Sonny Liston - Was an American professional boxer who competed from 1953 to 1970. A dominant contender of his era, he became the world heavyweight champion in 1962 after knocking out Floyd Patterson in the first round, repeating the knockout the following year in defense of the title; in the latter fight he also became the inaugural WBC heavyweight champion. Liston was particularly known for his toughness, formidable punching power, long reach, and intimidating appearance.

Sonny liston was a beast of a man one of the hardest guys to walk the earth. He had police battons snapped over his scull wile resisting arrest and he still stood his ground and threw the police around like empty tracksuits..he boxed 8 rounds with a broken jaw. Does this sound like the sort of man who would throw the towell in for a sore shoulder. Sonny was the type of guy who would fight on if you ripped his arm off

It wasn't a sore shoulder, it was actually probably a ligament tear or something like that. Sonny took Ali a little bit light in their first match. The original scheduled rematch fell through because Ali got hurt, but Liston probably would have gotten his title back before losing it back to Ali in the rubber match a little later.

84 inch reach (same as 6'5 Lennox Lewis but with much bigger fists than Lewis). 15.5 inch fists, the biggest of any Heavyweight Champion - and if he hit you in the face, he hit most of or all of that face. He had a bigger Left arm than Right, but had an orthodox stance and a right that could smash - essentially meaning he had KO power in both hands, regardless of the left hand lead. He had a follow through punching style like Rocky - applying force for a long duration, but with the initial impactfullness of a Tyson and the brute strength of a Forman! He is considered the strongest Heavyweight Champion along with Foreman and then Primo Carnera. He had the longest reach in relation to height than any Heavyweight champ, and could lay a guy out with a left jab. He set up off of the Jab... If he couldn't land that, then it meant you were very good (Clay/Ali good)! We never even saw him in his prime

Sonny Liston disposed of another slugger in Cleveland Williams twice. Williams fought Liston with far more determination & aggression. He hit him with bombs that should’ve sent anyone to the canvass. He even was so powerful that Liston retreated on occasions. Remember Williams recovered from near fatal gun shooting injuries loosing 3/4 small intestines, kidney, bullet lodged into his hip bone and excessive body weight. Then to fight for World Title 10 months later.

This man terrified the heavyweight division for at least a decade and was highly avoided. An aging Rocky Marciano's management made sure to keep him away from this guy. Cus Damato kept Liston away from Floyd Patterson for as long as he could, the results of when they finally clashed confirmed why he did so. Sonny's jab along could knock you out and he had excellent fundamentals, a granite chin, solid stamina, and a hellacious intimidation factor. RIP champ

Sonny Liston had so much talent that people don't really understand how good he really was. Unfortunately when he became a champion, he became a heavy alcoholic. He never took his training seriously and then drugs became involved. If he stayed hungry and disciplined to the sport, he was def tyson before tyson. Lost to cassius clay due lack of training and of course alcoholism. His death is still a mystery.
