0:38 They weren't seriously considering Roger Moore returning for an eighth Bond movie, were they? For crying out loud, he would have just turned 60 by the time the movie came out. Timothy Dalton was a great Bond. As much as I like Pierce Brosnan, I do sometimes wish Tim could have at least done a third Bond movie. If he had, then his movies could have been referred to as the Dalton trilogy.

From what I have read (some of the short stories, looking forward to reading some of the novels) Dalton is definitely the closest to Fleming's Bond. Craig is honestly nothing like the Fleming Bond until Skyfall. In CR and QoS, Craig is more like a robot programmed to kill, while Dalton fits the inelegant and conflicted yet human assassin role perfectly.

Dalton was flemming's bond...He knew exactly who Bond really was...He stepped right from the pages onto the screen, and following, I'm sorry i have to say it, Roger 'clown' Moore as Bond people weren't ready for his portrayal which was waaay ahead of the times...The fact Craig is getting this 'True bond' praise is such bollox when he's just playing a 'blander' version of what Timothy put on the screen years ago..Dalton/Connery are the true Bonds IMO.

think there are fans of every actor so it's a waste of time to change their minds..with Dalton, the facts are that he was the tallest actor to play 007, had the dark features, and played true to Fleming's novels, which are reasons why he was the best 007

To be exact, it was the prospect of having to take on several films, rather than just the one, that he turned down; but yes, in multiple ways he is the best actor to have played Bond.

I don't necessarily have a preference for gritty Bond, or campy Bond, but this has always been my favorite Bond movie, although it's gritty and dark, the small bits of humor actually work for me more then the bits of humor in Casino Royale, or even the humor in A View To A Kill. And I actually liked Moore's Bond

I grew up with the Moore Bond. The first one I saw at the cinema when I was 10 was The Spy Who Loved Me. HUGE hit. People lined halfway down the mall where the cinema was to get in. And mind you Star Wars was going on at the same time. There was enough ticket money to go around for both I guess. They even had one of the Lotus car's used for the film there and everyone flocked to see it. It was the late 70's and people wanted to lighten up a bit after a rough previous 10-15 years with Kennedy, Vietnam, Watergate, and everything else. But they still wanted a 007 and one to fit the times. Moore delivered. I just wished Octopussy would have been his finale.

I have always loved Dalton's Bond. He is my second favourite to Connery. Dalton's Bond kicks Craig's Bond ass. Any time. Every time. Even with just two films. Dalton really upped the Bond casting game. He was way ahead of his time. Craig does a good job but by the time he came along, James Bond 007 had evolved into a super-brand. He has all the advantages of a super next-gen Team Broccoli Bond that is also much more heavily invested in the longevity of their brand but it was Dalton who made that transitional Bond that many so harshly criticise. Craig's Broccoli team has all the results of the previous experiments they did with Bond. They have a bigger budget, better tech for better stunt coordination and cinematic effects, and a team of screen writers who can script better parts (not necessarily whole movies) for Bond so that he consistently appeals to the audience one way or another. It's not a level playing field by which to compare Dalton and Craig.

Although I will also insist that "Sean Connery IS James Bond," I have read all the Ian Fleming novels, and there's no doubt at all that Timothy Dalton played the part closest to what Sir Ian intended -- even more than Connery. Of course, Dalton never met Sir Ian, nor had Sir Ian match his bio to Bond's. Connery did though!

@haphazzardstuff I agree with your observation that Dalton's Bond doesn't sound natural spewing the oneliners. Perhaps they were holdovers from the original script, which had been written with Brosnan in mind, and tailored later for Dalton. I don't think I would have included them in the film if I had directed it. Nice commentary series, by the way.

