What's up, Plastic Addicts?
I'm moved and set up, so more model building content will be posted soon.
Today, however, I wanted to talk about the loss of a major influencer in the SciFi Model Making world.
My friend, Trekworks (Boyd Compton), has passed away. It wasn't the cancer that took him, but a lung infection. Though, the treatments did weaken him, preventing his body from effectively fighting infection.
After seeing a number of posts I wanted to do something a bit different. Rather than post about his death affected me, as an individual, I want to focus on how Boyd impacted people overall.
Boyd could be described as the Bob Ross of modelling and I don't think that's hyperbole. He had an even temper and a soft presentation. This, I think, is what allowed him to connect with his audience and inspired people to get back into building or to start building.
Boyd will be missed, but his legacy will live on.

A punch in the gut. “The Bob Ross of modeling” is a spot-on description. This man was polite and generous, with no pettiness, ego, etc. A man who tirelessly demonstrated a love of the hobby and encouraged nothing but positivity and cooperation. Happy Modeling.

I have known Boyd for well over 30 years. He used to live in my hometown. Before his trekworks days. He was one of my best friends. We did lose touch for a good while when he moved to Texas. I found him by accidentally running across his KZbin channel. Got back in touch with him about 10 years ago. What some may not know is way back when he was big into RC car racing. We used to race together all over Wisconsin and Illinois. Spent many hours and days at different tracks with him. He recently had sent me his car from back in the day as I had mine as well. I now have them on display together on a shelf for memories of years gone by and a true great friend. He will definitely be missed. He made a difference in a lot of lives.

A fitting tribute Jason, to our friend Boyd. It's so good to see the many people he inspired from just being an honest and sincere man. You mentioned the days of the team speak sessions and it reminded me of the fun we had speaking to each other for the first time. It was neat how the SciFi Action forum grew incrementally out of our small core group. I've known a few men like Boyd and he's one of those talents that enjoy giving to others. Adam P. Courville

Hi Jason. Thank you for the tribute to Boyd. I literally just saw him. On April 24th I met him. I'd purchased his Ultimate Space Battleship Yamato to help support his treatments and went to his house to pick it up. He looked great. He was in good spirits and seemed to be physically recovering and getting stronger. And, I have to say, he was so nice and the coolest older nerd I've ever met. He spent the better part of 6 hours showing me his workspace and his model room while we just talked about everything science fiction and the modeling community. I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear he'd just passed away. I will treasure the time I spent with him, the model he made and how amazing his show was. He inspired me to start modeling again and his videos always had great tips on techniques and experiences shared. I will really miss him. RIP Boyd Crompton.

Having to sell his personal Collection, at first, seemed like a huge bummer. BUT, it allowed more fans to 'have a piece' of him. And it allowed a number of people to transcend the para social relationship and (like yourself) got to meet him

Sometime back in the early 20 teens, I had picked up a VTTBOTS Seaview kit on Amazon. Had no clue to lighting it, or the build process. Hadn't built a model in probably 2 decades. Found a You Tube video series from Boyd on the very same kit. It sparked me to start building again. I learned so much from his build series and from the live streams. Was so saddened to hear he had passed from complications to his cancer treatments. Was looking forward to his return to the livestream videos. Condolences to his family and friends. The modeling community is a little less bright without him.

Trekworks was the first KZbin channel I stumbled upon when I was looking at the 1/350 Enterprise Refit for my dad and I have learned many tricks from Boyd for the lighting, Boyd definitely was a great inspiration to the modelling community.

Thank you so much for this video tribute to Boyd. After watching so many of his videos of him building and teaching those of us who wanted to learn to model, it was almost as if he were a neighbor or good friend. Even for those of us who never got to meet him. He will be missed along with his infectious passion for the art form known as scale modelling. Thanks again Jason and thanks for being another bearer of the community torch.
