Happy New Year and thanks for all the work you're putting in. Let me tell you about my hellish search for a monitor for my Mac. I wanted to buy a BenQ because of its insistence on good color, however they don't have a 4k photo Adobe RGB focused monitor that's under $1,500 or so. I don't know at what point in time it became much harder to do RGB, but I'm pretty sure Adobe RGB simply got moved up market. It hasn't gotten harder to make these panels, I've been buying panels since 2000 and I've never had so much trouble picking up monitor before. I settled on a 32-in LG that was 450, because I just couldn't look anymore. I've been looking for a 4K Adobe focus monitor with a decent enough dot pitch for OSX since last year and I just gave up. Especially with the industry leaning towards video focus monitors, it's made life even that much harder for photographers finding good monitors like we're not getting beat up enough with our ludicrously expensive gear. And of course it doesn't help that those dipsh*ts at Apple making their baseline 27-in monitor 1600, like the goons that they are. There are so many niches for good solid electronics, like a 55-in picture quality focused box that doesn't need to do streaming and such. For the companies just aren't making them, just like they aren't making decent priced Adobe RGB focused monitors.

Art, I just got a 14 inch MBP with the M3 Pro chip and 36gb and your videos helped a lot in making my decision. However I don't quite like how they look when hooked up to my Dell 34" 3440x1440 or 38" 3840x1600 displays, both around 109PPI. Do you think a 32" 4k at 140ppi would be an improvement in sharpness, especially with the text?

Yes, it will be smoother in a way. You won't see the pixels as much

Happy New Year, Art. Got a question for you. Is it possible to calibrate a MacBook Pro display to a gamma of 2.4 using the Pure Power function in the reference display settings? Is it even recommended? I’m assuming simply entering 2.4 instead of 2.2 isn’t the correct way?

Yes just type in 2.4 :) Or use BT1886, really similar to Gamma 2.4

@@ArtIsRight Thanks for the reply. When I enter a custom pure power gamma, any number from 1.8 to 2.6, or change it to sRGB or BT.1886, they all look identical when the apply gamma boost is unchecked. Could you dive deeper into this and unravel what might be happening here?

With thunderbolt 5 and displayport 2.1 products coming in 2024 I'm looking forward to see 27" 5K 120hz displays and 6K 120hz. No products has been announced yet, but the standard is finalized in 2023, so it's just a matter of time for products to support it. Apple M4 at end of 2024 for instance.

There used to be more models of 27" 5k monitors, years ago, but companies gave up on them. Only Apple pushes that spec now, and while Samsung stepped up and added their offering it is not that much less expensive than the ASD, and it has some very mixed reviews.

Not to mention Adobe RGB performance that's not 70% or so. The SW line is expensive, and pretty much like a heart attack after you've already bought an expensive Mac especially.

actually there were only 1 dell modeled that offered 27"5K company didn't give them up, but rather don't have access nor the correct partnership to access them. Yield is an issue as well, LG Dev this with Apple and they both have exclusivity for the co-development. Yield for production at the beginning was limited so only LG and Apple got to have them. Later on yield was better but then comes the exclusivity for the co-development. We are just seeing that ending right now, which is why more companies are jumping in, but it is a slow process, and this is again back to yield from fabrication. As far as 99% Adobe RGB non of the 27" 5K ever have this just in the 80% range based on 90%+ P3 gamut. And yes SW line is at a premium but then they are hardware calibrated displays unlike most other software calibration only ones.

New question and maybe you have a video answering this: Do I need to do a software calibration on my SW321C along with the hardware calibration? Or is just having the hardware calibration enough? If I have some ICC profiles on my computer, should those be deleted? Thank you for your patience!

No, just simply use Palette Master Ultimate. Hardware calibration will also have ICC that does goes on the computer as well. That is enough. You can delete the one you are not using.

Also a question. I know you're not an LG guy more or less, but if I'm trying to recreate the same color setup for the photo profile on a MacBook pro, which software is the best to use? I haven't dipped into X-Rite or any of them because I don't want to create one profile and then it looks bonkers everywhere else. Even my LG 32-in I don't want to calibrate it yet because once you start that calibration party you can't go back 😅 until the job is done and it is a pain in the butt.

I would look at Calibrite solutions and use P3 gamut.