Dalton is the actor that most closely physically resembles the Fleming/fictional version of Bond. The whole "hard eyes" and the "young Hoagy Carmichael" look. But the Craig portrayal and films are the closest to the tone and feel of the novels. The frenetic action, Bond characterized as a "blunt instrument" of MI6, etc.
@PurushaDesa
@PurushaDesa 13 жыл бұрын
Timothy Dalton proved in Hot Fuzz that he IS funny. They just didn't bother tailoring any humour for his type of jaded Bond, since they thought they could just cut and paste Roger Moore's one liners onto his films. It's funny that Daniel Craig is essentially doing the same dark portrayal now, and it's going down much better because they've crafted the humour to suit the actor now.

Timothy Dalton was my choice for Bond for some years before he actually took the job. If the writing and direction had been more supportive, he would have succeeded in refining Bond's on screen image to conform with Ian Fleming's original concept of the character. In a sense, Daniel Craig has been riding Dalton's coat tails. Craig has gotten credit for redefining Bond because the writing and direction did more to support his interpretation.

The convention in the more recent Bond movies has been to incorporate the title of the movie into the dialogue somewhere. Supposing this convention had worked the other way round, and he had said 'I must have scared the living shit out of her'. What about the theme song? 'Oh, oh oh oh, the liv-ing shit...'

Nice video. I think Dalton came closer than Moore to realizing Fleming's vision of Bond in that he portrayed the character with a grittiness that had been absent from the character throughout the 1970s. But in my opinion, Daniel Craig's portrayal is the closest to Fleming's idea--a rough, calculated secret agent with an underlying vulnerability. My favorite Bond is Pierce Brosnan, who combined the machismo of Connery, the tenderness of Lazenby, the humor of Moore, and the intensity of Dalton.
@Taconic66
@Taconic66 12 жыл бұрын
Dalton brought the seriousness and intensity back to the role with a Cold war theme in Living Daylights and the drug war theme of License to Kill it made the series believable again. I think its just viewer preference. Connery, Moore, and Brosnan were wittier portrayals while Lazenby, Dalton and now Craig gave more of an edge.

Fun review! I love Dalton's Bond. But a point about the weak villain you don't make is that Baker's arms merchant is set up as a buffoon. I think the filmmakers wanted this to be some sort of anti-war statement (and one against toxic-masculinity?), but it just drained the character of menace.

I don't agree that the villains in The Living Daylights are light or weak. Koskov gives us some comedy, it's true, but his plan to convince the British secret service to eliminate General Pushkin almost works. M and the minister are taken in. Koskov was obviously a great planner. The villains not being so drooling with evil is a welcome change after the likes of Stromberg, Drax and Blofeld with their plans for world domination and the OTT Zorin. This was a good Cold War movie and one of the best in the series. As for Licence to Kill, it really brought the series up to date, as drug lords were big news at the time.

The thing about the villains they are both stereotypes. Koskov is an over friendly russian character and Whitaker is your pompous southerner. They are both such non threats. True Goldfinger and Drax dont that physically strong but they have presence and intimidation. Koskov comes off as too wimpy to be a general. Atleast Orlov from Octopussy had energy. And Whitaker being a man child with deadly toys. Could maybe work with Connery or Moore. Or maybe he got his hands dirty on screen? Like kill some henchman who failed him or something. Necros is fine and his fights are decent. Even if his name is dumb (Necros is greek for death but I guess is no more on the nose than say Pussy Galore).

See the problem wasn't Dalton. The problem was that the films weren't strong enough. Daylights is close but a bit slight with no stand out moments. Licence is a wasted opportunity for a non-stop mano-a-mano - the extra violence is welcome but it's too damn slow. Dalton was just trying the back-to-Fleming approach, fans finally accepted with a strong film like Casino Royale. If the lacklustre Quantum of Solace had been Daniel Craig's first outing, he may have received a similarly cold reception.

Timothy Dalton was a pretty good choice to play James Bond. However, "The Living Daylights" has ups and downs. Thus, the presentation of James Bond is amazing while the escape in the case of the cello is totally absurd. The "Bond girl" is not memorable; she is naive and not sexy. The villains are boring and ridiculous. Moreover, the film needed a good story and lacked of a good direction.
