Very cool video. I'm really impressed by BenQ's attention to detail. That is some of the most well thought out boxing/packaging I have ever seen (although Apple is right up there as well). The SW272Q is at the top of my list for a new photography type monitor.

It's all confusing for an old man. I mostly want to print my self scanned B&W negatives from the 1960's 70's etc. Assuming I purchase the SW272U, (by the way, is there a rumor of a SW32U or Q"?), how necessary is a calibrator such as the Calibrite Display Plus HL for B&W photos? I Will do some color work also. How does one decide between the SW272 U or Q, other than cost? Sorry, on and on, I believe you speak of making 3 profiles for the monitor which you can switch easily with the puck, Can one be for editing in Photoshop and another just be for the internet or watching a video, which I assume would be brighter? Thanks, your videos are helping me get closer to my answers. David

To get the best result one should always custom calibrate the display. Most Calibrite / X-Rite devices are compatible with this software. How does one decide between the SW272 U or Q, other than cost? 2K vs 4K Sorry, on and on, I believe you speak of making 3 profiles for the monitor which you can switch easily with the puck A possible scenario yes, but not necessary. I don't do that for my own workflow, it is just an example / idea. Can one be for editing in Photoshop and another just be for the internet or watching a video, which I assume would be brighter? You can do that, but for me it is unnecessary, I still browse the web at 80 nits and it is fine. But each to their own when it comes to this and this is where having 2 calibration would be handy if brightness variation is what you are after. Hope this help, feel free to follow up with more questions.

Hi Art Is Right, I received this monitor yesterday, but even before that I saw more reviews on KZbin, including yours. As I can see in your video, you also see shadows under the black frame on the sides of the monitor when you look at it at an angle...especially when you drag there white window or window with text. All the ambassadors praise this monitor, but no one sees this for 1600 usd? it seems to me like a manufacturing defect or imperfection for the money. As a photographer, I use two monitors at work, but my cheaper 27" 4k viewsonic has this error less prominently than this 2x expensive benq. I can see it on VS too, but it's not as prominent as with Benq. And the second problem with the benq is that its power source whistles. I hear it especially at night, when my office is quiet. It is a high note that whistles in the wasps. When the monitor has no signal, it does not emit this sound. Immediately when the image jumps, it starts to whistle. He whistles quieter for a moment, louder for a moment. Abbot, my viewsonic for a third of the price does not do this. I don't know if this happens to everyone. Do you have similar experience?
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
I have been using this and does not hear the whisper from the power source, this could possibly a defect in your unit, I am not sure. I might reach out to support and see what they say. About the shadow that you talked about, that is not a manufacturing defect, but just rather how the display and the front coating screen is constructed. This is usually something that shows up on displays has a glass front or cover. It is something that I noticed on my Pro Display XDR as well. If you feel that this display does not meet your strict needs, I would recommend that you return it while you are still in the windows. This is not something that bothers me about the display in my daily use and everything in the tech world is a USS Kobayashi Maru - no win all scenario. You may think and praise other brands, however, at this similar price point, BenQ have the best hardware calibrate display and software. At the higher tier there's Eizo. But any other brands hardware calibration is not good, I have tested these in my studio.
@martinrolinec6168 Жыл бұрын
@@ArtIsRight thank you for your informations, I give the brand one more chance, then exchange it for eizo. I have one eizo cs2420, it is a great model but I wanted to try another manufacturer and a monitor with 4K..And it didn't turn out the best

Eizo sits at the top and if you want the best and can justify the extra expense for the extra 10% to get closer to the 100% mark then then Eizo is arguably the better match for you.

I’m debating to purchase the sw272q , as I’m concerned about scaling , as I believe the tools and text etc in photoshop will look smaller with a 4K monitor as opposed to using a monitor with 1440 . I wish that’s a comparison you could show us

Hi @artifright - Great video (s). Did you ever release the review of the 272Q? I am a landscape photographer (print+digital) and have recently been dabbling into video work as well - I work on a Macbook laptop and I feel that the 2K should be sufficient for my work. However am I missing something else by not going the 4K route (primarily to save the difference in $$)? I do a lot of dodging and burning in Photoshop to bring out colors/contrast in my raw images. You mentioned somewhere that the 272U would be more suitable for watching 4K videos - I edit 4K videos but scale it down to lower resolutions for posting online - I am a little confused about this statement. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!
@ArtIsRightАй бұрын
Not yet, and I am not sure when at this point. As far as not going 4k, this is a personal preference. No right or wrong answer. Any display can show 4K, but on lower resolution you just won't see 4K, regardless of if you are editing or viewing at 100%. But then that is not usually necessary unless you work in highend hollywood production.

