Horror scares you, making you want to escape(fight or flight) and terror is the sense of uneasiness and not belonging, the feeling of dread, being lost in the dark with strange noises, exploring abandoned buildings, knowing something is watching you, etc. Without terror inducing environments, jump scares and such would not be scary. I kinda think Manly's right, I think the big smily face is _trying_ to help. Its failing, and it has a twisted idea of early _how_ to help, but it does seem to be generally on the MC's side. It has a sinister air to it, but its actions generally seem to be positive, if from a twisted perspective and with twisted ideas of happiness. It's _trying_, it just seems to have an alien idea of how to make the kid happy and what happiness even is.

I think the best interpretation of the ending is that the main character was trying to forget the childhood trauma of losing the dog but the last puzzle represented having to accept that as a part of life after growing up with the "waking up" segment being about remembering the happiness that came with the dog in their childhood while the body on the floor represented going "numb" with ones emotions as an adult after taking medication to deal with the trauma spent as a child and feeling trapped in trying to truly express emotion: which is being happy.
@Hellobunni Жыл бұрын
This is interesting but I feel like the interpretation manly gave at the end was pretty close to what they were going for because although yes, it is a terrible and long lasting to any person or child to lose a childhood pet, this world is really demented for it to solely revolve around the loss of a childhood pet that only makes an appearance in the third nightmare and wasn’t involved at all in the first 2 nightmare segments. That is something any and all children whose owned a pet faces at some point, it’s an unavoidable fact of life, so why would that turmoil alone cause such a disturbing and nightmarishly intricate dream world into what is thought to be their adult years? Definitely feel like the story was probably hinting at more than just a childhood pet loss being the root of the characters issues

The ending section had a whole vibe of "being trapped by happy people" like when you feel like you shouldn't feel anything bad because all the happy people around say you have no reason to. I used to have night terrors almost every night from the time I was very young up until the age of 13. My nightmares unironically looked similar to this. The triggers, like flashing lights, sporadic and violent movements, and barely human-looking figures were frighteningly similar. Even black figures with white faces looking at you in almost complete darkness. I had one *exactly* like that when I was 4 or 5. This is all too familiar for me.

After watching and going back, I realized the adult version of the kid is imagining himself as a kid. I was wondering why there were two kid versions of him. I guess it makes sense that the kid with hair and pajamas is his actually younger self. If it goes by the s**cide narrative, then he's going down memory lane in the post death dream. Maybe he went through lot of things since childhood. Hate to make a dark note on a dark game, but MAN it's so good. I knew I would have enjoyed this game since the demo!

I'm fairly confident Manly nailed the story at the end there, but it's also kind of unimportant to me in this instance. The major appeal of this game is its visuals, the story is just an excuse to allow this insanity to happen and I believe that works in its favor. It's all twisted in the best way, this game's got some strong moments of just disturbing you. I'm not forgetting that bunny segment anytime soon.
@FluffyDragonDrawing3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, the story is secondary to the game; but I appreciate it because it does drive the game forward without it feeling forced. There's enough to provide a satisfaction of getting something done, and a drive to continue. But it's clearly not the focus and I appreciate that.
@RougeMephilesClone3 жыл бұрын
I do agree that the experience is the most important, and it seems like the game acknowledges this by making it clear that the protagonist died. Still, I appreciate the enormous amount of visual imagery that retells the boy's life if you want it.

@@soc7967 This is a year late and I don't have the time to type much right now, but basically everything in the game is a metaphor for something that happened to the kid (actually a late teen or young adult) viewed through the metaphor of his chronic depression and anxiety. Even his earliest childhood memories of playing with toys seemed unusually unpleasant, hinting at abuse and/or improper care from adults that are noticeably absent from most of the game. There are some positive moments, like getting support from a small friend group, distracting himself with soccer, and even some pleasurable trips (until he overdoses). However, in the end, it's seemingly all just a dying man's dream - with the implication that his immortal soul does NOT find the peace he wants.

I really think the entire game is what’s happening in this person’s mind as they die from a suicidal drug overdose. Like, it’s about a person who was deeply traumatized and depressed, and spent their entire life trying to convince themselves that they were happy-and the smiling face that was looking over each dream was THEM, their own mind, controlling the perception of these memories, trying to find happiness as they slowly die, the dreams being a nightmare hallucination fueled by the drugs. They likely blamed their depression on the things they lost as a child-the ball, doll, and dog. With the belief that if they just had those things back, they wouldn’t be miserable (and they were likely ignoring the other aspects of their trauma, like the bullying). The whole game is, in this sense, this person fighting against themselves, trying to find some scrap of true happiness in their final moments, but knowing deep down that it’s futile. It’s about someone who wants a simple solution to solve their trauma and depression, who tries as hard as they can to convince themselves a simple solution is possible, but they know it will never BE that simple in reality. The “if I just had what I lost I’ll be happy” is equated to the suicide itself in that way, in thinking that suicide is an “easy” escape. The game says that, no, suicide isn’t an easy escape-for this character, it was a horrific, drawn out parade of mortal terror and they consistently wanted to LIVE through it. But they’re too far gone to go back, and they just have to ride out the awful experience until the end. And even in the end, they can’t do anything but continue to convince themselves they made the right choice, even when they know they’re trapped and know they’re regretting it.

