Happiness is not in the object. The object gives us happiness only because we like that object. For example, a smoker enjoys cigarette smoke, whereas someone who doesn’t like it covers his nose. Here, although the object is the same, two people react differently to it. The first person enjoyed it because he loved the smell; the second person did not enjoy it because he did not like the smell. Where is this love coming from? It is coming from within. Unfortunately, we have allowed our love to become entrapped in such feeble objects.

"The Scriptures speak of three states of happiness. The first state is called happiness, which comes from agreeable objectivity. The second state of happiness is called joy, which comes from agreeable subjectivity. It relates to the mind while the first one relates to the senses and the body.