We already had a brief discussion in one of your other videos, but I am still not clear on what to do: I would like to move from my current set up with mbp 14 m3max plus sw2700PT to a dual monitor set up. 90% of the time this set up will be used for office work and coding, but 10% I'll use it for Lightroom and Photoshop. I am not sure if I should a) get a 270c, b) get a 272q, c) get a lower cost but brighter 'normal' IPS panel like a PD2700Q or d) ditch the sw2700PT and get two new 270c or 272q.... Any help and insights highly appreciated!

Lots of option here, if you want the latest matted panel choose the 272 series. Otherwise, while you can get them SW270C is a solid choice. As far as SW2700PT, it is getting older. I would think that you'll have a better calibration experience with Palette Master Ultimate, so I would say get 2 of anything that is compatible with PMU

No issue for 99.9% of use. The only time that would be an issue would be when you zoom in 500-600% or more on a retouching job, but most don't need that. It is not a good justificatino to not buy this. A true 10 bit panel would cost double if not triple. If you are a highend retoucher sure, you can justify it. Otherwise. It does not make sense to pursue 10 bit just for 10 bit sake.

Personnally, I will not but a BenQ art monitor again. I used to have one, with screen uniformity issues (with dufference up to 5dE between the center and 1st fith border). Every single replacement unit that BenQ sent to me had similar or worse uniformity problem. My gaming monitor had far more better uniformity. Never again... Great specs, great performance in the center, but in my humbke experence panel quality lottery.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
Ok. I have tested these new pro models and they uniformity is good on these. Improvements has been made with every generation. When something has short comings, it does not have that forever. Also which model did you have. Earlier models of the SWs may not have as good uniformity. The model year matters and technology has improved. I appreciate your feedback, however, regardless of if the display is BenQ or not I would still like to have specificity, model numbers and etc. Also replacement of the same model coming from the same factory and being that they are panel from the same generation would still exhibit similar short coming. If it was a newer model / generation then this is another story. Also comparing this to gaming display, it is an assessment that can be made, however, are we talking about the same model year / release date. Or a first generation BenQ unknown model, but even lets say it is an SW with hardware calibration capability, are we comparing to a gaming display that was released in 2015, which is the year that the first gen SWs was released, or are we comparing it to a more rather recent gaming display of unknown brand and model number.

So with the mac scaling issue "performance hit" when using a 27" 4k screen would it be better to get the 2k version?
@@ArtIsRight one more question if I may, if you scale your resolution although the mac is still outputting at native - because you are effectively say scaling to 2560x1440 to see it properly then thats the screen real estate you get to use? So surely a 4k monitor is false economy with a mac - you should go for a 2k screen or a 5k screen to get full potential of it?
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
So Mac only output native at display native resolution. Your thought is correct that for Mac you are probably better off with 2K if you don't want scaling. Because 5K Mac scales by default as well, it is just that the PPI is greater than 200, which is more than 2x and why everything is sharper. But here's also the thing as well, 4K or even 5K you will not run that native, however, for me, I scale it to highest equivalent before native, it makes things easier to see, while I still gained to ability to get some of the retina like quality, even though it is not full 2x resolution. You're welcome. I'm unaware of BenQ un announced products. However, if you look at the industry right now 5K display are just starting to become more prolific outside of Apple and LG. At this point in time there's no 5K hardware calibrated display. I'm hoping this will change in the future. Either way your solution works.

@drwatsonismine no offense taken and thank you for the support :) " If I work on a photo on my macbook connected to this display, I must realize there will be a difference due to color gamut and then when printing, adjust accordingly?" For the most part, you may ok, this would depend on the printer used, media, lab, etc. Lots of variables here. And even Mac Display can be calibrated and probably should be. By default Apple P3 calibration is a touch more blue than reference. So if you print, you can still use an Apple Display, if you like more accuracy I would calibrate it and if you want to get a great print / display match, I would consider these 99% Adobe RGB displays. I'm wondering why I should I buy this, and not the significantly cheaper Asus Proart PA279CRV (also Adobe calibrated)? This is tempting, but the ASUS seems better value - and will enable me to have a twin monitor setup.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
One would think so until one has try Asus hardware calibration software. It is terrible and breaks so many color management mechanism. Calibration from the factory is not as good. There are more beyond specs.

@@ArtIsRight Thank you -- of course, I know you are biased, but I do get where you're coming from. I just wish I could find a side-by-side comparison somewhere - people tend to review and love what they see, but don't have anything to measure against.

@@ArtIsRight I decided to bite the bullet and go for the BenQ -- it's truly superb. I'm not sure whether the monitor hood will remain in place -- it's a bit distracting at certain angles and the middle section seems a bit saggy. But, I'm glad I listened to you, so thank you. :)

Hi there , does anyone try to play 1080i 50hz and 60hz on SW272U? I have interlaced problems and some flickering. I have tested on input hdmi 1 & 2 with decklink studio 4k and ps5 at 1080i, cables are ok, my benq pv270 plays perfectly !

