When you ride a bike, you are not passing through a place, watching it pass through a window while sitting in an air conditioned cabin. When you ride a bike, you are in a place, you smell it, you hear it and you feel it. Even when riding through your own neighborhood, you will see things that you never knew were there. A bike gives you back far more then you put into it.

+John Reynolds Yes, its very therapeutic because of this. I don't think someone who drives realizes how focused one is and must be when cycling. You forget any troubles because you are constantly aware of weather, speed, effort, gear, immediate obstacles, distant obstacles, traction and on and on. At least this has been my experiance with primarily urban cycling and off road. I have never cycle toured but it looks very appealing. nly finances hold me back really. I worked as a courier for a couple years and it was easily the best job ever. oo bad it pays so little today. Its quite hard on a bike also. I suppose this is similar to that of touring in that you put in long miles and must be on top of your bikes condition.

Yeah. Even my simple 13 km bike drive to work is so meditative. I don´t think about work or what i will do afterwards. I simply drive my bike and my mind wanders.

Totally agree that I love not knowing what each day will bring and all the random stuff that can happen, also meeting locals away from the tourist scene. Worth all the pain, sweat and headwinds!

Nice video! You have perfectly summed up what I have also found to be true. Indeed, the best part of all my travels is meeting people and the golden generosity they extend, along with the Sacred Synchronicities that always delight and surprise me. This is LIVING! Alas, I find the hardest thing about cycle-touring is going home. The real challenge is to live at home amidst my comforts and convenience with the same Presence and Awareness that is active when I am on the road. This is my "Project".

+TELUS Optik Local - I really enjoyed the personalized real-world stories from this video. Especially the ones about the commune/clown camp & invitation to stay at the Thai plantation w/ the tent inside the living room! With an upcoming 8 month bike tour getting closer every day this was a great video to watch to get excited for the adventure. Thanks for creating it! -------------------- My favorite quote from the video: "The most meaningful experiences have come when the wind is blowing so strong and I'm just yelling into it. But riding through it is like a rebirth - it provides you with a ground to grow. You really feel it and experience it. It's more raw and that's why it's more real. Now the dream is to experience the same vulnerability and rawness going through the daily routines of life..."

You can use any bike for touring, you do not need expensive gear but you will want lower gears than what you have now. Lower low and lower top end as you will not be speeding down hills loaded as it really makes a difference how your bike will respond loaded. Lots of different bikes to choose from and if the narrow seat is a problem try a recumbent.

+LT1HILLINGHOE Agreed......listening to a first-world, middle class hippie talking about how she is always activated and aware when biking suddenly ruined cycling for me....Because riding for months with credit cards in your pocket and without working is how you "reconnect" to the world. I have a Catrike Expedition recumbent trike. I have been on two smaller tours; one was a 400 mile tour. And the other was a 600 mile tour. I saved and bought and saved and bought all the top quality equipment for a long tour; Ortlieb panniers, a lot of Sea to Summit gear, and all the rest super light and top quality gear. Now, I have a good paying job currently, I just don't want to necessarily give it up. But I really want to go on a long tour in the United states. I like the freedom that cycle touring brings you in so many ways. However, I absolutely dislike the hippy philosophy and lingo that a lot of cyclists embrace. I don't know what it is, I can't quite put my finger on it, but a lot of bicycle tourists embrace this whole 'global liberal culture mindset', even if they are from the United States. SMH eye roll. I think a lot of it comes from what and how they are, or were being taught in schools and universities from their teachers and professors. It is clearly a agenda to promote globalism. I realize that this is a very strong evaluation from me. But I've lived long enough in the United States to see the ever increasing massive change that continues to overtake this country. And sadly it's not for the better.

I'm a cyclist but just to share .... what I'm seeing is the older folks? Are beginning to experience real medical issues. One lady's story is severe joint issues that are permanent. Maybe long term riding ISN'T such a good idea .................... ??? Maybe even on a motorcycle and being exposed to the elements can be 'health damaging' ???? I'm seeing some of the RVer's here ... they look like their aging, what if that lifestyle is too hard on the human body. ????
