About twenty five years ago I was visiting my Uncle on his small farm in Southern Iowa. To earn my keep, I helped to clean out the hog pens. We shoveled the manure mixed with straw into a John Deere spreader. It was an old spreader. Anyway I used his older John Deere tractor and hauled the load out to an alfalfa field to spread. I put the tractor into low gear, reached back and pulled the lever to engage the spreader and everything was a okay. Until I decided that the pace was too slow so I when to a higher gear and sped up a bit. Well I was pelted with a shower of wet sloppy pig crap. What a lesson....that stuff stained my clothes and I never got it out. What a lesson! Love your videos thanks.

THATS the *backbreaking* way to do i! If you've not been permanently turned off farming by that, NOTHING is going to stop you!

Mike, you just keep bringing back the memories. I remember back in the 1960’s my brother and I were tasked by my uncle with mucking out the barn gutters and the small corral behind the barn. We shoveled the stuff into the spreader. He had a manure spreader similar to yours but more primitive. I have never seen a stuff slung with such ferocity before or since. :-)

Thank you, it is beautiful. I hope it doesnt blow away today, winds are steady at 35 gusting to 50mph. I already lost my hat this morning when I opened the tractor door while feeding, it went straight up in the air about 75 feet then landed about 3 hundred yards away...right in a pond!

This topic reminded me of the annual festival known for the Cow Chip throwing capital in Beaver, Oklahoma. Once a year cow chips fly to determine the furthest distance contestants can propel them. Many ranchers, FFA and 4H members had much experience in this area.

hehe i used to use a simular manure spreader in the 1980s with chain belt instead of push bar, it was fun but a dirty job since we used an old fordson major with no cab so both the tractor and driver soon got coverd in a thick layer of poop but most of the manure ended where it should haha

I'm always amazed by how many farm implements farmers and ranchers need. My parents only harvest hay and they are always finding a reason to buy a new addition or attachment. Thankfully, they haven't needed a manure spreader yet. Ha!

The first day we arrived in Wyoming, we stayed in a motel in Torrington, stepping out of the motel was like getting hit in the face with poop, I ask the lady at the desk why it stunk so bad, she said we were smelling money. A local told us it was Dinklage in full swing, we were surprised how easy it was to get used to the smell.

I've got a couple of things to say and questions to ask: 1. Awesome videos: informative, entertaining, good storytelling. Thank you and keep up the good work. 2. I know you want to get close the gap with the local consumer and I apologize for watching all the way from Belgium, but I love Wyoming. It truly is an underrated state. 3. Question time: Do you have an off-season without much farm work going on? 4. If yes to previous question: please go produce some audio books with that voice. Seriously, it's amazing. 5. If no, can I come work on your farm for a day or 2 free of charge to give you time to produce some audio books? 6. If really no to the audio books: Can I still come and work on your farm for a couple of days? Thank you.
@OurWyomingLife7 жыл бұрын
1.Thank you very much, we plan to! 2. Dont apologize for watching from Belgium, its actually a huge compliment to us! 3.The off season is the wintertime, not really off but slower. I still feed daily, check waters, get eggs all the normal stuff but other than that the majority of work in the winter I make for myself and if I want to be lazy for a few hours I can. 4. Thanks for the compliment, if you know anyone in the audio book business send them on over haha 5&6. I never turn down free labor! The commute might be a pain though. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Awesome comment and questions :)

Just an add-on to another vid..."molasses" (usually blackstrap) for animals..is a good source of iron, an excellent source of vitamin b12, and potassium! Any of those is deficient, your animals will not only NOT thrive, they'll probably go downhill, FAST! SO yhose tubs mike was putting out arent just "treats" for the beasts, they're an essential part of thrir feeding plan!

Hi Mike. My wife and I are really enjoying your channel and are slowly working through your published videos at rate of 2 to 3 per day. We are getting quite an education on how to raise cattle in WY! Hey Mike, this was one of your best videos yet. I would be really interested in a video that shows us what time you wake up everyday and what your very beginning of the day ritual is. Maybe one that shows your end of the day duties as well and what time you call it a day. I enjoyed this shitty (pun intended) video as usual and keep up all the hard work!

I have a question: Is it true that pigs consume the most water of all farm animals? Here in CA pig farmers and nut growers were hit hard by the water shortage.
@OurWyomingLife6 жыл бұрын
A pig up to about 250lbs will need from 3 to 5 gallons per day. A cow for example will drink As a rule of thumb, consumption will range from 1 gallon per 100 pounds of body weight during cold weather to nearly 2 gallons per 100 pounds of body during the hottest weather. 12 gallons on average during cold weather to 24 during summer months. I can see how a water shortage can really affect them. Thanks for watching - Mike

why did you go with a hydro push spreader vs chain apron ?
@OurWyomingLife7 жыл бұрын
Honestly it was what was here when we came to the ranch. I have used the chain aprons as well and they work just as well. I like the hydro push just because its a bigger machine and holds more, making for less trips back to the manure pile, but at the same time its more stuff to break. Always a give and take. Thanks for the great question! -Mike

Thanks Mike. I was looking at one for my operation so I thought I would ask. Danny

the chains eventually get rusty from the urine and manure and break and replacing them lets just say is a shi$$y job. been there and done that.