Hi Art. I just got my SW272Q. Any idea why the OSD menu always shows a resolution of 3840x2160? If I change the resolution on my Mac using System Settings --> Displays to 2560 x 1440, or any resolution for that matter, the resolution does appear to change on the SW272Q, but the OSD menu always shows 3840 x 2160. Another piece of information: The Displays menu says that the 1920 x 1080 resolution is the default. I'll contact BenQ support if necessary, but given your extensive experience with BenQ monitors I thought I'd see if you have seen this sort of behavior before. Thanks.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
Not sure why that is, you can reach out to BenQ. But that is just ancillary information on the display OSD does not necessary impede the workflow or what you sending to the display, the resolution is set by the OS.

Okay Art, you finally convinced me to pull the trigger on the new SW272U Display. For the price, 1500USD.... I am BTW working in Shanghai and TW..... it is a great value for anyone that does critical color work if they can afford it. I mainly do video production in the Education space for corporations. My question. My challenge and question for you and BenQ is this. I also own a PD2700U. I want to some how get close enough to match these to monitors as close as possible. They are both IPS 8 bit + 2 bit FCR panels. The testing and software engines are different obviously. So, what can I do to get these to close as possible. What is the method of doing this? I am sure others might also be in the same situation. I do not want to get 2 SW272U yet. My hardware setup is = PC Asus 399 mb, 32 gb DDR4, AMD Radeon VII GPU, 3 m.2 drives of 2t storage and scratch drives, WIN 10 pro. I also have an AERO 15 OLED laptop - 17-11th Gen CPU, WIN 10 PRO, 32gb ram, 1t m.2 system drive, 2t m.2 scratch drive. Love Apple, but I run DaVinci Resolve 18, AE, and Adobe Premiere along side. Main color grading is with the PC. Editing with Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Laptop used for some color work occasionally... but most done with PC attached to BenQ monitors. SW272U will be used as a dual setup with PD2700U. There you have it. Let the BenQ community observe ArtisRight on..... Thanks for taking the question and challenge in advance. 😊

So that is a difficult one for so many reasons, the generation of the panel matters as well in this case. What you can do is set the PD to REC 709 since you are using resolve and then calibrate it via software calibration. On the SW272U no need to do anything before just calibrate it Palette Master Ultimate with video REC 709 setting and see how close they look. There are going to be variation, different LCD panel, backlight, diffusion panel, not to mentioned that the fine coated panel will make colors look different than the PD that you have as well, regardless of perfect match or not. But this is what I would do to start.

@@ArtIsRight OK,I will take your recommendations and keep my notes to share with the community. BenQ probably needs to consider this moving forward also. There are many new content creators that need good reliable color calibrated monitors. So, the market is there for the mixing and matching product lines. Asus, being the only other Taiwanese company poses somewhat of a challenge in this space. LG & Dell are more 2 marketing giants, so they will eat some of the market based on that alone. Then you got Viewsonic, with their VP2786-4K and VP2785-4K monitors. I will be letting you know how this method works with my workflow. Thanks and let's keep the conversation flowing.😊

I hear you but there's no consideration really, it at the end of the day just that matching display type. I can tell you right now Apple Pro Display XDR does not match to iPhone, iPad nor their 27" 5K Display. Not all LCD comes from the same FAB and not all of them with variety can match, it is just at the end of the day, practical technology and physic, there are still things are not possible to do, this would be one of them. And this at large is not a BenQ problem, it is industry wide. As far as challenges goes for hardware calibrated display there's only Eizo that can challenge BenQ and to that end BenQ target market was never meant to take on Eizo at the top end. As far as Asus goes, they make decent hardware but their calibration at the factory is so so and their software is mediocre at best on PC and an atrocity on Mac. As for ViewSonic, again decent hardware but software that at this point in time can't run on Mac, I can't say that I am sure how serious they are in this market. Apple Silicon has been out since late 2020 and they have not gotten their act together yet. LG and Dell are big leagues, with only LG that has their own Fab, Dell just buy panels from Fab so it is a different story really. When it comes to Dell, they have hardware calibrated display but limited in range, scope and when it comes to Mac users, they are dead in the water. Why buy a nice 6 - 7 figure sport car (hardware calibrate display) to drive in first gear at 10 mph all the time (not doing proper hardware calibration on it), it is just a waste of potential.

