The first time i saw SRV was in September of 1982. His album "Texas Flood" had been out for a month or so. There was an awards show in Miami, Fl. called the Jammy Awards, for local talent. SRV was an opening act for Mitch Ryder!! When SRV was done, and my lady friend and I went to the concession area, where all you heard through out was WHO WAS THAT GUY???? I was smiling because i had, had the album for a few weeks, and was dying to see him live. Unbelievable he was BETTER live than the record, which is extremely hard to do! I ended up seeing SRV 6 more times. Then i had just gotten off work, and heard the terrible news of August 27th 1990, he had died. It was one of those very few times a death effected me that to this day, it still stings! In November 1987 i was backstage at the Brevard County Fair, and got to meet and greet with SRV and the band. My lady friend had a friend take a group picture, that was NEVER got a copy of! This still bugs me, today...SIDE NOTE....Stevie died exactly 4 years to the day, his father died....Big Jim died on August 27th 1986!!

The thunderbirds played about every 2 months and packed the club every time. I talked to Jimmy just about every time, and he motioned for me to come over. When I got backstage he introduced me to Stevie and said I would be hearing alot from Stevie. He played 3 songs that night with the thunderbirds. Also got to see ZZ Top at a different venue in Lafayette, Louisiana. All of them before they were famous. This was before I turned 25.

First thing first... A big Texas-Sized HAPPY BIRTHDAY LULU!!&! 🎂🧸🎸💐⚘️ If y'all haven't reacted to the Jimi Hendrix version of this song, you should just to see the original. Stevie Ray's older brother, Jimmy Vaughan was in a band called The Chessmen, and was the opening act for The Jimi Hendrix Experience. I know for a fact that Stevie Ray met Jimi Hendrix when Stevie was a young boy because I got to spend some time at the Vaughan house with Martha Vaughan and Jimmy, looking at family photo albums. I saw several photos of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and others that visited the Vaughan family whenever they were in the Dallas area for concerts, and Jimmy's group would open. Jimi Hendrix was SRV's inspiration, and he was incredible to watch and listen to. I believe Stevie Ray Vaughan took his music further. Not knocking Jimi, but Stevie Ray's passion is just so far over the top, I know Jimi must be very proud!!&!

Happy belated birthday, Lulu! Hope you had a great day! Edit: I've played guitar for over 40 years and my second guitar teacher took private lessons from Stevie Ray Vaughan at GIT (Guitar Institute and Technology) in Hollywood, Ca. At my first lesson with him he played me a cassette tape that he recorded during some of their sessions and it just blew me away. To hear his voice explaining things and to hear him playing raw was magical to me. My teacher made a copy of that tape for me but somehow I lost it over the years. I think it was actually stolen. But he told me to bring a boombox to record our sessions. I still have those tapes. But, damn! Can you image having a recording of Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar lessons? I would have got it up here on KZbin if I still had it.

Stevie Ray Vaughan !!!!!.. Voodoo Child is one of my all time favorites. It is a cover of a Jimi Hendrix song. I put Stevie at the top of all time greats. ...Rude Mood... shows off his skill. Austin City Limits has some of the best versions of his songs. In that concert he breaks a string while playing and has to switch guitars while playing. Someone brings it out for him and helps him. I don't know how many times we watched that concert before someone realized that he was playing different guitar at the end of song.

Happy Birthday Lulu, I heard Stevie asked Jimi Hendrix dad if he would mind him covering this song and Jimis dad gave him his blessing plus let him use one of Jimis foot pedal effects box. Great reaction. Also the guitar he's using is named Lenny after his wife Lenora which he bought for 300$ in a pawn shop and sold for over 600,000$ after his death for an Eric Clapton charity event.

Funny story. Dint see him live, but, I was living in S. Dallas in a suburb called Duncanville and went to high school there. In 1986 after he finished rehab, he moved back to his mom's house in Oak Cliff and lived there till he died in 1990. Oak Cliff is a 10 minute drive by highway from my house. So I was living just the town next over from him. Wild thought

Grew up on Hendrix, Cream and then Clapton solo. Then there's Stevie. Hendrix was a God to Stevie and influenced him all the way to his core. Stevie picked up where Hendrix left off when he died and took the guitar to a level never heard before. Voodoo Child is one of Hendrix signature songs going I think all the way back to the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. This song is absolute FIRE and Stevie burns it all the way down. If you like guitar about ready to explode, you came to the right place. If you want your mind blown, search YT for Stevie "sound check" you will not believe your eyes and ears and it's a mid morning sound check - OMG
