Also IIRC, Misha was the cute bear mascot of the Moscow Olympics. An unfortunate coincidence of names as the USSR invaded brutally Afghanistan. I strive to not be one to interject politics into a channel that is a refuge from politics (although Bobby versus the USSR was cast as a battle of systems). But the nickname Misha really does invoke memories of geo-political conflict. Kind sir, Agadmator, please do continue to announce Mr. Tal as Tal.

About pronunciation. It's not Tal' with softened L (from russian Таль), although that might be the most often used pronunciation during his chess career. He was born in independent Latvia in Jewish family, so officially his surname would have been pronounced with long "A", like Tahl and normal "L" (from Latvian - Tāls), i.e. [ta:ls], and it obviously comes from Yiddish name Tal (which, I believe, pronounces without softening of L, but not sure about the length of an "A"). So, it's either [ta:ls], [tal] or [ta:l], depending if you use Latvian or Yiddish origin of his surname. During WW2 his family fled to Soviet Union and his entire chess career he was identified by russianized version of name "Tal" or "Tāls", which is "Таль" with short "A" and soft "L". For slavic languages and those who know him via USSR/Russia channels, this become the normal way of pronouncing his surname, but it does not mean that it is the correct way. Latvians and Jews will not agree with that :)

But he was a citizen of USSR where Russian was spoken, so I guess in all the documents it was Таль (Tal')
@artursruseckis4242
@artursruseckis4242 3 жыл бұрын
@@hauntinghaze5161 He was born in free Latvia, so by all his birth documents, he was citizen of Latvia, named Mihails Tāls (i.e. with prolonged "a"). Also, even during the soviet occupation we still had dual language documents, where he would have had both transcriptions - Tāls and Таль. And most importantly, it's likely that both versions are butchering his real name, because as a Jew, his real name was Tal, which I have no clue how to pronounce, probably - exactly as it is written, without prolonged "a" and most certainly - without changed endings of "L", with neither the softening (ль) nor Latvian-style ending "-s". So internationally it would be "Tal", I guess.

Yeah, but the version of his name most commonly used in English is from the Russianized version of his name (we're not calling him Mihalis now, aren't we?) Also since ultimately he played for the Soviets (since Latvia was still a constituent republic) the Russian version of his name's used (kinda like Genghis instead of Chinggis). Sure he's Latvian, but the Russian version of his name's definitely more common abroad.

He was jewish, so it's "Tal". "Translated" into Latvian (since he was born in Latvia), it would be "Tāls" (ands yes wes indeeds adds letters "s" tos alls ours namess ;)), but in either case he was not Таль, that was sovietized version of his name after he fled to USSR during ww2 (however, that's how he probably was known in entire chess world, since he represented USSR with his russianized version of surname).

I also wish the great Michail Tal a Happy Birthday! He would have turned 84 years old today, he could be still with us, but had a poor health and died in 1992, sadly enough! If he had lived longer, we would have seen more great games by him, he was one of those ingenious players who could beat any opponent on a good day. Maybe he would have been an even stronger player if he had worked harder, but he was Tal, the one and only, the immortal genius! Rest in peace, Mikhail!

About your pronunciation of Tal. Unless I'm wrong, how you pronounce it in this video is how Russians pronounce it. And the previous pronunciation is closer to how Latvians pronounce it. Even though I'm from Latvia I am not completely sure on which one is actually correct, since it's written differently dependent on if it's in Latvian (Tāls) or Russian (Таль) which changes pronunciation for both.

Its Таль in russian, so the L is soft and his pronounciation is correct.

I look at it this way: he fled to the USSR when he was 6 years old, and was only famous as a Soviet chess player. Adressing him by the Latvian version of his name is a big stretch, it's like going for the Japanese pronounciation of Hikaru Nakamura because he was born in Japan

Hi Agadmator, I’m from Riga, Latvia, so have a bit of knowledge of Tal. Your previous pronunciation of Tal with the hard L is actually correct. The pronunciation you used in this video would be the way Russians would pronounce it. But in original Latvian it is correct to call him Tal not Talj.

I have seen & played once against M. Tal in a Simultaneous Tournament in Bonn, Germany, where he seemed to have lived in his last Years. I gave up after 12 -14 moves. That was on 9th July 1991, I still have the notation with his autograph. A small very friendly man but very focused on the ongoing games. The only player that won against him I remember, was a tuned up Chess Computer. Afterwards he invited us players to go to a nearby Chinese diner.

#suggestion # a good poem You might wanna checkout. it is about one of the greatest pirate whoever lived. THE GREAT MISHA TAL Amongst world's attacking players he stands All his games can be summarized as Sac, Sac so tall and Mate! With his helpless opponents reduced to blaming their fate! He starts the game with emphasis on development Spends most of his time plotting his piece deployment Towards opponent's King innocuously directing his guns And gradually loading them with ammunition in tons! Out of the blue comes a sac like lightning and thunder! Although sometimes unsound, forces the opponent to blunder While the rest of the world watches in complete wonder, His opponent is soon left with little option but to surrender! He sees through what most others hardly see With his eagle eyes concentrating so very intensely! Amazing and incredible combinations are his forte Throwing caution to the winds, charting his own way! He was without doubt a magician of his own class! Such a genius the world had to lose so early, alas! His lifelong endeavor was to detect combinations so sublime His games with such creative content will live for a long time! -Saketh Kumar. Posted on chase Base india