@@ArtIsRight I hear you Art and agrees with you. But here is a thought.... with P3 Display becoming more adopted due to the popularity of Apples Macs, Ipads, and even browsers, that day might be coming sooner than later. Consumption and delivery is the key. Most people are consuming online content solely and the demand for 4k and beyond content will only grow as speeds of connections increase. If you got the monitor to view the highest possible color gamut - whether it's heavily marketed HDR content on TV displays or gaming monitors, consumers are hungry for it to be consumed😄. But again, I hear you and agree with your assessment of the current state of suppliers. I worked with all of them while living in Taiwan for 2 decades on OEM projects. BenQ locally was always thought a stepchild of ACER until they carved out their own niche. Asus like MSI, Gigabyte, etc was always thought of more focused on peripherals such as GPU's, motherboards and of course Laptop computer....while adding to tablets (Asus). On another note. I do have a question regarding the SW272U or any of the PD series monitors. If editing video using DaVinci Resovle or Adobe Premiere, do we still need to purchase the BMD Decklink in order to get a clean feed on Windows 10? Or is this not necessary with BenQ professional SW or PD monitors? If so, what is the setup or workflow when using the BenQ monitors.

"If editing video using DaVinci Resovle or Adobe Premiere, do we still need to purchase the BMD Decklink in order to get a clean feed on Windows 10? Or is this not necessary with BenQ professional SW or PD monitors? If so, what is the setup or workflow when using the BenQ monitors." This need for this really diminishes when do you don't do board cast, I think that is what most over looked. decklink clean output is mostly used for board casing for anything else it does not matter much. One can use it if they like or they can forgo it, just calibrate and save the money. If one wants to use it, on software calibrated display such as PD just put it in REC709 mode and plug the decklink in. On SW, do a hardware calibration with either Palette Master Element or Palette Master Ultimate first without decklink and then once that is done add decklink back into the equation. To the first part of what you said, Yes P3 will become the standard one day and it has, in some sense, became, somewhat, a de facto standard already. But this is just gamut and it has nothing to do with panel matching. Gamut, LCD, LED Backlight type, calibration and matching are all totally different things that overlaps and relates but not necessary matching.

I wonder, why in this day and age of fully calibrated Macs and iPhones right out of the box, the new monitors aren't deltaE perfect from the start?
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
There're lots of assumption and many things wrong with this short statement. "... in this day and age of fully calibrated Macs and iPhones right out of the box" Not just Mac, Every displays has to be calibrated from the factory. Very few tend to notice that Apple never published the % color gamut coverage nor do they ever report ∆E out of the box from the factory. This is not as oversight but rather by designed. "the new monitors aren't deltaE perfect from the start?" his statement does not make sense. They are, both of these SWs are under 1.5, that is as good as they are, imperceptible to human vision. The reason why one should calibrate is to be precise and accurate. Sure Apple has the advantage of being vertically integrated, but every time you plug in an Apple Display to a Mac without calibration, you are accepting, yet not knowing what the delta e is. For the most part, if one is serious about color accuracy, it is like editing blindfolded. For general consumer this is fine, for pro it is not. Also not to mentioned the assumption that everyone uses Apple or iPhone, may be more in the US but not everywhere in the world, and not all of one customer uses Apple products either.

My main point was, in independent tests of Mac displays are around deltaE 1 straight out of the factory. My perception is no one needs to calibrate new Apple displays, even the Pros. Apple just puts way more effort to do this in the factory.

"My main point was, in independent tests of Mac displays are around deltaE 1 straight out of the factory. " Do you have a like / reference to this test? "My perception is no one needs to calibrate new Apple displays, even the Pros. Apple just puts way more effort to do this in the factory." Yes and no. This is exactly what Apple wants, for users not to do any of this because when issues do come up, it makes their support easier and more stream line. Also, like I said before they have the benefit of being vertical, while other company don't. I would not argue that they calibrated their products really well. But variations do occur for panel to panel and different display types and it is conscious decision, engineering wise, to accept that the variations are going to be with in tolerance range of the user.

Why does the text look like crap? It’s horrible and difficult to read. I did turn HDR off, so that is not it, and I picked the correct resolution.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
HDR has nothing to do with this. Resolution is relative. So texts are hard to read, if you have the U model, you have the higher resolution display and most people don't run that at native resolution, otherwise, they'll get what you get. The key here is to scale the resolution, so choose one from the scale or list that makes it easier to see.

Q- Why dont more OEMS make a 5k monitor? Are they just being cheap? Theres obviously a market for it. The monitor market is just bizzare, its not like apple is competing with its 2 hyper expensive options. Im guessing they feel like theres not enough of a market. But damn, there's a ton of graphic and video professionals, and now content creators. I dont get it. I also researched benq monitors, and theres nothing under 1k thats good for apples crazy dpi requirement, much less good rbg numbers. The lack of choices is ridiculous..i've been looking for a year now.
