performance or an easy victory for him, Leonard absolutely pushed him to the limit and it was a close one.