_I didn't know that is how bunnies multiplied_ I love the creativity of Amanita Designs. Poor child's dreams are so twisted and horrific, yet with touches of quirky dark humor. The puppy was great, especially that quick casual whizz it took. Very sad tho. I'll never look at a smiley face the same again. Great puzzle solving! :)

I think I watched my mum play the first one once, but I played the second as a kid. The game huanted me for years cos I couldn't find it again for years until a while ago I found it on Steam. Actually I remember we played Samorost 2 on a website that I think gave us a virus? It was never the full game. Just a part of it. Well that's what I remember anyway.. I was like 7 or 8.... I wonder if that was it, I had troubles watching this as well, but I couldn't really pinpoint what it was; because I can handle horror games featuring young children, but something about this was really hard. I think you might have something there with the sounds they made, something there caused a very heavy subconscious reaction.
@AoiLucine3 жыл бұрын
@@FluffyDragonDrawing Yeah. Thinking on it a lot of games with children as the protags don't have the sound design this one did; add in the wide eyed innocence and looks of horror/fear when bad things start to happen while whimpering like that and it just sort of made me deeply uncomfortable and want to scoop that kid up and protect them. So, basically if you wanna do good horror with kids, don't skimp on the audio. It's *really* effective.

I usually don't sympathize with kids during horror games and I'm mostly desensitized to most scares, Amanita surprisingly went above and beyond and broke through those expectations. Oof ouch i feel like this game called me out specifically. I have borderline and depression (diagnosed by a professional) and i have a uh habit of coping through engaging with materials from my childhood. Like, today I literally ordered the sims: bustin out on gamecube because it was one of my favorite games. Problem is, most of the things from my childhood have like, traumas around them. Like with certain video games I have memories of playing them to drown out fighting. But! Don't feel bad, I'm in therapy, I'm doing some genuine, constructive inner child work when I can, things are getting better, I don't talk to the family who hurt me, and every single day I get stronger. Things can and do get better.

Personally I think it's the trauma of suddenly becoming a ophen and losing everything alot of the time your suddenly taken out the home so you never get to see pets or toys again. And adults around ophens try to be crazy positive to not hurt them more then they are already hurting, but sometimes it can backfire and make the child feel like a outcast. Just a theory though.

The fact that this game inflicts feelings of childhood nostalgia in me is kinda worrying. I used to suffer from frequent night terrors as a young kid that often involved several of the things depicted here. Death, loss, slowing of time and feelings of helplessness. My nightmares eventually became bad enough that I taught myself how to lucid dream long before I even reached the age of ten.

So this Is my interpretation: The boy had many traumas during his childood involving the Loss of his ball, bunny and dog. He never really deal with It and these traumas tormented him for all his Life. One day as a adult he decided to kill himself and what we are seeing Is like a purgatory/dream where we get back those things we Lost and everything Is fine. However Is not, we pretend It Is, but instead we are trapped in our mind as a punishment for Just giving up. I think the message of the game Is that we Need to accept that bad things happen and if we pretend that Life has to be Happy all the time we Just trap ourselves in a loop

But yeah my friends can make me laugh and depression will be gone but its repeating cycle, i get depression again and depression fades again, then the cycle just repeats again

It was a weird and eerie trip throughout the gameplay, but I've enjoyed this. Indeed, it initially seemed as if there was a separate entity that was helping the boy retrieve those precious things that he'd lost, despite having to go through such harrowing situations. But that final segment suddenly put us in our place. Giving us an ending that is "happy", instead of happy.

Ok I’m typing this and gonna edit as I watch: 1 The ball might be about losing a friend(who may or may not have died) the boy used to play with rather than a toy, in the sequence where he’s running after in under the lights we keep seeing a child with hair getting their head removed(in the next Spence we also pull a head that looks similar to the silhouette off a toy)also the multiple toys cover in blood could either be due to trauma or be a bit more literal

The game made me think about those theories of how your brain goes into a psychedelic state when you're dying, which I imagine this game could've potentially been inspired by. It made me think that if I were ever to have one similar to this where I think back on my purest childhood memories, my childhood dog who passed away nearly a couple years ago after 10 years would definitely be there. In fact watching this right before I went to sleep was a terrible idea because it just made me think about my dog and how it feels like a certain part of my life feels empty without him now too and I went to sleep tearing up a bit and really missing him. I still liked it though because I always appreciate reminders of him in general and how important he was in my life.
