About pronunciation. It's not Tal' with softened L (from russian Таль), although that might be the most often used pronunciation during his chess career. He was born in independent Latvia in Jewish family, so officially his surname would have been pronounced with long "A", like Tahl and normal "L" (from Latvian - Tāls), i.e. [ta:ls], and it obviously comes from Yiddish name Tal (which, I believe, pronounces without softening of L, but not sure about the length of an "A"). So, it's either [ta:ls], [tal] or [ta:l], depending if you use Latvian or Yiddish origin of his surname. During WW2 his family fled to Soviet Union and his entire chess career he was identified by russianized version of name "Tal" or "Tāls", which is "Таль" with short "A" and soft "L". For slavic languages and those who know him via USSR/Russia channels, this become the normal way of pronouncing his surname, but it does not mean that it is the correct way. Latvians and Jews will not agree with that :)
@hauntinghaze51614 жыл бұрын
But he was a citizen of USSR where Russian was spoken, so I guess in all the documents it was Таль (Tal')
@artursruseckis42424 жыл бұрын
@@hauntinghaze5161 He was born in free Latvia, so by all his birth documents, he was citizen of Latvia, named Mihails Tāls (i.e. with prolonged "a"). Also, even during the soviet occupation we still had dual language documents, where he would have had both transcriptions - Tāls and Таль. And most importantly, it's likely that both versions are butchering his real name, because as a Jew, his real name was Tal, which I have no clue how to pronounce, probably - exactly as it is written, without prolonged "a" and most certainly - without changed endings of "L", with neither the softening (ль) nor Latvian-style ending "-s". So internationally it would be "Tal", I guess.

Yeah, but the version of his name most commonly used in English is from the Russianized version of his name (we're not calling him Mihalis now, aren't we?) Also since ultimately he played for the Soviets (since Latvia was still a constituent republic) the Russian version of his name's used (kinda like Genghis instead of Chinggis). Sure he's Latvian, but the Russian version of his name's definitely more common abroad.

He was jewish, so it's "Tal". "Translated" into Latvian (since he was born in Latvia), it would be "Tāls" (ands yes wes indeeds adds letters "s" tos alls ours namess ;)), but in either case he was not Таль, that was sovietized version of his name after he fled to USSR during ww2 (however, that's how he probably was known in entire chess world, since he represented USSR with his russianized version of surname).

About your pronunciation of Tal. Unless I'm wrong, how you pronounce it in this video is how Russians pronounce it. And the previous pronunciation is closer to how Latvians pronounce it. Hi agadmator, the Slavicized pronunciation you have adopted is unheard of in Yiddish; his name would certainly be pronounced 'Tahl", as you pronounce it at 0:51. I'd imagine that most people called him 'Таль' during his life in the USSR, but the Yiddish name 'טאַל' is unambiguously pronounced 'tahl', as the vowel under the aleph is a patach and Yiddish does not distinguish between hard and soft 'L's. Tal most likely read his name to himself as you read it at 0:51.
